Ronald Macafee that’s a very good point. However, just because it’s never happened to you, doesn’t mean it never will. If you’ve heard of stories of other encounters, then the probability of it eventually happening is possible, and you should therefore practice preventative measures based on those stories. But realistically, yeah, if it’s never happened in twenty years, you most likely won’t be as prepared. Similar to small town police not being as prepared or equipped to handle a mass murder as a major city like LA.

@@RF0rty sharks usually have a taste test when it comes to feeling things. They don’t have fingers or hands to feel and touch things. These sharks can have a taste test and can involuntarily bite limb off in the process, usually they don’t attack but I think it is reasonable to think she was on her period or something because shark attacks like this are VERY rare. I wouldn’t blame it on the sharks but more so that they had no medical staff, things like jellyfish sting’s venom can be far more fatal than a shark bite and it’s always god to have safely on your side.

@@thedevilsadvocate5210 Incorrect. Without them getting in the shark's home there would be no story. They chose to go into the ocean. Sharks live in the ocean. It is up to the individual to know what lives in the environment they're exploring. It's like going on a safari and blaming a lion for attacking you. No one told you to go in it's home. I've been going to the Bahamas for decades and the Bahamas are full of sharks! I was docked at Bayside Marina and the biggest bull shark hung out there waiting for the fisherman to clean their catch. It had to be close to a world record. One day at around 1 pm I swam off the back of my boat to the 14 foot bottom and then floated up to the swim platform only to look down and see that bull shark where I had just been. I didn't think he would be around because the fishing boats were all out fishing. One of the stupidest things I have ever done! So sorry for this family's loss!

My wife & I have been certified divers since the mid-1980s. Florida has more shark fatalities than any other state, and yet more people in the state are killed every year by falling coconuts. Ten or 15 years ago Florida outlawed feeding sharks on "swim with the sharks" boat tours. The reason was because you chum the water first to attract them & boaters had noticed that sharks seemed to be getting attracted to just the sound of boat engines even though there was no chum in the water. This practice is still legal in the Bahamas though. I think boat crews should be trained in basic life saving skills like CPR & tourniquets, but shark attacks so seldom happen that it's totally unrealistic to expect to have shark spotters on a small dive boat. WAY, and I mean WAY more people die from drowning/respiratory issues on snorkeling trips than from shark bites.

Matt from Florida very well said, I lived in the keys most my life, and the biggest detriment to sharks as a species is the negative reputation they hold. Her mom did her best. I think most parents would do the same thing she did. If I recall correctly, when that child got killed by the gator in the Disney resort in Florida, the parents fought for their child in spite of the danger to themselves. There was also that women who got out of her car during one of those drive-thru safari type parks, and a tiger ran up and dragged her off, but her husband and her mother who were both in the car, got out and ran over to save her. Her mother was killed by another tiger that was there, but the rangers saved the girl and her husband in time. Lot of times I just think it just think this stuff is basic paternal instinct that kicks in for parents, and they don't even care about the danger anymore once that kicks in.

However when we were in the Bahamas in 2001, We were met by an official tour guide of Nassau. He wore a badge of the city & took us around the city. We asked about going in the water & about sharks. He told us that the cruise ships ( we came on one) and ALL & EVERY tour ATTRACTIONS DENY that sharks are in the waters. He said and I quote "We got sharks- they bite you". We went to Coco Key Island walked in very ankle deep water we could see only. We also looked at booklets for tours for boating; diving; snorlking; listened to people talking about tours...no one mentioned sharks. And I am betting no one will. Also back in the USA..SOUTH CAROLINA MYRTLE BEACH has a huge shark population.
