Cx 5 hands down. I’ve had Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, Mercedes, Volvo, Chevrolet, and, for the price Mazda beats them all…. Just got a 2023 CX 5 and loving it. I have a friend that has the 23 CRV hybrid and to be honest, not even close, even though I’ve been a Honda fan for years.

CX-5 for me! Just traded in my 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring for a 2023 CX-5 Carbon Edition. Love my Mazda. AWD is standard now. Depending on trim the Grand Touring does have paddle shifters. There is more head room in the back seat of the Mazda, other comparison reviews show the difference. The Sky-active AWD and Gvectoring plus make for a fun drive and great road handling. If you want a panoramic moonroof and larger cargo, then the Mazda CX-50 would be your pick. The Signature turbo model your driving should have heated and cooling seats, folding heated rear view mirrors. CX-5 base model starts at $26,000-$41,000 and has 8 trim models giving you lots of package choices.

I would go with the Mazda CX-5 for multiple reasons. The quality is on par with Toyota's and it's a lot easier to find one on a dealer's lot compared to the RAV4. Plus, I would go with non-turbo version to get better fuel economy and save the wear and tear on the engine that is caused by a turbocharger. The CX-5 has a better interior and I think the difference in cargo space is nominal and I don't need tons of cargo space. Better technology is not that important to me (I'm 59) and the lesser amount of technology, the fewer things that can break. Keep it simple stupid principle applies here. I don't drive many miles and seldom drive on the highway, so having a more comfortable driving experience is important. Simply, the Mazda wins here.

Same... and it's not just the markup over MSRP, but it's also all the BS dealer add ons like $1500 protection dealer installed "protection packages" and other BS charges that the Mazda dealers don't seem to be doing. The current OTD price difference between the two is huge, making the CX5 a much better value.

'23 CX-5 PP for my wife. Non turbo but it's sufficient. MSRP no adds, dealer threw in a cargo mat and the nav SD card. Got what I wanted for my trade. Good initial quality, no issues so far, great quality interior, made in Japan. 0.9 percent financing made the deal, kept our money in the bank, half way paid off already. The problem with Toyota is low inventory right now. Plus they just ignore you if you try to make your deal. I shopped at a local Toyota dealership several years ago and they had the attitude that if you're not a fanboy and salivating at the mouth and anything you say, then just go away. I said the heck with that. Plus I don't like CVTs. or hybrids.

My wife and I just bought the 2023 Premium edition and couldn’t be more happier with the purchase. I also got what I wanted for my trade in which was a 2016 Ram Sport which was starting to show its age and we wanted to get rid of it before the known Ram quality issues would show up at the higher mileage approaching. After everything was done we only owed a couple of thousand dollars and paid it in cash making this my first ever car to own outright from day 1. We test drove many similar SUVs but honestly the Mazda driving experience blew the others away. Also the Bose 10 speaker system is freaking amazing!! There are some minor annoyances I have with mine having to do with the infotainment system but I can adjust and learn and every car I have ever owned has had something I didn’t like so no big deal.

Something important to consider is the Rav4 has dual injection, and the Mazda don't. With dual injection (direct and fuel injection) the Rav4 won't have any issues with carbon build up like the Mazda will over time. This is a big deal as direct injection will degrade performance end efficiency over time. The only solution for direct injection is to have the valves walnut blasted periodically.

Appreciate the comparison, but it is irrelevant for me and many others. Why? Toyota has no Rav4s on the car lot near me (a total of 4). Mazda has more CX-5s (too many to count). So if I want to pay a lot more over invoice (as much as $6000 over) I can buy the Toyota. Or I can get for slightly below invoice a CX-5 (about $1000 below MSRP). So that $1000 difference is now a $8000 difference. That buys a lot of gas. Probably why Toyota sales are not really up from last year but Mazda is selling more cars. So based on availability the only choice where I live is the Mazda. Still appreciate your thoughts!

Where I am and when I bought my CX-5 (April 2023) the price difference between similarly specced models was over 6000 USD (adjusted from the country's currency). Plus, in my country Mazda offers a mild-hybrid version which improves the overall mileage, although not by much. And as you said - space is not everything. The overall feeling I got in the two cars was quite different. The RAV4 felt spacious but basic. The CX-5 felt like I was in a German premium brand car. Which, cost even more than the RAV4. More bang for the buck, except for storage capacity. The CX-5 also has touchscreen where I am. Not sure why this differs so much in other markets.

I have a 2016 CX5 (gen1) and just picked up my 2023 CX5 (gen2) in May. It was a toss up between Mazda, Toyota and Hyundai… the Mazda just feel way more premium then the other 2 and Toyota financing wanted 8%, Hyundai was giving me 6.5% and Mazda was 5.9% -1% for loyalty so it was only 4.9%. The Toyota has more cargo room but the non-Hybrid just feels fine to drive, suspension is very soft which I guess some people like. I just wish my cx5 had wireless CarPlay but that was only available on the higher tier model… in Canada the CX5 they were driving would have had wireless CarPlay.. the USA seems to have more options between the models… Canada is a bit less complicated. Also the CX5 had a 40/20/40 split rear seat which is a huge bonus for me because I have 2 baby seats in the back… the rav4 is 60/40. My brother has the 2023 Rav4 and his base model (with financing) cost more then my GS CX5 which has a lot of extra “nice to haves” So again, I put my money where my mouth is and got the CX5…
@Theescapist_87

Do you find the CX5 to be okay with car seats? I keep reading that it can't fit rear facing seats and my husband and I are trying for our first so we want to make sure it will work before taking the plunge. In fact that's the only thing that made me look at the RAV4. The extra room in the back seat and cargo areas.
@M9_Prime
@M9_Prime Жыл бұрын
@@Theescapist_87 when it came to the baby seat we had no issue, when it came to rear facing we used the Diono Rainer which is a very tall car seat (my kids are tall for their age for some reason). The front seat was a little on the cramped side for the passenger. We also have a 2016 CX5 and that one was even more cramped then the 2023 one. With 1 child it wasn’t an issues though. When we would drive somewhere my wife always just sat in the back with the baby. When we had our second it was slightly less convenient. We could have gotten a shorter rear facing seat but we needed the extra height. Though my perspective might be a little skewed because every car I have put that car seat (rear facing) onto didn’t have enough room in my opinion. My wife and I are both around 5’8 and we managed but it was on the cramped side. Once they go forward facing then all these problems go away. My kids are both forward facing and it’s nice. The one big advantage for the cx5 over the rav4 is the 40/20/40 split seats. When you have 2 car seats and need to carry something longer, it’s nice to be able to fold the centre seat. The rav4 is 60/40 split seats (mazda cx-50 is same as rav4). Personally I have used that folding seat quite a bit. Hope it helped. Also if in doubt, bring the seat to a dealership and test fit it it their test car…

@@M9_Prime Thanks! That definitely helped a lot. My husband is 6'1, but I'm only 5'5 and use alot less space than him. We were also looking at a Buick Envision, but I didn't like the price in comparison. Anything will be better than our old Trax though.

@@Theescapist_87 I personally wouldn’t buy a GM… from the stuff I drove, mazda felt the best and the interior is the most premium feeling. In my case I drive alone 90% of the time, other 5% I’m dropping kids off solo and maybe 5% with my partner in the car. We make it work. If you have only 1 child you can sit in the back and get chauffeured like my partner did.

Have a CX5 Select Preferred, non turbo, and it has all the options I need or want. 6 months and the vehicle is really nice. Road trip of 400 miles averaged 33 to 35 mpg at conservative cruise control speeds with the AC on at 70-75. On the trip meter since we bought the mpg average is 27mpg.

Just curious of your opinion. I am 6'7" and I'm in the market for a simple suv for daily driving. My main concern is comfort and fitment. What would be a good fit for someone like myself. I'm torn between the rav4 , the Mazda cx5 , volvo x60/90 , and subaru outback.
@CarConfections
@CarConfections Жыл бұрын
The Outback or XC90 would probably be the best fit for someone of your size

As much as I like Mazdas, I think it's worth to mention that there's a reason why the Rav4 is the best seller. The resell value is there and I think it's overall a better brand.
@claudiustanciu05
@claudiustanciu05 Жыл бұрын
I agree that the resell value is better ob the RAV4 from a price point. But if you view it percentage-wise, it is actually the same. They have different price points and depreciation (calculated in percentage over 4 years - the average time of ownership) is quite equal. But then again, in speaking for Europe here.

Great review and as these 2 are so close overall, for most people it would probably come down to styling. For me I would opt for the Rav4. Yes the Mazda may have slightly better driving dynamics and performance but overall it’s still not what many would consider fast. Nice review

This review is an incongruent comparison between ICE v hybrid engines. We’re speaking of alternate universes-electrification v combustion. The congruent comparison would’ve been the ICE RAV4 v ICE CX5-both combustion engines with no electrification. The way I see it, independent of engines and power trains is that the RAV4 is more of a truck and drives more like it. The CX5 drives more like a car, hence less cargo and wider tires.
@CarConfections
@CarConfections Жыл бұрын
The hybrid is the most powerful RAV4 available, which makes sense to go against the most powerful CX-5. Hybrids are not an "alternative universe" but simply an extension on a gas engine that increases power and efficiency

Never one has the V6 engine! Especially the RAV4 with that Hybrid which I can’t stand since the change over from the 3rd into the 4th Generation modal of the RAV4. All of that technology but yet no V6! But since 2013 year I have been mad at Toyota for getting rid of the V6 in the RAV4 so the Mazda CX-5 would be my favorite choice since I have driven both before. Don’t know what Toyota has done but it’s not the same RAV4 that I miss. All of that hybrid mess is just killing the RAV4. In my opinion it’s a Sup-up Prius SUV now and not a RAV4 (Recreation Active Vehicle with 4wheel drive)

God prices are different in the US. I’ll leave my 2 cents here: I live in Eastern Europe (Romania). Currebtly today prices are as follows: - 2.5 e-Skyactive(it’s mild-hybrid here) AWD, AT6 CX-5 with every option ticked, including stationary heating (Webasto) - is 45.790 EUROs; - 2.5 Hybrid AWD eCVT Rav4 Luxury (top end one) with paint (only optipn really) is 53.980 EUROs. Base hybrid AWD RAV4 is 41.290 EUROs. There is quite the gap, and given the fact that you sacrifice some acceleration and fuel consumption on the CX-5, imo it is a No Brainer.
