A family says they were the targets of racial profiling by a West County police department while in the parking lot of the Academy Sports on Manchester Road Monday.

The mother was articulate and the family was polite in expressing their fear and outrage at being profiled. The son showed that he hadn't stolen anything and they had receipts...YET even though the store hadn't notified the officer of any suspicion towards this family, the officer still harassed and humiliated this lovely family. The cops pull up next to each other in opposite directions, talking, at the far end of the parking lot. They pull up at all hours of the day, and just stay in their vehicles, talking or doing paperwork. 1:07 - TIP: STOP saying to police, "We have our rights." THAT MEANS ABSOLUTELY ZERO, and the cop knows it. People, you need to know what their rights are and how to assert those rights when confronted by cops like that. Telling police that you have your rights, or you know what your rights are usually means you haven't got a clue what your rights are. I have no doubt that the cop was a racist and that he was racially profiling. Apparently, the police are being told to keep black people from out of that area. He wants to make black people feel as uncomfortable as possible so they won't return. That is the goal. TIP: Listen to what the cop says, and regardless of what is said or asked, your response should be, "Excuse me officer, are we being detained or are we free to go." Under the law, the police have to either let you go, or he has to tell you why he's detaining you. If he's detaining you and asks for I.D. you need to show him your I.D. If the police ask you questions that have nothing to do with why he said he detained you, you should exercise your right to remain silent.
