That child wasn’t in the wrong place, wrong time. He was exactly where he was supposed to be, doing exactly what his father asked him to do. He was entirely blameless. Using that phrase of “wrong place wrong time” makes it sound like he did something wrong. He did not. At all.

When I was 9 years old in 1987, two white, female cops stopped me and my brother after we left a 7-11. My brother was 13. We bought chips and two cans of soda. The officers asked were our items stolen, handcuffed us and made us sit on the curb while they “figured out” what was going on. They took our names and asked our address and said we looked like we were “up to no good”, because of course we did….We were two Black boys, who to them probably looked like hardened gangbangers in their early 20’s. Because that’s how they see us. We can’t even be children. That was my first interaction with the police. They were mean and nasty for no reason. I couldn’t understand why they were so angry towards us. A far cry from the “friendly police officer” they have come to your school to talk about the dangers of drugs and whatnot. I’m 45 and I still remember those wicked bigoted cops, who harassed me and brother as kids walking home.

This is what is called "Living While Black," if you are black and living in America, you get arrested and traumatised for a crime you never committed. Black people who live in a predominantly white society like in America, are always in trouble everyday because of the colour of their skin. Of all the races in the world, blacks have suffered the worst cruel treatment from racist white people and racist white police officers since the Slave Trade of long ago and blacks are still suffering harassment from white people and white police officers to this day.

It’s called “Group Think” psychological phenomenon in which the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility. "there's always a danger of groupthink when two leaders are so alike" so when you have one racist with another friend, most likely they have the same ideology. Police departments hire those with group think. Because they think being alike foster team-work, cohesiveness and builds relationships. When I turn it fosters ignorance, falsehoods, and behaviors which are most likely incompatible, inconsistent and incompetent to do any job especially one in which you must deal with people of all walks of life. Hence The application process for police jobs should have to take a personality and psychological test, but departments don’t want this. As the dumber you are, the most you are controlled. I hope they sue them! This stuff needs to stop! If you’re not for sure don’t be handcuffing people and scaring them! They need to be held accountable. If you don’t know how to do your job and get out of the police force!

Huge props to this young man not making it worse by running, this should have never happened. Glad the father called them out.

@Lovelyone1 what is so scary about letting the Police their job? Did someone teach him at 12 years old that the Police are out to kill him or something? They rescue people and take out the garbage too.

I commend Tayshawn cool thinking and being exactly what he is. A kid! Because this could have been gone really bad and really put Lansing on the map. Blessings to his parents for raising a respectable soul. Hold on family...🙌🏽❤️🙏🏽

It's a simple mistake and he fit the description of someone they were looking for. He was treated professionally, they got an apology. That should be the end of the story. BUT NOPE, family is looking to get paid. Just disgraceful. Now had they hurt the kids, treated him poorly, that's a whole other story and I would support them going after the Police to get paid.

I’m white and had this exact same thing happen to me. Was with a friend and we were walking to a convenience store down the street. Cops detained us saying that we matched the description of 2 white kids wearing black shorts and just broke into a house nearby. We were cooperative and they let us go. Just like this kid.
