The fictional Alex P. Keaton was an attempt by the show's liberal producers to ridicule conservatives. He was chauvinistic, pompous, and worshiped money. (But ironically was atheist) While his parents were 60's hippy liberals. The producer's plan backfired in the long run, as Alex P. Keaton went on to become one of TV Guide's 50 Greatest television characters of all time. While the careers of Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross went nowhere.

i loved family ties. great 80s sitcom. they were the typical family. all the actors had such great chemistry with each other. micheal j fox, michael gross, justine bateman, meredith baxter, and tina yothers really worked well together.

What really stood out to me was that he violently decked Alex's obnoxious teacher Mr. Tedesco for talking smutty about his wife Elyse - then later hypocritically condemns son Andy for using violence in day care. And when Andy used violence, he did it to defend the honor of a disabled person. Therefore, Andy had more justification to use violence in his situation than daddy Steven had in his. I always hated that classical liberal "wisdom" of "violence is never justified, not even to stand up for yourself" bullcrap from 80's family sitcoms.

My experience has been that the shortest guys are usually the most athletic, in a gymnastic sense --- I guess less body weight and lower center of gravity means you can do flips and jumps a lot easier than a big dude can

I loved this show as a kid and loved Alex P Keaton more. He made me read the business section and stock price pages without understading them.
