When you add a new tank after the line has been purged you don't have to click over and over you only have to hold the pilot light down until gas can get down there you can maybe get a whiffs of it. Then one click Just saying I love the video and help me a lot
@stephenhall5694
@stephenhall5694 Ай бұрын
Agreed. Dude, as a professed “outdoor pro,” you should know. Just hold the button for maybe 5-10 seconds until propane gas reaches the pilot. If you listen very closely, you can even hear a change in tone, when it changes from air coming out to propane coming out.

A few tips. The pilot sensor you call is a thermo coupler. I see these videos people using rubbing alcohol or peroxide. These are not your solvents of choice. They leave a residue behind. I would use carb cleaner, brake cleaner or preferably acetone which leaves zero residue and very effective cutting dirt without hurting the metal parts. A Q-tip is not the best choice. The first time I tried that the cotton come off the head and I was forced to disassemble it which was a good thing because I learned what was in that hole. That orifice is about 2" deep and at the bottom of it is a little fitting with a check ball valve at the bottom. That is where the problem lies where dirt and dust obstructs. What I would do is generously spray carb cleaner with the red tube on the can. It will clean the top of the check ball and the walls. Then spray compressed air. In the can works great as you have a red tube on that can too. If you stick anything in the hole use a pipe cleaner but it's really not necessary as the carb cleaner does a good job all by itself. Done properly you'll have a 1.5" pilot flame extending way past the thermo coupler. Store your heater off season in a plastic bag so not to collect dust. Propane also has leeching oils in it that collect on that check valve. A Mr Heater filter is worth every penny.
@Rein_Ciarfella
@Rein_Ciarfella 11 ай бұрын
If there's a check ball then it must work in the direction TOWARDS the orifice opening, which tells me that spraying shop air into the orifice is really only cleaning out the orifice, but not the entire line, or am I missing something? Maybe figure out a way to depress the Pilot knob while blowing from the other end? At any rate, thanks a lot for suggesting what I was already thinking (because I work on small engines) - using carb or brake cleaner instead of bothering with Q-tips and alcohol (although I use them as well as acetone in my shop for one thing or another). Come to think of it, maybe figure out a way to spray carb/brake cleaner into the heater from the tank fitting, thereby flushing out the line, check valve and orifice in one shot? I'm going to try that tomorrow, just to see if I can adapt a straw to that end of the system. Maybe heat up the straw to expand it enough to fit on tightly, or use one of my 2-stroke fuel lines to adapt... Storing the heater inside a sealed plastic bag makes a lot of sense, not only for dust but also for spiders (and the resultant webs and egg sacks), which a lot of people mention. I suspect the oils involved in propane come from the compressors used to pump propane at the filling stations, although some people think it leeches from the hose used to connect the tanks to the heaters. The "red tube" you're referring to is usually called a "straw".

@Harry Wang I have both a portable Buddy and a Big Buddy for my small woodshop, I'm using them now and they both work great. Once I cleaned a spider web out of the Big Buddy's pilot tube with alcohol and a q-tip, that's it. I recommend storing the heaters sealed in a plastic bag during the warm months, cheers!
@trumpingtonfanhurst694
@trumpingtonfanhurst694 4 жыл бұрын
@Harry Wang I don't use a filter for the Big Buddy, it has the Mr. Heater regulated hose; I would on yours just to be sure because it's high pressure. Carbon buildup, I guess you mean on the thermocouple (thing the pilot flame hits), you can clean that with some triple 0 steel wool.

You don’t have to push the button seven or eight times. Just push the button once hold it down until you either here or smell the gas coming out, instead of air coming out. Then release it, push it one more time and it should snap and ignite on the first try.

IF you use a cheap hose to connect to to a larger LP tank there are oils inside the cheap hoses that clogg them up. Also when using it with a larger tank you should always turn the tank off when not in use, I've found it causes more build up in the gas regulators. It's best to use a filter on the gas line, little buddy makes and sell them to fix just what I am blabbing about.

Good video! As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & have a 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. Update: This season (2024) I got a 6' hose with regulator. Tried to light, but no ignition. Watched some videos, couldn't get front grill off, so I used a wooden cotton tip, wet it a little with some Everclear (don't drink this stuff!), and went through grill and pushed it all the way down the orifice. It lit on first click! 😉

I will try this tomorrow. Nothing else worked. Also, my experience has taught me to always use the steel filter, especially if it's coming from a 20lb tank. I learned that the hard way. The canisters never caused that problem. These things are impossible to dismantle, so it's usually time for the landfill. When they break, they REALLY break. It's a love-hate relationship.

Our pilot light just comes on while pushing the button but goes out the minute we let the button go. If on a rare occasion it does stay lit when you go to move the button to on if there is any slight click at all the pilot goes out. Or if you get it on it goes our at the slightest movement or even without movement after a few minutes. Bough this thing last January used it one camping trip only at night, next trip and ever since we cannot get it to work. I have done the alcohol cleaning thing. It sounds like the thermocoupler rod (that the pilot flame is touching) may not be working. When its hot (and working correctly) it will ALLOW the gas to come on and the heater to function. Not sure if its replaceable in the Mr Buddy? .... but in many appliance, that do have a thermocoupler & pilot light ---- it is replaceable and very easy to do. Follow the thermocoupler line back into the heater - find where it attaches and remove it (if you can get a replacement). The thermocoupler you will replace is a tiny copper flexible tube that has the rod on the end.... that sits right by the pilot flame in front, and the other end (probably) attaches by a threaded fitting, inside, near the pilot control knob.
@guitarman_3693
@guitarman_3693 2 жыл бұрын
its possible that the pilot flame isnt close enough to heat the bulb end on the thermocoupling, its possible that a hard jar or bang on the housing might have dislodged the thermo coupling from its correct position. maybe check that. i have in the past used a long burning match to heat the thermo coupling while turning the knob to the on position & if it stay lit after you have the knob set, and then remove the match.... it is a faulty thermo coupling or, like i said the pilot flame isnt close enough to the thermo coupling bulb/sensor end. good luck.. also make sure the pilot light housing is clean, very clean..

I had a lil buddy with 2 grids and 2 propane can attachments that I used once about 10 years ago. I couldn’t get it to fire at all. I tried this and it worked. I did want to say that I was able to push the q-tip deep in to the nozzle. The first couple of times I tried it still didn’t light until I forced the q-tip in quite deep. I had to trim some of the cotton off to make it fit that far down. Also, just a word of caution, make sure you blow everything dry. The alcohol is flammable. Don’t spark the igniter with excess alcohol around the nozzle.

I couldn't start mine - problem was the bottle wasn't screwing on far enough (even when I turned it tight). The solution was simple.. remove the black rubber washer where the bottle connects to the Mr Buddy. The new set of 4 1lb tanks that I bought from Amazon - had threads that didnt go deep enough. The blue pilot is now TWICE as big as before. There does appear to be more rubber than just the black washer.. so the fit is still tight. Use at YOUR discretion.

To start heater you need to hold button down in the pilot position for 30 seconds or more until gas gets going and then release and push down again for spark. This will improve the life of the pilot starter. Also, there is a small holes in the base of the pilot tube that needs to be checked for dust, cob web, grease or wax. This may be seen with a flash lite thru the slotted red grate in front of the pilot. Clean with pipe cleaner and or compressed air. Most people don't know about this side hole. It precisely measures air to pilot to get a blue flame. Also, this hole is a safety factor in that it can play a role in low oxygen conditions to shut unit down. Just cleaning the pilot tube alone with a Q tip may not be enough. Also, if the unit has been used for several years or more out in the dust, you probably have lots of dust and more importantly, cob webs inside the unit which can mess with air flow to main burner. Time to take apart and clean. While your doing that, it may be a good idea to remove the regulator to control valve line and flush with brake cleaner, especially if you use bulk propane tanks without the filter. These tanks sometimes get a dose of oil when you have them refilled.

Thank you for pointing out the other hole that regulates the air. Yours is the only comment I've seen that mentions it. I cleaned that and my heater worked wonderfully for about a month. Now it's down again. I've always used a filter on my unit.

When using the hoses Mr. Heater suggest using the hose filter as the hose will release oils over time. The hose probably also breaks down and allows little pieces of rubber to clog up the lines in the heater.

A tip for starting is to press down on the pilot light button and hold it down for 5 or ten seconds. Then let it up and push it down. The gas needs time to bleed.

Great video! And well done! While we're here, is anyone have any experience using the filter that can be purchased to go along with this unit? I purchased a filter and it works great except now it no longer allows the unit to light. I'm wondering if the filter has reached its useful in it. Does anyone know can that filter be cleaned manually? Or is it just something disposable we have to toss?

I never have had to push the knob as far as firing the spark. Just hold it short of firing the spark for a few seconds, then fire the spark. Doing it over and over multiplies the number of times it's fired, times the number of startups, wearing it out prematurely. Such things usually have the number of cycles expected, in the design specifications. I'm sure that since it involves propane, it's required to last "x" times, before failure shows up.

Thanks a lot have fun out there

HOLDING down the pilot switch while back blowing the pilot tube was something that I never thought of doing. You must hold down the pilot light for 15-30 seconds to prime the gas pilot flame.

Hi. I needs some help. I have one of these I used maybe 5 times. I bought it 2 years ago. Last year when I attempted to use wouldn’t light. Gave up. Did this procedure and it gives me hope! Last year I could get a pilot flame but it was very weak. When I released the button it would go out. I cleaned with alcohol and compressed air and now the pilot flame is big but when I release the button it still goes out. Any ideas?
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
If it goes out immediately after letting off of the button, it could be something clogged in the valve for the knob or it could be a bad thermocouple. The valve can be cleaned in a similar fashion by using alcohol and compressed air to back feed it through the system while moving the knob through its positions.

I got a good pilot light but as soon as I turn it to low it immediately almost shuts the gas off and the pilot light goes to that little blue flame where it's not touching the sensor
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding 3 жыл бұрын
It could very well be the same type of clog in the gas control valve/knob. You may be able to to get some cleaner/solvent/alcohol to go in through the nozzle that screws onto the tank and then use a can of air of an air compressor to force it through with the knob in the Low gas setting where it usually occurs. If you could get enough in, I’d recommend turning the knob back and forth while forcing it through. Hopefully that makes sense.

If anyone is interested they do make a filter for when you hook up a 20lb lp tank to help prevent the oils from getting into the heater unit. You could use it for the 5lb tanks too. It costs around $10

Always use a filter even with the little tanks, I know it will stick out some, but if you use a filter you will rarely have a problem with things getting clogged especially when you are using an extension hose and large tank.

The filter did not prevent the oil from getting into the tube. I had to do a complete teardown, and I replaced the regulator since that is a critical part for safety.

I have 3, two little ones and a big one. All of them work perfectly with the little green tank but won’t work with a grill tank. I’ve tried three different hoses also. I’ve also tried different grill tanks. What could be my problem?
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. We’ve been able to use the 1lbs green tanks and the 20lbs grill tanks with very little issue. Are you using the hose from Mr. Heater or just a generic one? I know I’ve read where people have had issues with some hoses coming a part internally. Might be worth checking out.

Family Adventures Overlanding I have one generic one and two Mr Heater hoses.
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding
@FamilyAdventuresOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
Well, you’ve kinda got me on that one. We know that they work with the 1lbs tanks directly screwed in, so the heaters themselves sound like they’re working properly. The only variables seem to be the 20lbs tanks and the hoses. What length hoses are you running? It really shouldn’t make a difference but I’m wondering if they’re longer hoses and that is having some type of effect on the pressure/flow of the fuel. Do you have a propane stove or lantern that you could hook up to the hose with the 20lbs tank and see if you can run those as well? Preferably something that runs on high pressure and doesn’t require a regulator.

Mine normally start first to second try...if they don't you already have issues . Most likely oil in lines from propane ..especially if you use a 20lb tank vs the 1 lb tanks.
