I don't know the exact details but descriptions of foods in the UK are not the same as they are in the US. So those foods labelled in the US as organic may not be considered organic here. Certainly I know that the description " free range" in the US when applied to chickens just means they were in a barn with no outside access and virtually no natural light but not in a cage. Here they have to be allowed outside with light and fresh air and inside the barn there must be natural light during the day and perches etc. Huge difference.
@virginiarobbins7539

FREE RANGE means they are literally free outside to eat bugs and be natural.. You're talking of cage free.. those are inside but just not in cages

@@PieXP So what? The food is the same so why should Americans have to pay more for the same items? It is not like there is a shortage of food and they throw away a ridiculous amount of food that could have been eaten. Many, many Americans struggle to pay for groceries because they are so expensive. All the while the Grocery stores are making BILLIONS in profit. It has nothing to do with how much American's make and everything to do with greed.

@@jaklg7905 The US has the highest disposable income in the world, when you have a higher disposable income, there's a higher demand for products which raises prices. It's the exact same for any other country with a high disposable income.

Our introduction to Aldi was 9 years ago, in Tulsa Oklahoma. We're in rural Australia and in the past 9 years, Aldi finally came to our town. Excluding prices, too hard to do currency conversion at the time, I found them basically identical. American Aldi stocked many US products and in comparison Aldi Australia stocks just as many Australian products.

I was shocked at how cheap the food costs were in the UK. The quality was also 10x better than America. Without all the chemicals amd additives. I had a liquid coffee creamer addiction, and when I got back from the UK, I could taste the chemicles in the creamer. I haven't touched it since and use milk. I wish we could get that quality and asaurance of what we're really eating in the USA.

ALDI is the common company brand name of two German multinational family-owned discount supermarket chains operating over 12,000 stores in 18 countries. It would be most interesting to see a UK vs a German ALDI shopping comparison. Also, it would be important to consider the current exchange rates between the UK Pound vs the USD, and the UK Pound vs the German Deutsche Marks. Note: I purchased the US ALDI frozen Mixed Berries featured in their weekly ad two weeks ago for 50% off! Of course, I took advantage of the special. It is important to always check the weekly ad because, at some point, most everything goes on special discounts.

PS You must also consider the unfortunate fact that currently, the USA is severely suffering under the O'Biden inflation NIGHTMARE😥 It hasn't been this bad in over FIFTY+ years since the Carter administration!! Just four years ago, the US economy was thriving/flourishing. Gasoline, food, household supplies, rent, travel (airline & train tickets, car rentals, hotel expenses), entertainment (amusement parks, the cinema, concerts, sporting events, etc.), construction supplies, new and used vehicles, insurance, etc., were anywhere from half to 3/4 less in price. Many senior citizens today who are barely surviving, on a limited income from Social Security (something they've invested in their entire working lives) are now forced to decide between purchasing food (reduced to one meal per day) or their medication. Your comparison shopping in the USA would have been vastly different four years ago than what it is today. Hopefully, all of this will change for the better soon. 🙏

We'd love to go to Germany one day 🇩🇪😊 Before this trip we hadn't been to the USA for about 5 years, and we remember that it was significantly cheaper back then - even cheaper than than the UK was, so it was quite a surprise to see the substantial differences in prices. Also, many of our USA viewers have been saying about changes to the economy and prices since the presidential change, which is really sad to hear. We hope things change for the better in the USA and the economy thrives again like it once used to 🇺🇸🙏

We have smaller fridges on average and our houses are generally smaller so I'm presuming we have less cupboard space. Also we use fewer preservatives so things like milk and bread are not as long-life. You can't buy a gallon of milk in the UK, for example. It would go off before you could use it. Also we are usually physically nearer to our shops so can get to them more easily. We have three mini-markets within a few minutes walk and a big supermarket a short drive away. So we pop out several times a week to buy what we need.

I've heard that the UK's farming industry has becoming increasingly mechanized, which helps to maximize harvests and reduce grocery prices. The UK tends to also have more private label products than the US. Which have higher profit margins because they cost less to produce. However salaries in the US are typically 2-3 times higher than the UK.

Also in the UK the way food is transported stored and distributed as becoming increasingly streamlined. All of this has helped to push down the price of groceries in the shops.

There's no way that salaries in the US are 2-3 times higher than in the UK. It entirely depends on the particular job, and many of those in lowly paid jobs in the States actually get LESS pay and fewer paid holidays than in the UK. I'd guess that on average the US pays 35-40% more but offers fewer holidays. That said, the general cost of living in the States is quite easily 35% higher than it is in the UK.

not sure Americans have more disposable income. They may earn more on a straight currency exchange but many things cost more, plus Americans tend to have bigger outgoings, including health care, monthly deductions for cars etc. Europeans, on average, have more disposable income and savings. Bizarre. Who is racking it in?

You grow it but you still have to transport it vast distances - don’t forget, the US is virtually as wide as the Atlantic, so it probably costs less to ship something across to us in vast quantities than it does to truck the same thing from the East to the West. Plus, the stuff that comes to us is always processed so it’s cheap to produce (and generally nasty to eat) and lasts a long time so that too makes it cheaper than real food.

If you compare the average salaries of both countries, the total price comes out to 0.05% of the average monthly salary in each country (I looked at Florida specifically in the US and used the latest available salary statistic from 2022 for each country). The UK is slightly more expensive if you expand the calculation by one digit with the US coming in at 0.052% and the UK coming in at 0.057%.

What about if your a single person in the USA, are there places you can buy smaller packets? It would be harder to get a varied diet.

@@FamilyFreedom I live alone and I buy things from Aldi all the time. In fact, there's on right next door to where I live. I buy my toilet paper there and not Costco since the square footage is bigger at Aldi.

People shop differently in the US than in the UK, I've found. We typically do a big shop once every week or two, so products are sized larger because they need to last longer.

Aldi came to NYC maybe 12 years ago? Don't recall for sure, but I had first seen it in Europe. I lived in London 1992-1993 and was personally a lover of Sainsbury's, even though it was a bit pricey for me at the time as I was a student. But back to Aldi, which is my local grocery store. The prices have gone way up here in NYC, but Aldi is still more affordable than other grocery stores. We don't have a Walmart in NYC so it would be hard for me to judge if their prices would beat Aldi's. I watched a bunch of budget Christmas dinner videos made in the UK v. the US, using Aldi groceries. I was shocked at how much more substantial and affordable the British Christmas dinners were compared to what I could have made from Aldi groceries in NYC using comparable prices. Of course I don't make a traditional British Christmas dinner, but I do need appetizers, some type of protein, potatoes, veggies, bread and dessert. I would say it cost me over 100 bucks to feed 6 people last Christmas shopping at Aldi. The turkey alone was about 25 dollars. I could have done a chicken, but that is not tradition for us. We do either turkey or beef at Christmas and admittedly I was not doing a budget challenge. Rather, I tend to go overboard so there are leftovers. But it certainly seems that you guys in the UK have much better options for affordable groceries. Anyway, love your videos and greetings from the Big Apple! The City that never sleeps and never fails to hit you in your wallet.

As far as processed foods go (anything in a can or a bag) the cheaper it is, the more harmful it is for your health . People should take that into consideration when they’re looking for the “best deal”.
