I have a very similar screen I built, only mine is 16x9 at 140” diagonal. I used 1x4 poplar with 1x2 supports on each side of the center speaker (DIYSG HTM-12s), all fastened with pocket screws (love Kregg’s jig). Black milliskin spandex with matte white over it. These screens are an absolute bargain, and it was one of your older videos that convinced me to build it. Like you, I have a young kid (2 year old), so spending thousands on an equivalent AT screen just doesn’t make sense...at least not to me.

Can u use any white spandex for a projection screen.? Great video
@FamilyHomeTheater5 ай бұрын
@@johnsmith-qz4bv I looked at spandex at the local fabric store to compare, and the milliskin has a much finer weave than what I can find at the store. The closer weave is less likely to be visible and will probably also not let as much light through.
@johnsmith-qz4bv5 ай бұрын
@@FamilyHomeTheater ok but would they still maybe visiable if u sit 9 feet back ..?..
@FamilyHomeTheater5 ай бұрын
@@johnsmith-qz4bv Itay work, but look at the surface also. Milliskin is also completely smooth whereas some spandex may be fuzzy on the surface. If you already have a projector you can maybe get a small sample to try. But mattei milliskin is just $15/of on Amazon. So you may save a few dollars locally but you'll end up spending more if you are unhappy.

Thanks for the video. Given that this screen material is not opaque, I would make all those speakers behind it as black as possible.

C'mon, man... It's pine. That wood is pine. Thanks for the video. If you want a cleaner build, there are some great, inexpensive tools that will help that screen look professional. Whatever works though! Thanks for the walk-through! LOVE seeing someone else implement neodymium magnets for projects!

The spandex appears to only come in 60" width, my screen size is over 63" in height... is there much stretch in that stuff? I mean could it stretch to 63" or would it then be too thin and transparent?

yes lots of stretch when i made mine.

Hello! Could you tell me please how many yards do I need for a 16:9 150" diagonal screen? Thanks in advance!
@FamilyHomeTheater2 жыл бұрын
I'd say 4 yards should be more than enough. However, material had a barely visible seam of some sort that did sometimes show up. So you could get 7 yards and if there is a seam, put that part in the 2nd layer behind the front layer.

What are your thoughts regarding curved vs. flat screen in 2.35 format. Do you see any problems with you image on this wide screen?
@FamilyHomeTheater4 жыл бұрын
For home theater, I'd say the screen should be flat. While it can be curved, probably most home theater projectors are set up for a flat screen. For me, I do have some chromatic abberation on the edges of my screen. But that is due to my relatively cheap $1300 projector having a relatively cheap lens. I have read reviews of more expensive projectors with much better optics, such as the BenQ HT9060, and they do display a perfect picture from edge to edge on a flat screen. However, if the screen were curved, focus can become an issue. The edge to edge tack sharp image could become slightly out of focus on the sides. So for a home theater, I'd stick with a flat screen.

Great video. I didnt think of using thumb tacks on mine. I guess Ill be pulling a lot of staples when Im ready to wash it.
@FamilyHomeTheater4 жыл бұрын
Yowza! Yes, the thumbtacks make it easy to take the material off and put it back on without tearing the screen too much. Of course, even if it does get irreparably damaged, spandex is inexpensive!

Got me confused you said top bar is 12 feet wide 120" @ :18 wouldn't 12' be 144". 56 3/4" side rails shouldn't this be 57.5" since lumber would be 3/4" x 3 3/4"(1x4). Just looking for clarification. Thanks

Got my laser projector and current screen bothers me with speckles, does spandex have any speckles with laser source?
@FamilyHomeTheater3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried a laser on mine. From what I've read, some projectors have speckle and some don't. I haven't read enough into it to really know what some manufacturers do to prevent it.

Hey man. Been watching all of your videos and love your approach :) I have also bought the RF7-ii’s and cant figure out if I should lift them up a bit so the lower woofer doesn’t fire straight into the frame of the screen. I can se you have chosen not to.. How is that working? Any difference noticable?
@FamilyHomeTheater3 жыл бұрын
I've thought about it but haven't actually tried it. I think I decided against it in favor of keeping the tweeters at ear level. So it is admittedly not ideal, and a trade-off to having an acoustically transparent screen vs a smaller screen with the towers off to the side.

@FamilyHomeTheater4 жыл бұрын
3 yards is more than enough. No sewing, I just had to cut.off the excess once the screen was all stretched.
@Dimrain133 жыл бұрын
Why not use a 16x9 screen as the default and then mask off the top and bottom for movies? That way you will always have a large screen vs having a smaller screen for 16x9 when you watch that content.
@FamilyHomeTheater3 жыл бұрын
It's mainly a personal choice. For me, I don't want TV shows to have a larger more immersive picture than Lord of the Rings. That and horizontal masking is a little more difficult to do than vertical masking.

Hi, I am from India and planning to get the spandex fabric from USA Spandexworld website. My screen size is 128" diagonal (118" width and 50" height) 2.35:1 ratio. How much yards of fabric should I order? They have mentioned the width in their website- 58/60" . So will this fit my diy screen without having to stich the fabric?
