Hey man great job on the screen, I'm considering making one myself. I'm not trying to be snarky here, just genuinely trying to help. The reason you had trouble with the Kreg clamp is because you were using the wrong one. That clamp is intended to hold your peices together to drive the screws after the pocket holes have been drilled. The one you needed has a flat disc on both sides, and it works much better. First of all I apologize for invading my opinion, I live in Southlake Texas, I've seen many videos on how to make a screen, and looking at the way I did it, I congratulate you ... and you have a lot of reason it is not necessary spend thousands of dollars when you can build yourself this screen, which in the end is equal to or better than one that is very expensive ... thanks for sharing your video

Great job Kennis, and fantastic that SOMEone finally is speaking out about the importance of a couple of cinematic realities. Everyone TALKS about having a Home Theatre, but compromise on these very essential aspects of cinema presentation. As you say, it is important that speakers need to be placed BEHIND the screen for maintaining the illusion of sound coming from the actors when they speak. This is why EVERY theatre on the planet places their speakers behind the screen. This also allows you to use a center channel with speakers of the same size and characteristics as the left and right speakers...again all theatres use three IDENTICAL speakers systems for the L, C, R channels. This idea of using a little puny toy speaker for the center channel as so many home theatre sound systems do, while it may be convenient, it's certainly not what the sound mixing engineers of a movie soundtrack expect the end playback system will be using. Is it any wonder why so many people complain that the dialogue is unintelligible or too low compared to the music score and sound effects -- well hello -- the dialogue which primarily is reproduced by the center channel is being played back by some dinky little speaker a forth the size and capacity of the Left and Right channel speakers. Duh. So congratulations Kennis on all counts -- great construction job, great understanding that speakers should be behind the screen to produce coherent sound localization and not off to the sides and underneath it and also, that most important and misunderstood concept of aspect ratios -- that CinemaScope/Panavision aspect ratio is supposed to get WIDER, not smaller than standard 1.66:1 or 1.85:1. Common height is the right way to go, not common width; common width completely defeats the reason they invented CinemaScope -- the whole purpose of CinemaScope was to make the image get wider than the standard image, not smaller and squatter. Finally you recognize the importance of the center channel. Good effin show!! Happy movie watching!

But now, with the Samsung Onyx 4K VIDEO WALL THEATERS taking over, there are no speakers behind the video walls obviously. Go to the JBL Pro Cinema Loudspeakers site to see what they are doing instead. Perforated screen th4eaters are going away, slowly but surely. When you have perf'd screen, both the image and the sound trying to break through from behind the screen are much compromised.

You were very smart to do this for health reasons alone. The regular VINYL screens are petroleum-based, and are awful for your lungs and respiratory system in dark, windowless spaces like screening rooms. Some will have the stink even 2 years after installation. So, SPANDEX or POLYSTER SILK, yes, and if you have a little more $$ or €€, then ORGANIC SILK from China or Iran (here in Europe, we are permitted to purchase products from Iran, believe it or not). No Russian silk, though. :-))

You should try ivory spandex if you like a warmer color. Some projectors can be calibrated more accurately with the ivory.

Will this screen work with Ultra Short Throw projectors since the angle of light will make the light bounce to the ceiling? Normally the vendors suggest to use light rejection screens. Appreciate your feedback. Great cost saving idea.

You made this screen to get the right coverage of picture , without seeing the black bars. And then you covered the inches of seen screen with tape. So now the picture is smaller again. I saw as you put the tape on, the video was getting covered. Interesting to use lycra material. But since alr screens are the best, you should have tried to get silver color.

I think I saw on AVS that the two listed in the video description (matte) make a gain of 0.9 or 1.0. If you went with shiny, that would change that. If you need a higher gain, try shiny.

Nice job! I had originally ordered a standard 92" 16:9 screen but per recommendations on AVSForums, I was told I should look into 2:39 and I came across your video. I followed your links for the black and white Spandex, but I don't recall how much you ordered in yards overall. The area I'm working with is 130 3/4" x 48"...I'm not sure what makes a perfect 2:39 ratio but I could go about 10" higher if needed. What do you suggest on yards needed in each color? I also don't see a link for the black felt you used on the border.

I'll help out here....if 48"is your maximum allowable screen height, the width of a 2.39:1 image would be 115" (124" diagonal) For that size you would need to order4 yards each of Black & White Milliskin. Come back onto AVS to get some really constructive help.

The thing that is annoying me about the Spandex sheets is they seem to only come in 58/60" height maximum, so there is no way to make bigger screens than this height.

Well it does stretch a great deal. 60” could probably stretch 80” or more.

Are you still happy with your screen? Does it have enough of a gain for 3D content? I need this inexpensive solution to work, because acoustically transparent screens are so expensive.

Yes and yes. I say give it a shot. Realize though that 3D is about half the brightness on any screen and will never be like a 2D movie. That being said, the first thing I did was buy a bunch of 3D movies and really enjoy watching them. My conclusion is that the weakest link in 3D that make 3D frustrating is 1. Glasses fit and function (everyone’s face is different. I have three brands of glasses and some prefer different brands). 2. Room needs to be really dark. 3. Bad movies, some 3D movies are not that good. 4. Projector settings (just have to play around with it). 5. Screen, which I have has no problem with. Anyway I hope that helps.

Hello, I went to spandexworld.com but it's overwhelming what they have; what kind of spandex did you actually order so I can order the same? I also noticed you have what seems to be an Epson 3700, 3500, Am I right? How did you get that projector to throw 2.35:1 without having to adjust zoom manually ? If I'm not mistaking those two model number cannot project wide screen like that. Great video by the way.

That's what I thought, I had the 3700 for a short while and never noticed that feature. Next year Epson should come out with a true or faux 4K version to compete with Optoma and Benq at around same price as 5040UB which I hope supports 3D. Thanks for sharing the spandex info and I think I'm going to make me a screen like yours.

You should give more specific credit to the DIY Screen Forum on AVS since 90% of everything done right in the Video came from that source. It is a respectable effort....but a lot was "seat of your Pants" and that isn't a good way to teach people.

I've got an Artlii 720p projector about 14-15ft away from the wall I'm projecting to, 126"x58" picture, does this spandex stuff stretch enough to make a frame that big? Should I not stretch it? The diagonal is almost 140" across, so not buying one of those cheap 120" projector screens from eBay. I plan on hanging it like a picture, maybe 3D printing a cleats to hang it and be able to take it off.
