In 1871, during the Meiji Restoration the Yen was introduced to unify all the different currencies with incompatible denominations. At that time there were two smaller denominations where there were 1 yen was the same as 100 sen or 1000 rin. The sen and rin was taken out of circulation at the end of 1953. So a ticket was 1.5 sen or 15 rin.

Dōgo Onsen is one of the oldest hot springs, mentioned in writing during the 8th century as one of the Three Ancient Springs. The current bathhouse was built in 1894, and it is huge.

Went to Matsuyama in 2019... my favorite place was the (free) footbath around and up the hill overlooking Dogo Onsen, where I could catch a beautiful view of... all the scaffolding hiding the facade from sight while it was being restored. The obsession with Bocchan in the city is kinda weird when, as a Westerner, you haven't even heard of the novel ever before. But then again, during my 3 days there I only saw a grand total of 4 other Westerners - plenty of Asian tourists, though. Would definitely recommend a visit - Shikoku is a great experience in general, especially as a contrast to metropolises like Osaka or Tokyo.

Hi there! Just to let some people learn something new when watching this, Clam shells mostly consist of Calcium Carbonate, which is an ingredient in making cement. Therefore I think what the board is trying to say is that they reuse the clams that were made from the onsen’s clam soups etc and turn them into cement that can help reinforce the walls. I could be wrong about the usage thingie, but the composition of clam shells does contain Calcium Carbonate
@dark_knight1093 жыл бұрын
Calcium carbonate actually has quite a few uses and yes, clam shells are frequently used for them. I'm a metallurgist and several metallurgy reactions that require calcium carbonate as a reactant or catalyst use clam shells when being carried out on an industrial scale. It sounds weird, but it does work.

I lived in Matsuyama for a year and it's such a lovely and convenient city to live in. It's very peaceful and you can reach everything important within a day. You can see all important sight-seeing spots within a day (by foot) because most things are very close. I remember going on midnight walks with friends all across town, from Dogo Onsen, to Okaido, all the way to Gintengai (two big shopping streets that are connected and lead to the main train station) :) I got quite emotional seeing all these familiar places again in the video. I just love Matsuyama so much and you learn to appreciate the little details about a city when living there. It's sad so many stores seemed to be closed in Dogo shopping street. I hope they didn't have to close for good due to the pandemic. To be fair, Dogo Onsen looks great on the outside, but the inside really isn't anything special. You can easily find nicer Onsen all across Japan. I love the ones with an outside bath and several pools. Dogo Onsen has just one, hot, indoor bath. They also don't provide and soap and shampoo, so be aware to bring your own or buy some outside of the chaning room. The other, newer onsen next to Dogo Onsen actually look nicer from the inside. Dogo looks big on the outside, but that's because part of the building is only accessable via tours (it has the emperors bath and toilet) and it has a place where you can sit in your Yukatta and enjoy some tea and a cookie when you get the pricier ticket. If you go to Matsuyama you can also check out Ishiteji temple with "wonderlandesque" grounds with many things to discover. It is number 51 of the famous 88 temple pilgrimage that leads all around Shikoku. The temple has a small, tunnel you can go through and you might even see a bat or two haning on the walls ;) Matsuyama castle is also beautiful. You can reach it by roapway or walk up in around 15 minutes. Matsuyama has a bunch of footbaths. You can get a map for them at the tourist info right at the Bottchan train entrance to the Dogo shopping street. Some footbaths belong to hotels but you are allowed to use them for free (even without ordering anything). Some are very close to the Onsen. There are many more nice locations one can see, though some I would recommend to exchange students ect. who stay in Matsuyama longer and want to ride their bycicle somewhere to have a bit of a change in scenery. Many of those locations are no world wonders, but they are still lovely little details and certainly more interesting than spending all day indoors.

Thank you for the information. Matsuyama seems like a nice city to live in but sadly it’s too small for me. I currently live in a city of 400,000 but I want to live in one with a population of 1 million.
