You were in Virginia and you ate Arthur Treacher’s? I’m not knocking it... you didn’t like the local fish eateries? My family is from Hampton and I can’t wait to get there to this day to get some fresh caught fish sandwiches! Nothing like it!

The times that I've eaten Arthur Treacher's , what impressed me was the malt vinegar that set the whole meal off. It was a long time ago, I was young, and it was a new thing for me. My stomach is growling just thinking about it.

The batter was excellent. I used to eat the chicken version as a kid, because fish is just hit or miss. Wish it would make a comeback. I generally do not like fast food, but this was a keeper, that they lost.

Thank you for this! I worked at the Arthur Treachers on Mentor Ave. in Mentor, Ohio in 1987/88. Great great memories! After close we would take the sandwich buns, dip them in the batter and fry them. A little sugar on top and we had ourselves some fresh hot donuts....just so everyone knows; the 80s were a glorious time...

I don't know if I consider Arthur Treachers seafood. Sure its fish, but as an avid seafood and fish eater, battering and deep frying makes it so you barely taste the fish.
@charlesbaldo

@@captainamericaamerica8090 I ate both, I enjoyed them. I just don't consider them seafood. You said it yourself, its the thick crisp crunch of the batter thats the star. It could be a piece of chicken and would be the same. I eat a lot of fish, a nice piece of King Salmon, just baked with maybe a wine lemon sauce and a broiled scallop on the side. To me thats seafood.

Had to like this comment because I used to work with Alan! I only had Arthur Treacher's once when I was a kid. The food was good, but not really in my family's restaurant orbit. The name popped up in my head years ago, so I had to research Arthur Treacher. I was disney Castmember at the time, so I recognized the name. Very cool to see how that worked with this company.

Just imagine how perfect it would have been if Arthur Treacher's had SPOTTED DICK on the dessert menu! Yes, it has a ridiculous name, but spotted dick is a very popular British dessert! And believe it or not, HEINZ (yes, the same company very famous for their KETCHUP which started in Pittsburgh) sells microwaveable spotted dick in a can! Of course the Heinz Spotted Dick is hard to find in America, but I've seen it at Wegmans stores in the international food section. And the malt vinegar you remember was probably made by HEINZ too.

@@stever4181 Vatican II and the Modernist canon law changes after it wreaked havoc on the Church. One casualty was fish on Fridays. It went from mandatory to voluntary and leftist bishops effectively did away with the rule all together, violating the intent of canon law. A long involved topic which is currently the center of great dissension in the Church now (Traditionalism vs. Modernism). A minority of traditional Catholics eat fish on Friday, nothing like the masses in the 1960's and early 1970's. Some restaurants and fast food places still carry fish options for that very reason. Probably the reason McDonald's carried their fish sandwich. Long John Silvers and the remaining H. Salt Fish and Chips still serve this niche, along with their other customers.

We had one in our city and in the beginning the cod was great. When Treacher's served pollock, I got sick, to say the least, and to this day I cannot eat Pollock fish, fried or otherwise. Great video, I didn't know The restaurant's background story. Thanks!

One of the last of these restaurants closed in Lansing Michigan in 2018. If you Google 2418 East Michigan Avenue Lansing Michigan, you'll see the building still has that iconic sign out front. Although now it's a Mexican restaraunt.

There was one in Dolton? I only remember the one on 159th down from River Oaks. There was also a Jack In The Box right near it at one time. That closed first, then about 7 or 8 years later the Arthur Treacher's closed. Then later Shakey's Pizza closed. =(

Arthur Treachers used to be all over in Ohio. We had one here in Fremont but it closed in the 80s. The building still stands but it's a hair salon now. Someone opened another one here in the 90s but it didn't last long. Maybe the wife and I will take a ride over to Garfield Heights soon for some fish n chips!

There is a former Arthur Treachers in Columbus OH that is now called Marino's.Seafood Fish and Chips. It has been open for over 25 years. It still has the same roofline and lantern sign. Thanks for giving viewers some background on Treacher who, I suspect, most American's saw as Merv's version of Ed McMahon. The menus were not very diverse and, for the unenlightened, "chips" were not potato chips but more like french fries. I may be wrong but I think Long John Silver's was in business during the same time, at least in the south. "Cod Wars!" LOL. Someone should make a movie about that. AARGHH!

I used to work at an Arthur Treachers in Hamilton, Ohio in 1977 on Erie Blvd. while in High School! I remember Friday nights were insanely busy. I loved their huge potatoes/chips and used to fill the inside of them with a squirt of catsup from a pointy bottle of catsup and they were delicious! Kinda like a jelly filled donut sort of deal! Ha Ha! There was a plaque that commemorated where legendary Rocker Sir Elton John sat when he ate a meal there a few years after I worked there! He stopped there before playing a concert at Miami University Millet Hall in nearby Oxford, Ohio! The place is now a hot dog/gyros fast food joint.
