@Christian Burden. You may have seen my comment. How does a single franchise location work? Did you takeover the corporate aspect as a sole last location? I can't see a parent company supplying just one restaurant and keep it going. I wish you were around here in southern New Hampshire, we don't have any Fish and Chips resurants around here... which is surprising for New England. If I am ever in the area I will be sure to stop in for a meal.

Part of what made Arthur Treachers go down was the change in quality. The chain was bought my Mrs. Paul's in 1979, and they switched from using Icelandic Cod to Alaskan Pollock, which is cheaper. So those of us who ate there in the 70's, would most likely have a different experience.
@akbarlebowitz81512 жыл бұрын
Yes, the quality suffered when they changed the fish. Chicken & Chips was a better choice for me.

This is what I heard too, but could it have been THAT much worse as to destroy the chain? I ate there a lot, but don’t recall any point where I noticed a big difference. Of course, I was a kid smoking a lot of weed in those days, so I probably couldn’t tell anyway.

The Cleveland/Akron area was one of the last holdouts for Arthur Treacher's. Toward the end there were locations in Garfield Heights, the city of Akron, and in Austintown (near Youngstown), in addition to Cuyahoga Falls. The Garfield Heights location was the second to last location. Owned by the same people who own the last one in Cuyahoga Falls. That one closed due to Covid-related staffing issues, as well as having to do only carry-out business, since that location did not have a drive thru. I have been to the Cuyahoga Falls location twice since the Garfield Heights location closed. I still love their food.

Wow, I didn't know there were any Arthur Treacher's locations remaining. Treacher himself died nearly 50 years ago, and I'll hazard a guess that most people under the age of 60 or so wouldn't even know who he was. Interestingly, in 1989 I was on the TV game show "Couch Potatoes" hosted by Marc Summers (all three episodes are on my KZbin channel) and Arthur Treacher was the answer to one of the trivia questions during the game. Surprisingly, one of my teammates who was only 22 or 23 at the time knew the answer! Treacher was the announcer and sidekick on The Merv Griffin Show for five years in the 1960s. Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips joins Blockbuster Video in Bend, OR and Steak Corral in Whittier, CA in the "There's only one left" club! Thanks for the video. Happy holidays!

After Mr. Treacher's film career he became well known on television in the U.S. as an announcer/sidekick to talk show host Merv Griffin. The restaurant also served cod instead of the pollock. Growing up where I did we had a great fish & chips place named LONDON TOWNE across the street from my high school. We constantly snuck off campus to go to London Towne for lunch, of course if we got caught we had to serve a couple days of detention but it was worth it. The fish place by my house when I was a wee one was Hungry Penguin. Nice chunks of what was probably cod in a batter that must have had some fair amount of sugar in it because of how beautifully dark brown it caramelized. My family loved Hungry Penguin fish & chips. When The Penguin closed, Arthur Treacher came to the next town over, and that became our fish place. I loved their version of the fish sandwich (a handful of a bun loaded with a full-sized battered fish portion and melted cheese sauce poured over, with a side cup of tartar sauce) -- WAY better than that travesty of a thing I mockingly called the "McFish" (a flat bun hiding a playing-card-thick wafer of crumb coat surrounding flakes of possible fish, a third of a slice of American-flavored-processed-cheese-food, and a sparsity of tartar sauce). For several years, we were just a few minutes' drive from Arthur Treacher, Long John, and H. Salt, as well as some non-chain purveyors of fine fish & chips. Now they are all closed. All closed. By the way -- the Christmas Eve celebration feast at my house last weekend was fish & chips, with a warm cabbage salad instead of cole slaw. Extra chips left over for breakfast Christmas morning. And we still miss Hungry Penguin.

Many many years ago, my Mother's best friend (she was from England and met her husband there during WW11, married him and moved to NJ) used to work in pubs, somehow she got her hands on the original recipe for Arthur Treachers Fish batter. It was incredible, we tried some taste tests because we had an Arthur Treachers near us and nobody could tell the difference. One of the best things to do when cooking the fish is to let the batter drip a little as you drop it in the oil and you get a lot of the crunchy bits. Delicious! Oh, malt vinegar is a must on the fish, dip the chips in tartar sauce and yum!

@@watershipdown3630 I've been using the recipe for so many years that it became something I did without measuring anything so when I saw your comment I was unsure about how to share it with you, while also wondering if it would be okay. I lost my Mom in 2014 (followed by my Dad in 2015 and younger brother in 2016, they all knew the recipe too) so since I couldn't ask her for real, I asked her in my head to send me a sign as to what I should do after looking in her recipe box and not finding it. Just a few minutes ago I was putting one of her recipes for Christmas cookies on the fridge with a magnet and a small scrap of paper slid onto the floor with the recipe! It's been broken down to a small enough batch for a pound of fish (I use cod or haddock usually) : 3/4 cup of flour 3/4 cup of water 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 tblsp white vinegar Mix ingredients together, coat the fish generously with batter then cook in oil, enough to cover fish, approximately 2 minutes per side Use malt vinegar when you eat 😊 I hope it turns out as good as mine does! My first job in 1978 was Arthur Teacher's in Norwalk, CT. This brings back memories. North Atlantic whitefish was what we sold and it had a long triangular shape. Chips were like steak fries but not as dense and were grooved. We only used 100% peanut oil as it has a high smoke point and no taste transfer of fish on chicken etc. I miss the brand. Great video.

Arthur Treacher's was my very first job at 16 in Parma Heights, OH at Southland. I was a fry cook. They used peanut oil to fry everything.The fish were frozen wedges we dipped in the batter and threw in a huge fryer that I had clean out every night (pita!). The "chips" were potato wedges, better than those skimpy fries they got now. I made $4.25/ hr. I came home smelling like fish and had oil burn red dots on my arms from the oil popping up on my arms. lol

I loved Arthur Treachers! We had 2 within 15 miles of each other (here in KY, and 1 across the river into WV). The fish was awesome and the hush puppies were always a good cornbread/biscuit hybrid. But their chips - I remember them being more oblong/round with the 3 grooves in them, not quite so severely stick-like. When LJS took over my town's AT, they had a hard time selling baskets of fries because they weren't like AT's so they'd top theirs with the crispy crumbles of batter from the grease pit. I also remember Dad stopping on the way home from work and getting a big boat of chips and hush puppies to bring home when Mom would make burgers for dinner. Akron isn't TOO long a drive from here.. sounds like a perfect spring 2023 road trip!!

I was a little kid, but remember very well when he walked with a cane, very dapper and distinguished. The malt vinegar dressing in the bottle was very unique. The fish had an offset triangular shape, with wider fries.Thanks for the memories!

I just went and visited that Arthur treachers in Cuyahoga falls this past fall of my parents. We live in the Cleveland area and took a nice fall road trip and had dinner there. It is the original recipe and it is close by the Cuyahoga national Valley Park. Would highly recommend taking a train ride or a walk through the kahaga Valley and then finish it off with a visit to Arthur treachers and even a nice walk through downtown Cuyahoga Falls which there is a beautiful view and park area that overlook the fall area

Arthur Treacher’s was my first job in the spring of 1977. I was 16 and was on the first crew hired at the brand new store opened in Valparaiso, Indiana. I see on the menu shared here that they still serve Lemon Luv fried pies..SO, So Good! If you get a chance to visit this last Treacher’s.. make sure you get a Lemon Luv for dessert!!

Great! I worked at ATs as well - Somerville and Woburn MA. I was 16 also. I started in Nov 77. It was my first real job. Many good folks and memories. The Lemon Luv pies were beyond awesome! I also liked the "Chicken on a bun" (wish i could duplicate it - with fresh cole slaw and sweet Russian dressing). I might need to make a road trip...

I lived in Cuyahoga Falls for 4 years. It's a nice little city, and I always thought it was so random that the last Arthur Treacher's was there. I ate there several times. I actually think their chicken may even be better than their fish.

I love Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips! We had one in my little town in NJ. My Mum was from England and for a treat we would eat there. She always used vinegar on her fish. I loved the shrimp boat as well as the fish and chips. And I loved the Lemon Luv dessert! So glad to see it's still on the menu in the last shop!

I have been to England a few times, and both are quite authentic!! I am so glad you put this video together!! My dad (93) has been craving Arthur Treacher's for decades!! @@earthsucks9555 No.. to some it’s a required taste. Most of the younger drinkers are Lager drinkers like Carling, Heineken, Coors, Budweiser on tap or bottle. I myself like a Craft small brewery type Beer.

I’m learning things today Is Boddington’s still available? Thanks England is definitely on my bucket list If I was able to watch a soccer match in England, what city/team would give me that specific & unique English experience? The reason I ask is--- I was once asked by a man from Denmark what American football team/city/game would give him that unique American experience. I said that the Green Bay Packers or Pittsburgh Steelers would give you that classic feeling.
@paulhollis88792 жыл бұрын
@@earthsucks9555 Im pretty sure Boddington is around although you won’t be spoiled for choice. There’s lots of alternatives - try ‘em! About the soccer, I know where you going with that - you want the real thing - not a corporate retail experience. In London it would be Crystal Palace or Fulham to watch - old school grounds with a diehard support. Fulham’s ground is on the banks of the Thames and is a lovely ground. In the Midlands - Aston Villa, again a lovely ground but much bigger. Newcastle is in the far north-east, you might not make it up there but are known for their fanatical support (and their accent).

Nice video! I'm glad I stumbled upon your page. I remember Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips very well from my childhood. The catch prase I remember was "The Meal You Can Not Make At Home". My father used to take us there quite often, and we loved it. I do remember the food being quite good- both the fish and the chicken. The chips (fries_ were wide and ridged, with a good flavor. I was surprised to hear that they hand bread the fish. But I guess since this is the only location now, it makes sense becuase they don't have to bring in a mass produced frozen item. I remember the hush puppies too, pretty much the way you described them. Nice trip down memory lane!

Fascinating! I live in Lorain Ohio,just west of Cleveland,so a venture to this last Arthur Treachers may be in order. I just got back from London,and yes,tartar sauce is an option,not necessarily preferred,but it’s there. If you go to London,you MUST go to Greenwich,there is the Legendary Trafalgar Tavern,home to the best fish and chips EVER. The cod melts in your mouth,and the chips,they are like nothing I have ever had! Golden and crispy on the outside,but somehow,on the inside,it is literally mashed potatoes,it is so inexplicably creamy. I and the customers around me were literally gasping with amazement at the supreme quality that sat in front of us! People were literally taking photos and videos of this experience! Me? I stole the fork,I use it every day,my Trafalgar fork😂
