The Graveyard Channel

5 жыл бұрын

Today, my travels take me to the famous Los Angeles City Hall landmark in downtown Los Angeles, California to visit the free observation deck and to remember actor Jack Webb and his TV series Dragnet.
I also visit Jack Webb's grave site at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
Thanks for joining me on another nostalgic road trip down memory lane.

This is the city....Los Angeles, California.....I love Dragnet. Jack Webb in my humble opinion was perhaps one of the greatest Producers radio or television ever had. He believed in realism and gave Los Angles Policemen their due credit. Keep up the good work Steve.

You are so right about Jack Webb. Another interesting think about his production company Mark VII Limited, that it' was his arms you see all dirty and wet hammering out the insignia with the mallet at the end of his TV productions.

Omg just reading those words.....Webb was a fantastic booster of l.a. and law and order. He would die seeing how dems have corrupted the government. And destroyed the city forever. IDk how the city will ever recover from democritis. All rights would have to be stripped away. Trillions would have to be spent building DOZENS of mental hospitals and VAST desert prisons a'la joe Arizona sheriff guy. That will never happen, as we know, so, ultimately, vagrants will overtake the entire town.

It's my understanding that Jack Webb was planning a third Dragnet TV series. Sadly, he died before he could make it happen. Also, he was John Landis' first choice to play Dean Wormer in Animal House. Webb turned him down. He was known to have a great sense of humor, but had none where his image was concerned. A fine example of his humor was the Clean Copper Clappers sketch he did with Johnny Carson.

Love Jack Webb and all the work he created. I've even found most of the radio episodes online. His first 'partner' on the radio show was "Ben Romero", played by Barton Yarborough. Yarborough died suddenly in December 1951, and the next episode of Dragnet called "The Big Sorrow" told of Ben Romero's sudden passing in character. Yarborough is also buried in Forest Lawn.

I've heard the Disney Concert Hall almost got taken down due to the reflective nature of its steel shell. It was reflecting too much light and heat into traffic and either causing collisions or near misses. After enough complaints and some research, the city told Disney to do something pronto about it or lose it. Disney called in some architects/engineers who studied the building and concluded that altering the exterior by dulling the finish would stop the reflections. It took some time, and Disney execs were a bit worried the alterations would fail, but it turned out it was the right way to go.
@TheGraveyardChannel
@TheGraveyardChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, I hadn't heard that, but I remember thinking how dull it looked this time compared to the last time I was there. I just thought it was the early morning shade. That's a shame, it was so beautiful in its original state, but the glare from some of these buildings can be blinding, so it makes sense. Thanks for sharing that, Walter!

Awesome tribute to Jack Webb and awesome video of LA City Hall. Jack Webb was the creator along with Robert A. Cinder of Adam 12 and Emergency. I talked with Robert Fuller (Dr. Brackett on Emergency) few times and I remember Robert Fuller tell that he was called into Jack Webb's office and told Robert that he (Jack) wanted Robert to play a emergency room doctor and Robert stated that he was not interested because he was used to do western shows and that's what he really wanted to do, but Jack wasn't a no from Robert, so Robert took the role. Rampart General Hospital was represented by Harbor General Hospital, located in Torrance is now Harbor General Hospital was renamed as Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1978. County of Los Angeles Fire Department Station 127 was the filming location of the station 51 for engine and squad pulling out of the station and shots of returning to the station and shots of the front station. In 1999 the title was transferred, and Squad 51 was then donated to the Los Angeles County Fire Museum in Bellflower, California. Both engines used in the show are in the museum too. I was present for the 1999 reunion of Emergency and have returned for other reunion events prior to 2007. The driver of the fire engine (Mike Stoker) was an actual firemen and he held AGS card so he could be in the show and drive the engine. The 1st Captain on the show was an actual Captain and he had retired from LACOFD, then that is when they brought Michael Norell in as Captain. Sam Lanier (uncredited voice of dispatcher) was an actual LACOFD dispatcher and his voice was normally who you heard when the station received dispatching at the station or heard on the radio conversations with dispatcher. LACOFD Fire Station 127, located at 2049 East 223rd Street (between Wilmington Ave and Alameda St, with the 405 freeway visible in the background in wide shots) in Carson, California, last I knew, they will offer tours of the stations and you the break/lounge room, bunk rooms and station office and last time I was there, they still had some pictures of the tv show in the lounge room. Thanks for the outstanding video and thanks for sharing.

@@TheGraveyardChannel Oh yeah, I am a big fan of Emergency, right along with Adam 12 and Dragnet too. Just to be totally honest with you, I had seen Robert Fuller, Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe last year in June at a event in Tunica, MS and I had plans on going this year, but I changed my plans for this year in June, because I wanted to meet you in June and spend enjoyable time meeting my new friend, you! Plus with Johnny Crawford not able to come this year and Don "Jug" Reynolds passing away in January, just not going to be the same event this year. I can always drive down to Texas and swing by Robert Fuller's ranch on my way to visit my cousin. I'm excited with you coming to do some vlogs and showing you around here.

Jack lived in The Sierra Towers in West Hollywood at the time of his death. Jack was given a near police officer funeral or a police officers funeral by the L. A. P. D. because they were happy with how Adam 12 was produced, it was great PR for the Dept and many men and women became police officers because of the show. On a sad note, Jack's daughter Stacy whom he had with ex wife Julie London was killed in a crash with a C. H. P. car at the age of 46 on Sept. 27, 1996.

Even though I didn't see the whole movie when it aired on TV , I do remember seeing Jack Webb in "Sunset Boulevard " with William Holden and Gloria Swanson . Most people don't seem to remember him for being in that movie , I guess because it was a small role . Everyone will always remember him as Sgt.Joe Friday .

Dragnet, (in black and white), then the updated series, (in color), during the 1960's, plus Adam-12 and Emergency! If I recall correctly, Jack Webb's ex-wife was on Emergency! along with her second husband, Bobby Troup, (who wrote the song "Route 66"). Jack Webb remained friends with both his ex-wife and her second husband. Many memories.

Wow! That's been in a lot. I do recognize it. I used to watch Dragnet late at night. I could definitely see how being an early bird would be a benefit . I dont think I have seen the sculpture though. The fountain was really cool. Love the view from up top! Love the sort of old school detective music you put with this.

Jack Webb’s grave is so plain for someone who had so many accomplishments in life. Not only was Dragnet one of the first police series that I watched but he was a star on the silver screen as a drill instructor in the Marine Corps (D.I.). I believe he also produced and directed many television programs during he lifetime. Great man!

You're right. Before R. Lee Ermey was Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 movie -'Full Metal Jacket,' there was Jack Webb as Gunnery Sergeant Moore in the 1957 movie - 'The D.I.' Also, Darren McGavin and Earl Holliman play Marine D.I.'s in the 1970 Jan-Michael Vincent movie - 'Tribes.'

Thanks for another great vlog, Steve! Another Jack Webb produced show, Emergency! co-starred Jack's ex wife, actress/singer Julie London, and her husband, songwriter/actor Bobby Troup who wrote the songs Daddy & (Get your kicks on) Route 66, the latter which was a hit for Nat King Cole.

London is interred in the same cemetery as Webb. I was going to mention it, but the video was getting too long, so I decided not to. I will probably do an Emergency vlog and mention it there. Thanks for sharing this with us, Mary!

My mom has a picture of her with a cardboard double of Jack Webb, along with doubles of Reed and Malloy from Adam -12. She was working at Universal Studios, at the time. She worked in that all black building on Lankersheim. I believe that that building was constructed about 1964, or 65. Jack Webb reportably had a special reserved table for him at the Cock & Bull Restaurant on the Sunset Strip, he was such a regular there. Years ago my mom got me the recipe for their welsh rarebit.
