Yes!! I was visiting my grandparents grave yesterday and I noticed a Dr. was buried right next to them. I literally said the same exact thing, teachers (my grandparents were), doctors , whoever, you all end up *buried in the same place .

Marilyn first and foremost was a human being just like all of us, but sadly she was part of an industry that most of the time does not treat you as a human being, but as just a source of money, profit and power. I also believe that Marilyn was a lonely person and because of her sad life story (she didn't have a loving family; she grew up in foster homes), all she wanted was to be truly loved and accepted. I feel that she felt she was invisible and she just wanted to be seen as the smart and intelligent woman she really was. In the end, she just wanted what we all look for in our lives: true love and happiness.

@@carolinep.m.8979 You're welcome, Caroline. I hesitate to use the word "victim" as I think it's become a "go to", but as with everything, there are exceptions. Like Elvis, I think Marilyn became a victim of her own fame and image, and what a struggle it must have been to sustain that. I remember Elvis ruefully answering a question on that subject, saying "the man is different from the image". Marilyn was propped up, held up, made up, and told to go perform. They didn't care about her heart. They were sharks circling the water. They didn't take her seriously, and this must have hurt her deeply, with unpleasant memories of her childhood. A good thing is she left behind a wonderful legacy, with fans even fifty-five or so years later, who recognized her for the smart woman she really was.

Marilyn gave this cemetery it's legendary status. Before her entombment here, there were no superstars there. Now, because of her, it's the most star packed cemetery in the world. Yes, Marilyn was named after a similar looking Broadway star, Marilyn Miller. And, Monroe was her family name. Norma Jeane came from Norma Jeane Cohen of Louisville, KY. where Gladys, Marilyn's mother was briefly a Nanny to the little Jewish girl. There's many other stars here like Jack Lemmon, Hugh Hefner, etc.

Dean loved Marilyn a lot. They was filming a movie together when Marilyn was having problem with her line, they wanted to replace her. Dean wouldn't agree to it, once she die they made the movie anyway except without Dean.

@@toniwilson1579 Yes, Dean was a stand up guy in my books and had dear Marilyn's back. The movie that Dean & Marilyn were working together on was, "Something's Got To Give" (1962). Unfortunately due to Marilyn having personal problems, being late - not showing up altogether, being "ill", flying off to the JFK birthday bash in New York, etc., 20th Century Fox had enough and fired her. Only a few usable scenes had been been completed by Marilyn and the delays were costing the studio money. Plus, Elizabeth Taylor's, "Cleopatra" was plaguing Fox with costs and delays as well...not to mention paying Elizabeth one million dollars to star in it, which was an unheard of sum of money to pay a star back then. Elizabeth had joked that she'd play Cleopatra if they gave her a million. She didn't think Fox would take her seriously. Anyway, with all this going on, things just went downhill for Marilyn and everyone involved. One actress suggested to replace Marilyn was Lee Remick...Dean had nothing against Lee, but he had signed to co-star with Marilyn and no one else...no Marilyn, no Dean! Eventually Marilyn was rehired by Fox, at a higher salary (but still paled in comparison to Elizabeth's), to resume the filming in September of '62, but unfortunately Marilyn passed away at the age of only 36, on August 5th (I *believe* she really passed away late in the evening of the 4th)....With Marilyn sadly gone, the movie was recast with Doris Day and James Garner in the lead roles...and re-titled, "Move Over Darling", which came out in 1963. Not to take away from Doris and James, but I so wished that the version with Marilyn & Dean was completed...it would have been magical with them in it. Just judging by the scenes that were completed, Marilyn just sparkled and was still so stunningly beautiful in 1962....I'm glad both Marilyn and Dean's crypts are not that far apart...friends since the early 1950s and now in the great beyond. God bless their beautiful souls.

Dean was devastated after the death of his son Dino. I remember his grand son stating he witnessed the implosion reaction Dean experienced when he was told they recovered Dino’s body by rescue workers. He was 35 and died with another, Capt. Ramon Ortiz. The plane he was flying , one of three F4-C Phantom Jets ,on maneuvers ,had crashed into one of San Bernardino Mountains. He was a member of the California Air National Guard, and crashed during a military training flight.

Interesting story I read about Marilyn Monroe; it was from a friend of hers. They talked about how they were walking with Marilyn through New York City one day, and nobody was even giving her a second glance. The friend was baffled, and turned to Marilyn to remark about how strange it was that nobody in New York City of all places was recognizing her. Marilyn simply looked at her and said “oh, you want to see me be her?” and in an instant, she switched from Norma Jean and turned on her Marilyn Monroe persona. Everyone began to notice her after that, and a whole crowd formed. That just goes to show you how different she was in real life from the persona she always put on.

I visited Marilyn Monroe in the 90's while I was still young (26), and there was something so eerie about the site, you could feel her actual presence, after kissing the stone I felt her leave the cemetery with me. OH boy did the drama of my young life kick into high gear not long after that! (no joke)

We visited this cemetery in 2012, the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death. We recognized a lot of names on the headstones, but today, after watching your videos, I know more about the people we heard of as well as names we didn't know. I read online that the ashes were split between Mrs. Carson and Jack Dunphy and only her part was sold. The part that was Jack's was actually mixed with his own ashes when he passed and they were scattered in Long Island when Dunphy died. At least part of it was treated respectfully.

I'm only in my 20s and yet I love and miss Marilyn Monroe so much that even I don't understand it. It's truly heartbreaking that the most beautiful angel to ever exist was never afforded the proper love and care she so deserved. Reduced to her beauty and sensuality I believe people could never see beyond her looks to notice that she was just as beautiful if not more on the inside. I live about 4 miles from this cemetary, and have walked around in there for hours looking at and reading the headstones. Surprisingly, it's a VERY small and unassuming cemetary tucked away behind busy Westwood Blvd., office buildings and a CVS..can't believe so many greats are laid to rest there. I'm a massive fan of Old Hollywood. I love seeing these vids, thank you..subbed..

When I visited Westwood Cemetary in 1989 I stopped in meaning just to take a quick peek. It was the middle of the week and I had the whole place to myself. I ended up spending two hours. It's an odd place surrounded by sky scrapers. It's hard to imagine what it was like so many years ago that made so many stars want to be buried there. I was surprised to find Marilyn and so many others. I mean it is just packed with Hollywood stars. I think I read that all the spaces had been sold long ago when people thought about where they'd like to be buried or interred. Very interesting place. Get a guide book first, though. And plan to spend some time with your favorites. Marilyn's is easy to find due to the color of the stone.

Dean Martin. My favorite singer and .. as Sinatra called "the greatest singer that ever lived" was never drunk. It was well known and brought into light by his daughter and other close relatives. It was an act. He had a glass of Apple Juice never alcohol. Just a fun fact. It was all an act.

George Vreeland Hill It's a pretty, meticulously gardened/maintained little cemetery tucked among office buildings. I grew up in S. Pasadena and our former vaudevillian neighbor knew Marilyn. An artist friend of my parents actually lived next door to her. She waited to tell me who her famous neighbor was during a July 4th picnic - it was July 4, 1962, one month to the day before... We could see Marilyn's pool and the red tiled roof through the canopy of trees when we stood on our friend's back porch. I was just 11 years old but every detail is seared in my memory. Our friend's home was a similar 2 BR white stucco, red tile roofed Spanish hacienda. I've been a Marilyn fan since I can remember. I finally got to visit her grave 2 years ago with my daughter who lives in San Luis Obispo. We spent a day in West Hollywood on our "Doors" odyssey and visited Marilyn's grave and former home before I took off from LAX. We were at the cemetery for about an hour but I could have stayed there all day. Beautiful cemetery with SO MANY famous people there - Truman Capote, Fanny Brice ("Funny Girl"), Mel Torme, Dean Martin, Arman Hammer, Don Knotts, Merv Griffin, Farrah Fawcett, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Eva Gabor. Many died tragic, too young deaths - Natalie Wood, Dorothy Stratton (Star 80), Heather O'Rorke. I left Marilyn a kiss of course. I was overwhelmed to stand in front of Marilyn's tomb. Similar to how I felt when I stood in front of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre. There's only one - right? An incredibly moving experience. My eyes were welling with tears. I kept thinking of that line from the song, "Vincent" that says: "The world was never meant for one as beautiful as you." Marilyn was one of a kind - incandescent, immortal. There will never be another like her - EVER.
