Mental Illnesses are real biological illnesses just like any other illness. They happen to affect complex behaviors. It is only in the last 30 or so years that we've really started to grasp the true biological nature of these illnesses. These are not character flaws - they are biological illnesses that CAN be treated. There is hope.

Just reading your comment now Helen. You are never alone. There are so many of us who struggle for mental wellness. Mental illness doesn't discriminate, it doesn't care if you are famous, rich or poor, etc. It affects all of us one way or another. Perhaps we may not have issues but invariably someone we love may and it does impact our lives. The saving grace in my life is learning DBT skills created by Marsha Linehan. She was a self harmer who had to be in an institution for several years until she discovered the truths that lead her out of her harmful behavior. It has literally saved my life several times over. We are in this together.

It seems like only a small portion of the society properly understands mental illness. Some consider them a character weakness, think that there's something terribly wrong with them, or even make fun of the patients. That's why I don't tell people about my conditions (I even regretted telling my parents). In order to protect myself, I don't tell people about my anxieties and slight depression. However, I really want to talk to people about it. It's hard carrying it all on myself and pretending that I'm okay when I'm not. I hope more people can understand mental illnesses, and thank you for making this video.

Thank you for making these videos. People absolutely don't understand that having a mental disorder is a setback in life, but not a stop sign. People near and dear to me have suffered from mental disorders and seeing them conquer the challenges of life ON TOP OF depression, bipolar, and alcoholism is inspiring. The same goes for these celebrities.

I'm bipolar with suicidal tendencies. For more then 50 years I've struggled to get the right regiment of medication. I have been shunned by family and friends that feel it isn't a real illness and I'm just looking for attention. We need to get people to understand it is an illness that can be controlled by medication not will power. God bless all that suffer and have lost the battle.

Nancy, I'm Lisa, the lady who created this video. I'm a huge believer in natural remedies for mental illness. High doses of the right vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs - will probably help you tremendously. Don't rely on MDs and NPs to know about natural remedies. MDs and NPs have tunnel vision - they only know about Rx meds. And Big PHarma doesn't talk about natural remedies - because they can't make millions/ billions of $$ off of natural occurring ANYTHING. You might want to start researching natural remedies on your own.
@nancydeering449510 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Unfortunately natural meds didn't work for me. It does however help keep my pharmaceutical meds at a lower dose. Keeping man made products to a minimum always helps. Two of my children were diagnosed with AdHd, I kept them off ritalin and such by changing their diets as natural as possible and reducing the junk in their diets. Thanks again.

I hear you. I do have other serious health issues and they claim i like going to the doctor and taking pills. Lol but my doctor is always on me about coming in to see him. It's a joke. I give up on them understanding. I guess when i die they'll think I'm pretending for the attention. Now that would be one hell of a show. I'd but tickets for it. Lol.

my wife was bi/polar, it was rough on us both, at one time I thought we would both be better off dead it got so bad, but I never gave up on her till the day she died, cancer took her in 2006 she was not allways bi/polar, she had depression on and off for most of her life, what I noticed over the years, her anti depressant medication stopped working, so the doctor would try another one, then that would eventually stop working, she was on at least 5 of the same anti depressant tablets over the years, she would eventually go back to one of the tablets that had stopped working, and it would work again in her case I believe all the different medications she took upset the chemical balance in her brain eventually, and that had a result of making her bi/polar, now I cant prove this, but that's what happened, the bi/polar came later after years of being medicated with different drugs, don't get me wrong, I am not blaming anyone, because these medications kept our lives on an even keel, but to much interference with the chemicals in the brain I believe could and probably does lead to those chemicals not working in the way they should, and that could lead to bi/polar , maybe not for everyone, but I believe that's what happened to my wife, as I say not blaming anyone, would be interesting if the medical people made a study of this after all, if you take an alcoholic drink, what the alcohol does is release chemicals that give you that happy feeling, but what happens to an alcoholic is his brain cells die off at an alarming rate and he becomes like a punch drunk boxer, he forgets what he is saying in the middle of a sentence, I have witnessed this, in fact my cousin has severe short term memory loss because of his drinking, I said to him one day, where is that £5 you owe me, he said, they've all tried that one, so it has its funny side, he does not drink anymore, his wife sends him for shopping with a note, I met him going for a tin of paint, he said, its ok I have a note, and he showed it to me, it said one tin of red paint for the garden gate I have had to go onto anti depressents myself at times in the past, but I made up my mind, 3 months maximum, came off them and I was fine, lots of people are just kept on them forever, I suppose the doctors think, its working so leave well alone, I decided this was not going to happen to me, as I kind of realised that its not allways the sensible course to take, look at the past, mothers little helpers ( vallium ) people spend years addicted to them and could not come off them, they where meant to be used short term for emotional troubles , but its to easy to write a prescription , doctors are busy people, so that's just the way it was then, today its much better regulated, and that's a good thing don't worry, be happy x

I feel most mental illness is caused by other people; what they think of you in all aspects, how you talk, walk, look like. We worry about all those things in our personal and work life at all ages and I believe the illness' start in school as early as preschool. I have always concerned myself with what other thought of me and I tell myself it doesn't matter, but all in all it does; it had gotten so bad that at one time I was taking anti-anxiety medicine just to go to work and when I finished the prescription I said screw this I'm taking medicine because of other people, no I have to be stronger; it is hard but I am maintaining. People have screwed with me my whole life, made me feel like I didn't belong, hell I right now feel like I don't belong here, but I am not going to do anything that makes me disappear; I think it pisses some people off that I am here. So I am just going to piss people off. But, I do limit myself as to the amount of people I am around. I am alone in most of my life, but I'm not lonely and I feel safer and in a drama free zone. I guess I'm trying to say that it's hard to be strong, especially in today's world to be an individual and deal with the crap in this world and telling yourself it's going to get better doesn't help, because the world is not getting better; overall it's getting worse as each day passes and I think I'm dealing with it by becoming numb. I take care of myself and my responsibilities, but I could care less about how someone else feels. I see a car wreck and I'm like ok, hope it wasn't someone I know and go on about my business. People at work say "how are you" as a form to start a conversation and I say ok, but never ask how they are I just go on about my business. I guess this is the downside of becoming numb, but I feel the world has gotten to the point where I have stopped caring about it, because all the crap is beyond repair or control. Well enough, I just wonder if anyone else can relate.

I know one thing is for sure if you suffer from depression and you learn to be self aware so you can recognise when it has taken control with practice you can learn to carry on and work through it on till it looses grip. If you suffer from Depression even if its for a short term you can learn not to take on too much in life and slow things down so as your mind can rest and recuperate. I know it doesn't always work and depression will sometimes just get the better of you and you will loose. But self awareness is a the key. Its really all about becoming self aware so as you know what your feeling and what to do. It does help you get through life and you can pass what you learn onto others.

The Zazz school of psychology states that the human psyche becomes disoriented by serious or traumatic events in life, just as somebody who falls from a high place becomes physically injured. The psychological injury is similar to the physiologic, in that it may in fact cause an impediment to normal function later in life. The limp due to a broken knee, or the tendency to avoid strange persons, are both possible results from physical or psychologic events. People who seek council or medical solutions are some times able to improve their dilemma.

People must understand the difference between a great amount of sadness and depression. A depressed person does not look sad and may not even cry much. Some are very angry and don't enjoy anything they do, and most depressed people also experience some anxiety and panic attacks from time to time. If you are a child growing up, it's possible that you are just sad or attention seeking, but as an adult, if you have this it's more serious. I know it, because I am there. Take care, everyone.

Other than missing Info this is a pretty good video. There were more than one persons who are alcoholics/drug addicts not mentioned. And missing bpd info as well. Good job though
