Nice to see engineer stand/point of design inside of most office spaces. In the US most units also have FCU with newer FD motors available in most applications.

At around 1:37: This fresh air is directed into the back side, the inlet, of the fan coil unit but this branch isn’t usually directly connected to the unit, there is a gap between the two. There is a reason for that, which we’ll look at later. So why isn't it connected then?

from 9:27 - 9: 57 you shared a schematic where the AHU is connected to several FCUs.If the AHU is already conditioning the air why do i need to again condition it with separate FCUs for each room?

Perhaps south side of building is in sun, north side is in shade. The rooms have different heating and cooling requirements.

What is the difference b/w FCU, Fan Powered Terminal Units, and FVAV units? I am familiar with the FCU, but I haven't been able to find much information on the others. Your videos are really helpful, and I appreciate the time you take to make them. The graphics are great for a visual learner like myself. Thank you!

VAVs (variable air volume) always remain on and will adjust the air flow to the demand. This allows for pretty good dehumidification and fresh air supply at low fan speeds. Fan coils usually act the same as a central system turning on and off when the thermostat calls for it. Terminal units specialize in supplying fresh air and quite often don't have components to cool or heat the air at all. Sometimes they will have integrated heat (hydronic or electric) to keep the air warm enough to not freeze in the ducts.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a FCU over a VAV system? Can an air handler have VAVs and FCUs together hooked up to it? If so, why would you use one instead of the other? I'm new to this industry and I've learned so much from your videos. Thanks
@EngineeringMindset7 жыл бұрын
It's worth covering in a video, ill add it to the list
@J_G_G_R5 жыл бұрын
- The advantage of a FCU system is that you need much less space for the duct work and AHU's. - The advantage of a VAV system is that its easier to design a silent system especially if the units need to be installed in the occupied space, also less components = less maintenance. - Yes technically you can combine VAV boxes and FCU's in one system but you will need to use CAV/VAV dampers for zones that require a minimum fresh air flow to keep the system balanced (You will rarely see this though). - You need to consider all the advantages and disadvantages for the specific building when designing a system, one is not better than the other.

What happens when you only need cooling? Is there a two way valve shutting off the hot water supply and vice Cerda if you need heating?
@willcurry69642 жыл бұрын
Very good explanation !. Thanks, I undestand much more now in my condo unit. High rise building Bulkheads tend to have a lot of dust inside the bulkheads as a result of fresh air from the main duct into the bulkhead space. It is unclear why my unit has this air pushed into this very large false ceiling void in my condo unit and why it is not directly placed in front of my Heating/cooling coil or connected to it. My 10 Year old highrise has lots of dust buildup inside the false ceiling void. Clearly as you say, it is to have some air mixture from the unit rooms into the ceiling grate and mix with the fresh air. Not a very good engineering design if you ask me. Maybe the false ceiling should be smaller or maybe the Fan source should have appropriate filters to manage the dust and hopefully would resolve this. thanks again

Superb video. Thank you! One question, can you explain why the inlet air to the FCU has a "open gap" instead of traveling inside ductwork the entire way?
@TheLionwarrior874 жыл бұрын
I have a question about the positioning of the Belimo or other 3 way actuators being used. The units that I handle all have these actuators installed on the return piping, what I am trying to understand is in the case where the units are being called to cool a space, there is still heated water flowing through the coil while the unit is trying to cool the air supplied into the space. Shouldn't the heating coil be isolated to allow the cooling process to be faster or is this some secret efficiency method that I am not understanding?
