The difference between veins and arteries is not in whether or not it's oxygenated, but rather if it's coming to or from the heart. Veins can be oxygenated or deoxygenated. Same with arteries. Also, the umbilical vein carries oxygenated blood from the placenta to the fetus, while the umbilical artery carries deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta.

Megan is actually wrong, MOST veins don't carry oxygenated blood while MOST arteries carry oxygenated blood; however it is not the case for the pulmonary veins and arteries. It's taught in anatomy & physiology course. The more accurate definitions for veins and arteries are the direction of blood flow instead of the kind of blood they carry.

Arteries and Veins aren't named for what oxygen level of blood they carry, but rather the direction they carry it. Veins are always to the heart and Arteries are always to the rest of the body.

Filip Bahunek capillaries are the bridges between arterioles and venules and is where most exchange between blood and interstitial fluid occurs. They aren’t part of your veins or arteries. They are the bridge between them.

Veins DO carry oxygenated blood, they just have a lower amount of oxygen than the arteries. A standard saturated venous oxygenation will be in the range of 60-80%.

Although veins (excluding the pulmonary veins) are regarded as carrying deoxygenated blood, there is still oxygen bound to the haemoglobin in the blood in the veins. Thus, it is still possible for veins to supply tissues with oxygen although it is extremely unlikely as the oxygen is unlikely to unbind from the haemoglobin to be able to access the necessary tissues as well as it being difficult for oxygen to diffuse across the veins as apposed to the ease of diffusion at capillaries. So basically, it is technically possible for veins to provide some form of oxygenation although it is highly improbable. Sorry for the long rant, it just annoyed me that nobody mentioned that veins still do have some oxygen in them

Veins do carry oxygenated blood actually. Venous blood normally has a PO2 of around 40mmHg. That's technically still oxygenated. So Conan was right after all! :D Though he did say, the vein carries blood TO his brain. That's just plain wrong, but let's just ignore that bit...cos after all, it's just a SHOW!

Arteries in general carries oxygenated blood after it has been pumped from the heart, that means they carry blood away from the heart to the tissues, EXCEPT pulmonary arteries, which carries blood to the lungs for oxygenation. Veins usually carries deoxygenated blood to the heart, BUT ONLY pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood. If Conan didn't left out the word ''pulmonary'' he would've been correct. At the same time I think he's not wrong for just saying ''vein''.

She is technically correct apart from the fact that the pulmonary Vein does carry oxygenated blood from the lungs back towards the left ventricle of the heart, however the vessel that Jennifer was highlighting I believe was the maxillary artery (someone correct me if I'm wrong), the one that runs down the side of the right eye, an artery that has connections to both the eye and the superficial temporal artery, one of the main ones that supplies your brain with oxygen, so technically they were both wrong, Conan for calling it a vein (if it was intact the vessel I think it is), and that lady (forgot her name) for saying that veins don't carry oxygenated blood.
