It's funny... I cried laughing when I saw it when it aired, but I still find I have the same reaction. So many shows have such canned jokes, but here are guys reacting in real time to something ridiculous, and it's somehow ten times funnier than a lot of stuff people put a lot of effort into.

I thought I was the only one who laughed my ass off at this. The more sideways a sketch is, the funnier Dave gets. I got the impression the writers may have had some difficulty pulling decent stuff together, then just threw it on his desk anyways knowing Dave (and Paul) would make it gold. This would have been a dud in the hands of someone that's not naturally funny.

@@csaunderson - It depends on which version of the MLA was in vogue the last time you were in school. I prefer the period outside the quotes, it only makes sense and the MLA editors will return to the correct usage again sooner or later.

I remember a bit with "sideburn tape" (basically a roll of hairy scotch tape that you could tear off into pieces to yourself sideburns or a 'stache). Dave put some on his upper lip and commented how much he looked like Buddy Ebsen. They put up a pic next to him and the resemblance was uncanny.

There was one during the 90s where he looked like Dave back when he started the show. A while later he showed it again and underneath it said David Letterman 1978. I wish I could find that again.

Sometime around 1989, Dave showed a photo someone sent in of a guy at their workplace who they thought looked like him. It got big laughs because the resemblance was uncanny, mostly due to the gap in his teeth and hair that looked like the Gulf of Mexico. Just ask Don to check his database. It would make a hilarious addendum to this great bit!

Yeah, there was a University of Wisconsin chem prof that really did look like Dave. At an extension campus in Wausau. I didn’t have him, but often saw him. I want to say Borger, or something like that. It was uncanny.
