I made a fancy feast burner without a wick some time back.. It works just fine .. used it yesterday and it's not as 'thirsty' as my other regular fancy feast burners.

I make my _"Fancy Fest"_ without the cloth wick - carbon felt and similar is expensive and difficult to find in my _"corner of the world"_ and I don't like use cotton/linen cloth wick (although they work well) because with time they became impregnated with the water contained in the Ethanol we use (methanol is 5 times more expensive here). In the place of the cloth wick I put a "sandwich" made with beverage can aluminum sheets: one flat sheet + another sheet with vertical grooves (LittleBitWorks/Tetkoba's DIY capillarity stove techniques) + another flat sheet. This "sandwich" fit between the two cans used (not aluminum, here the cats eat Fancy Feast from plastic sachet) with pressure sufficient for hold the two cans together - can put the stove upside down that cans hold in place. The "sandwich" create the capillarity necessary for vaporize the alcohol. Work well and as bonus made easy recover some alcohol that remain after use. ;)

I used a small candle container for making small candles. I rolled up 13" of carbon felt and pit it in in a spiral fashion. If it shrinks I still have plenty in it for wicking. All I need now is a pot stand and some kind of wind screen.

A wick does add a little safety in case you knock the stove over. I use fiber glass insulation for wicks pushed down intothe gap with a popsicle stick.

I was impressed by the quality of the flame pattern. It seem like this would make fast work out of boiling water. I had to wonder if you could start the stove from the side, with a small bit of wicking material in the gap, that would burn long enough to get the stove started, thus avoiding any fuel waste.

Please try the same test with a coddle bottle where the vent holes are at the level of the top of the outer can. You should be able to light both sides at the same time. Well, probably, anyway. PS. Please try a stove using hurricane lamp wicks.

What if you use a rippled aluminum can as the wick, as used in Tetkoba's Capillary Hoop Stove, which will help with the capillary action? Might have to use several layers of those. Would you be able to light from the side that way? The advantage is it wouldn't deteriorate like carbon felt.

i just bored slots around the open end of a can and that works great. they act as both the air intake and exhaust. i've been looking around to find out why people even use wicks and dont just light the alcohol directly. the only reason i can think is that it might help with spillage and a wick is easier to blow out.

Hiram, appreciate your videos. I have been using a cat food can stove, that's just an open can, with holes like on your super cat mod. I use ethanol from the paint department. I don't have a wick or a pot stand can in the middle. Does the stand and wick make it more fuel efficient? I am not so concerned with boil time as I am with burning less alcohol each time, so I can carry less. Thanks in advance.

Make a fancy feast stove with very small fuel ports on the bottom Im talking just nick it,then your efficiency should go up but BTU may drop a little. With super cat like you have make sure your pot has a tight seal between pot and can,also can try making one with slightly smaller holes :)

Have you ever tried masonry wick rope for a fancy feast. I have and it seems to work fine. It's about 1/4 inch in diameter. Crams well in the tomato paste/ f feast.

Without a wick this works alot like a Trangia stove. You have to light the vapor and air that mix in the center and warm up the stove before it starts to volatilize the fuel and generate the Bloom. But with the wick the Fuel mixes with air as the fuel is drawn up with the wick and it makes it easier to start, especially when its cold. Sometimes people use an extra wick to light their trangia for this reason.

i have found that gelled alcohol fondue burners are cheap and work great. $7 for a 2 pack and each one burns for about 90 minutes. you should try one out sometime.

I'd used these before too 😊 in between using my fancy feast alcohol stove. I actually found the alcohol stove to be more convenient and cost efficient as well, seemed to cook up better as u can control the heat high & low w/measuring fuel burn. I loved using the gel ones in between however, because in conjunction it made the experience of needing to cook/heat efficient altogether (like save on fuel). I just wouldn't want to rely solely on the gels, tho; once you've gone thru them that's it. Seems like having a pak of gels plus an alcohol stove as a kit for your trip is a decent idea if you can🙂👍

Steel wool work fine as wick, and don't burn, just the top player became black. But the best put soda can strips with vertical grooves between the cans, reduce the gap and improve the capillary action.

Hey, Hiram, does the fancy feast stove work better with the pot sitting directly on the tomato paste can? In other words, if you used a pot stand that kept the pot an inch or so above the stove does it decrease the performance of the fancy feast? Thanks

Hiram.. .could you tighten this up (clean up rough edges, etc), then do a basic burn and boil test using it? I'm curious about it, just to see how it will perform vs. the carbon felt stove. My thought are that it may bring water to a boil sooner, but not last as long. Thanks for the video.

+Alan Williams I have not seen a boil test yet on this one, so in a day or so I plan to do one myself as I have a Bud Blue Bottle handy, and I will let you know the results when I do, as far as being away from the pot by a small amount, I just completed that test today, with the Fancy Feast away from the pot using a stove stand, it boiled in 6:45 and last just under 12 mins total, with the pot on it, it boiled in 8 and lasted to 14:20 so a faster boil with it just under 1 inch from the pot, I will do more tests with it 1 inch and over 1 inch to see what if any differences that may make. hope this helps some, also using the Simmer ring I saw from another video and person, using the top of a FF can with holes in it, it did not boil at all, but burned out in 45 minutes.

Is there any useful significance to using this stove without a wick? I'd like to see a comparison of burn time and cooking time for a pint of water, with the same amount of fuel in each test. I'm pretty sure you need 2 metal cans. If you use a plastic inner can, it would melt.

Depends on wick material capillary, but most material will not vaporize alcohol more fast than just the little gap between the two cans. Include can reduce this gap placing in between soda can strips with vertical grooves.

Hiram have you ever used the Moda Flame Bio-Ethanol ventless fireplace fuel in your stoves? I use it in my DIY Fancy Feast stove I made from watching your videos and it works well. Going to try it in my Trangia Spirit burner next. The woman I talked to on the phone said it was about 94% Ethanol, less than 1% Bitterant, 5% Isopropyl alcohol and

CAS stoves work best when there is very little space between the layers. Place one or maybe two strips 1 1/2 inch wide cut from soda cans, and the capillary space will be reduced, improving the capillary action. Should make the stove bloom even faster, and may effect longevity of the burn
