Fancy Feet Rollerblading. This video will help you to understand and learn 3 turns on your inline skates. I demonstrate all six different 3 turns and then breakdown Skate Moves X to further understand how these moves can be applied to your skating.
Skate Moves is a video series by Colin Brattey featuring the skating of Colin, Leon Basin and Stuart Brattey. The video series chronicles Colin, Leon and Stu experimenting and creating new “skate moves” on the Natural Rocker Wizard.
The most recent edition of Skate Moves is Skate Moves X featuring Leon and Colin at Sunset beach in Vancouver BC. I set out to learn some of the “skate moves” demonstrated in the video.
Before we get in the specific moves, I first want to try and conceptualize the idea of Wizard Skating. The Wizard skate was designed for skaters of all skill level skating around the city. A by-product of the big wheel natural rocker was the ability to do unique skate maneuvers on flatland. Combining slalom, slides and figure skating into a free form artistic style.
When I watch Leon, Colin and Stu perform these “skate moves” the movements look like magic. I am left thinking “WOW, that looked really cool but I have NO idea what just happened.” With time and some insight from my Skate Instructor, Trish Alexander, I have learned how to understand these “skate moves”.
Anytime I am breaking down a skate movement I apply the four fundamentals taught to me by Trish Alexander. Balance, Rotation, Edging and Weight Transfer. 3 turns are a transition from forward to backward or backward to forward and a weight transfer from one edge to the other edge.
The six 3 turns are -
1:20 One foot forward to back, inside edge to outside edge
1:36 One foot forward to back, outside edge to inside edge
1:51 One foot back to forward, inside edge to outside edge
1:57 One foot back to forward, outside edge to inside edge
2:07 Two feet forward to back, corresponding edge to corresponding edge
2:21 Two feet back to forward, corresponding edge to corresponding edge AKA Gazelle
The crown jewel of Wizard Skating is the “Gazelle”. Gazelle is the street name given to the two feet back to forward, corresponding edge to corresponding edge 3 turn. The gazelle was invented by Colin Brattey and then taught to me by Leon Basin. When we first were learning and experimenting with the gazelle we had no idea that the gazelle is actually a three turn. 3 turns are fundament in figure skating. However the gazelle differs from a traditional three turn because of the rhythm.

Thats amazing! Your passion and drive will help improve your skills quickly. When I am learning a new technique I only let myself try it three times. If I do not get it then I take a step back. For example, if I am working on a Gazelle and I don't get the desired result after three attempts, I will go back to doing some simple slaloming to get back in the flow. After getting my flow back I will then try the Gazelle again.

Finally! A tutorial that explains 3's on inlines done well. I have performed some of the movements (w/o knowing what they were) by a lot of experimenting like you mentioned. However, I have always felt they were jerky b/c I would "hop" rather than the deep leaning that you demonstrated here and prove they can look ultra-smooth. I will continue to work on these... thanks for sharing! Inlines and ice skating (w/ wireless headphones) are the best therapy - it's amazing what you will discover when you learn to lose yourself in the process.

Great video. do you actually lift up the foot or does it just turn on the ground? Learning this on ice atm, but also have rockered seba skates that id like to try it on too. On ice you just spin on the blade to turn,.....

1) Gliding one foot - weight on 3rd wheel when gliding forward; weight on 2nd wheel when gliding backwards. 2) Gliding on one foot around a circle. Practise inside edge and outside edge; forward and backwards. Body weight in on 3rd wheel going forward and 2nd backward. 3) Slaloming on one foot. Forward and backward. Again...weight on 3rd wheel forward and 2nd wheel backwards. 4) Now you are ready for the three turn. Start gliding on one foot around a circle. The three turn happens when "push" into the circle by compressing and "pull" out of the circle by decompressing.

Do you use rockered skates for 1 foot 3-turns? I have 3x110 setup and I can do some gazelle like thing but this 1 foot 3-turn just doesn't work for me. I can do them on ice but on wheels they just don't work. I like your skating style, you're doing a great job! Greetings from Hungary!

I need to do a updated Wizard skate video. I do have this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnfGiqmAf5t9o7c which goes through my complete set up. The Wizards are amazing skates. I have many other high end set ups, Trix 90, igors, fr1, GM fusions, Mission D3 Inhaler...nothing comes close to the Wizard for city skating. The new Wizard NR100 Complete has a new Seba SX boot that fits a little different than previous models. Leon Basin can help us with fitting if you are interested.

How much does something like your Wizard frames affect doing the 3-turn? Can you still do it with a flat configuration?

Yes you can. However 3 turns are easier on a slight rocker. The natural rocker that is built into the Wizard frame is similar to the natural wear of your wheels. Try rotating your wheels 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 and 4 to 4. This will create a natural rocker.

Nice video! Those were some sweet moves. Can't wait to try them out- I use 84/85a wheels and I feel like I'm too sticky to the ground to be able to swivel forwards to back, any tips?

The "sticky" feel is likely a result of your weight being slightly off in your feet. The number on correction is to try with your head up. Too often we want to look down at our feet when we are learning something new. The weight transfer on a front to back transition is heel to toe. If there is too much weight in your toes then the swivel will feel very sticky.

What's the difference between the natural rocker wizard frames compared to rockering using wheels? I'm using 76-80-80-76. Is there any advantage when using a prerockered frame?

The NR Wizard has 2 differences. The natural rocker is much smaller than a traditional rocker. On your 76-80 you have a 2mm rocker over a distance of 80mm. On the NR100 the rocker is 1mm over 100mm. The NR Wizard is a UFS frame with a slight tilt forward. This creates a pivot point on the third wheel.

Thanks. I didn't know that they are UFS. I'd really like a rockered frame for normal 165 mount but with less rocker. Cause as you said 2mm feels a bit too much for me. When fast this setup starts to wobble.

We have considered making Wizard frames for the normal mount. Right now we feel like the UFS is the best suited for the skating experience we are trying to create.

That's sick. I've got a much better feel on the ice for tricky edge transitions, I personally find it easier. I don't quite have the money zone feel for the road surface, and that drag/tackiness of the wheels. You guys are slick though man, that's tough on that surface.

It's a bit weird going from one surface to another, but after a few sessions, you'll be all over it dude. It's a A LOT more forgiving than pavement when you bail too haha!

Yes, the wheels are slightly rockered. The Wizard frame is built with a very unique natural rocker that is great for this type of skating.

In the video my wheels are 84a. My favourite durometer is 82a. I really like soft wheels for the smooth and cushy feel.

Hey Nigel. You are right. Try on rotating your wheels one to one, two to two, three to three, four to four. Your wheels will wear into a natural rocker similar to the wizard frames.

Personally I don't rotate my wheels. I like the feel of the worn wheels. However, if you want to maximize the wheel life you can rotate the wheels in the usual 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 pattern. Another good rotation pattern that will keep the nice feel of worn wheels but still help with the lifespan of the wheels is 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3, 4 to 4. Simply switching the wheels from one skate to the other and keeping them in the same position.

That is easy for me to do 3's on ice skates because frame base is low. But on inline skates with 4x80 setup it is much harder to turn.

It depends on what you get used to. I have Powerslide w trinity base 3x100 and I can handle it however I rocker the wheels. Still needs lots of practice!!

I do occasionally get dizzy from spinning too much in the same direction. If I feel dizzy then I do a quick spin the opposite direction.

3 turns look way better and feel way better with the Wizards. You can do 3 turns on any set up. I have a pair of Mission D3 Inhalers and they are great for 3 turns. However, when you do 3 turns on Wizards, the rhythm is different. The Wizard frames are expensive for us to make. The frames are made in the Seattle Washington out of 7000 grade aluminum. Costs are: 1 - Materials (There is a lot of aluminium in each frame) 2 - Machine time (CNC machining, plus we upgraded the cutting bits for the second run) 3 - Man hours (Skilled labour is expensive) 4 - Finishing costs (Anodizing, wheels, bearings, axles) As we continue to refine the manufacturing process we will be able to make them less expensive. We do not want there to be huge barriers for people to enjoy the frames and right now the cost is a huge barrier. We will continue to work hard at lowering the price but right now they cost what they cost.

Hmm, still not totally convinced by all this mushroom bizniss! Some moves look kinda cool, but then I see others and think "laaame!" I like this 3-turn stuff though. I want to try to learn them so I can use them to transition between grinds or airs. Not knocking any of this stuff for difficulty though. Looks very skillful.
