I got standing room for a Saturday matinee for a Jerome Robbins program at the San Francisco Ballet when I was a student at the school and a nice woman gave me tickets to watch it from the front row. One of my best memories from my time there.

I stumbled upon this...I knew Joseph barely when he joined NYCB...he was a pure, kind and driven soul whose dancing, as this shows, had so much flow and genuine presence, and that rare combination of softness and strength. Breaks my heart to think of him but I am so grateful to have found this telescope into what was. The Five Remembrances.

And I never met him but he walked past me up the stairs to a party I was leaving and he spoke to someone beside me and we all laughed as he kept going up-- he was so obviously a sweet person as well as funny. Otherwise why would I remember it? Well I suppose I asked who that was, and then he died soon after. So I've thought of him all these years. It seems unbelievable that it could have been so bad that he just couldn't bear it, that he couldn't see through it. You can see how a person makes a mistake in their thinking when they're thinking about what's important about themselves.

I saw Joseph Duell perform this solo before his suicide in 1986.
