My favorite part of Dan and Roth's reviews is there isn't a letter grade or "5 out of 5 stars". They simply recommend it or they don't, and explain why. These two are among my favorite film critics because they aren't trying to dumb it down and aren't afraid to explain the complexity of a film. Thank you! Keep up the good work.

Cynthia Erivo is PHENOMINAL and she's starring as Harriet Tubman in "Harriet" directed by Kassi Lemmons (director of the first episode of "Luke Cage" ) and screen written by Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard (director of "Remember the Titans" and "Ali"). Very high hopes for that one.

I'm actually happy that his character was quite interesting and that he didn't half assed his way through it with his features. He felt a bit fanservicey but the talent was there to back it up so yeah it's cool

Just watched this movie with a friend thinking it was going to be a straight forward suspenseful, murder mystery but it was amazing! Very complex and full of tension. Please make a spoiler review because I didn’t understand some concepts or under lying morals/ allegories! Thanks for what you guys do?

I watched the film last night and really REALLY loved it. The acting was great and the whole way the film is done with going from each person's perspectives reminded me of something that Tarantino would do. Please everyone who see this comment if you have the chance go see this film asap. It seemed to me to be a much more independent kind of production and it is an original idea. So if you want to see more original films go see Bad Times at the El Royale!! 5/5 10/10 A+++

SPOILER WARNING: The ending was a slight letdown for me Mostly Because the feds never showed up/ Jon hams storyline was left underdeveloped in the end. The subtle way they hinted about the videotape was very nice though. Also the final gunfight was silly and the result undeserved in my opinion.

The Hateful Eight, Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag are just some along this line. It's cinematically pretty beautiful, with to twists and turns of a good dramatic yarn being unraveled. I feel I've seen this plotline done before more or less, but the spin on this one was satisfying and pleasing. On top on that the writers knew the importance of a iconic character such as Jeff Bridges. They didn't cross the line and do him dirty. You just don't murder "The Dude". Ever! In anything! The Dude Abides!

This movie was fantastic. It really is a divisive movie though. I think it suffers a bit from the uncanny valley where it comes so close to being amazing that people have a harsher review for not quite meeting amazing. Still very close to amazing.

Thank you. I agree with your review. I got to see a screening of this movie a few weeks ago, and i am in near total agreement with your review. Since it was an advanced screening i do not know if we had the exact same ending, as they were "undecided" on that part. I am looking forward to taking a few friend who have an appriciation for this type of movie and to them i have already mentioned that the trailer gives a set up, but that i can't really explain what it is about without giving stuff away. So i am just going to share with them your review.

How good is Cynthia Erivo? In a Tony's dominated by Hamilton, she won Leading Actress in a Musical. Hers was the only major actor (in a musical) category that did not go to Hamilton. She stemmed the tide and bucked the trend; hers was a performance too great to be eclipsed by even the greatest musical ever writ. I am so glad she is getting recognized in another medium!

Correct -- Cynthia Erivo IS amazing!!! Having witnessed her spectacular performance in the broadway revival of The Color Purple, this is setting her up for tremendous success with a film career (and so close to an EGOT!). It helps she is tremendously humble, grateful, and kind -- you want to root for her in anything she does.

Pros: acting, cinematography Cons: multiple flat spots that killed the momentum, overall felt contrived that all these 60's caricatures come together at the same time. Overall: a flawed film different enough to appeal to many, especially those who don't want the full Tarantino effect

Dan is never going to answer, but I am really curious what this movie has to offer upon a second watch. I mean, all the questions were answered. You said it yourself; there are no twist. So, what would make this movie better upon a second watch? Hereditary I understand, because that movie sais one thing and does another, but this movie is pretty straight forward.

This is from the director and screenwriter of _Cabin in the Woods._ Anyone who knows that film and is going into the cinema expecting this to be a straight forward crime/murder mystery is an idiot. Of course, general audiences don't watch/appreciate quality (see the box office figures for Ouija and The Nun, versus It Follows or You're Next, etc), nor take any notice of the writer or director of a movie, so... yeah. A lot of people will probably hate this movie.
