The working features this R2 has are awesome and that along with the size of it makes it totally worth it IMO. The head looks really nice but I think the body could look a lot better with some nice paint work. All the silver areas could be done with real looking aluminum that more matches the dome and the blue could be done in the correct anodized blue look. Add a slight amount of weathering and it could look more close to the real one. Still, as is it's not bad looking at all.

Yeah he's definitely the most functional R2 I've ever owned. The blue arms, lightsaber and holographic projector especially. You're totally right about the paint. The silver and blue areas in particular. I'm still glad I got him and the results are really excellent!

I just completed My fan home R2-D2 and, I agree that the quality is exceptional. I feel the same that part of me feels like it's worth the cost cuz I love R2-D2, but the other part of me is I must be insane to pay that much. One issue I found was that the wheels are too slippery and most of my house is carpeting, so what I did is I bought 1/2 inch wide grip tape, which the surface is like sandpaper and the other side is adhesive. I stuck it to the wheels and now it'll drive on anything. Whereas, before he wouldn't turn or anything because the wheels were too slippery.

Congratulations on finishing your R2! Yeah I wish he was able to drive on carpet as well. That's a great idea using the tape!

I am on issue 95 so coming to an end and yes World of Wayne is brilliant. The batteries I used are old salvaged laptop batteries however these have a flat end, I simply filed down the plus end used some flux and soldered a lump of solder on the end, they work perfectly so I saved loads of money by doing this and not buying new.

I am almost finished building this kit. I decided not to start the build until I had a good collection of the stages. I fully agree it would be great to be able to have the whole kit in one order. Agora Models did this with the Terminator T800 half size kit (in the UK). It is frustrating that some of the stages are pretty pointless, as you say, a five minute task. The most frustrating part of the build I have found so far is the metal plates that fit inside the metal dome with double sided tape. When I tried to fit the sub-frame of the dome to the metal dome, there is very little area to hold onto that does not have a plate behind it. My fingers kept popping the plates out as I tried to align the two large parts together to ensure the light sabre port would open. Even when I had everything aligned, the lightsabre door kept jamming shut. Fortunately the 'My Mate Vince' channel had had an video where he fixed the lightsabre port with, of all things, two staples glued to the underside of the hinge to add a slither of height to the hinge. Worked perfect. Still, I am enjoying the build - although I do not use the magazines. I follow Wayne from the World of Wayne as he builds the model. He is a Jedi Master at part builds.
@outsider238
@outsider238 6 ай бұрын
I have to agree. The metal plates for the head could have been done better. Like you, I had to constantly watch myself to not push in the panels as well. I do think this R2-D2 is fantastic but the build process really takes away from the experience and the overall cost is way more than it should be.

If you are a new subscriber to this build, Fanhome is now including the 1st binder (free) and the rest at a charge over the course of the build. I think that there are a total of 5 binders. Now if you have been building this kit for a while now and didn't get the option of getting binders when you subscribed, Fanhome is working at offering these binders at a cost to those builders. Currently, this offer is not active yet.
@outsider238

That's good to know. Too bad they weren't offered when they started this kit as it's too late now. I really wish they would have condensed the magazines as most people really only care about the instructions in them and having 100 magazines when you're finished is a bit much.

I think some of these kits are available at a faster cadence. I'd add at least a bit of weathering. Don't go overboard and make him look like he just floated out of a Dagaba swamp though. Just a little something to add contrast. I consider the weathering step to be one of my favorite when I'm model building. But, to each their own, or however that goes. 😀 Nice work by the way. 👍

I spent two years and two months just saving the boxes and packs until I had all the complete kit, I also had the opportunity to purchase the extra parts that were specially made as replacements I still have to put him together though and I'm waiting to get some electronics to add to the inside of the opening panels in the front. If I don't put it together I could always sell it to someone who wants the full kit but they'll have to pay the shipping on 10 boxes that are condensed down. I would really love to keep him as he's my favorite droid, but I hate the fact that he doesn't have the ability to retract his third leg. I have two of the sphero 1/6th scale remote control r2’s on is R2 and the other is the black Imperial droid. They have great light up features and sounds and his third leg retracts and he can do this little wobble and then scream and fall over its really funny. He also can sit with you while you watch the movies and he interacts with what's going on in the film, he does things in patrol mode where he does what he likes or you can control him you can also program him to do certain things. I have two other 1/6 the scale r2’s from hot toys and sideshow that have light and sound and one of them has every single little arm and extension part that he uses throughout the films he's really amazing with his whole Arsenal displayed at once. Well your r2 looks great, did you have a problem with a gap between his dome and his body that needed to be readjusted that's one of the problems the early builders remarked about. I think I'm going to lightly weather mine not too filthy but just a little worn I also have a restraining bolt that was 3d printed to use on him. I wish they would make a 3P0 to go with him that would be awesome well happy building and thanks for sharing

that is so awesome. I like the audio features. With me being visually impaired, audio works well. I use a lot of technology throughout my day-to-day life, including a desktop PC equipped with a screen reader called jaws for windows, also known as Jeff W. I also use an Apple iPhone, that comes equipped with a built-in screen reader called voiceover. You don't have to pay extra for VoiceOver. It's built literally right into the phone. I'm totally blind. I was born blind from birth. I have an eye condition that is indicative of premature birth called retinopathy of prematurity, or ROP. When I was born, I weighed 1 lbs. 6 oz. When I tell people my story, they say I am a Miracle. I am a bit of a Star Wars nut, but I don't think I would be able to build one of these kits without sighted help. I have some Star Wars figures that have audio, and they are really cool. One of my most prized possessions is a talking Luke skywalker XWing pilot. I got him as a Christmas present in 2020 from a really good friend of mine.

Very interesting video. I speak as a professional maker of armour. I make armour in any scale, but years ago I made a series that I called 'The Boy Prince' armours. Essentially historically accurate fully-articulated steel armour small enough for a child. Given the relatively large size I went mad with the detail but to my surprise, NOBODY wanted them? It turns out that quite simply they were too large to stand on a desk and too small to stand in a hallway, it was as simple as that. Which in my opinion is the same issue here. Every 12 year old should have one. Here's an idea: Build a 1:1 scale base model with some functionality. The head bowl from 22 or 24 guage stainless steal. ( Thinner if it can maintain bowl strength without creasing. ) Inner frame plastic & aluminum. Outer shell, tin. Every componant can be upgraded by a buyer. ( including framework & outer surfaces. ) Market the base model 400 u.s. dollars each. Smartphone App controller 20 u.s. dollars When buyer wants to upgrade, he/ she may do so at their liessure by ordering direct ftom company. Company only raises prices to adjust to material costs both higher & lower. Only greed & selfishness destroys it for everybody.

@@outsider238 agreed, its a profitable venture provided the company owners are not greedy & don't make STUPID business decissions. We live in s get rich quick, seriously flawed world. Dial it back people! Set reasonable goals for the company. No more turning accountants loose on assembly, packaging, & shipping worlers. Just a good pace to keep parts & assembly flowing. Own every builder. Nobody gets more profit than their product is worth, minus sharing. If an owner truly desires too make kids & star wars fans happy this is a win for everybody. But greedy & selfishness always kills it for everybody. As a child I wanted this cool orange bicycle with a long white seat & tall handlebars. My mom hated it, so I got a sturdy & durable Huffey instead. Her choice was smarter & better. A nieghbor kid got the bright orange bike. I was able to cope, as my bike outlasted the test of time & my wieght back then. Yet, had there existed greed & selfishness durimg the 80s like there exists today, I'd never gotten a bike & likely died of a heart attack before now. These entry level R2-D2s are cute & cool, but GOOD GOSH! I can buy myself an outdoor get off my couch fun item for that price!! And chiks are drawn to outdoors active guys. Clue in. Dig chiks. Be active. I never had access to a lake. So I fished off river banks, canoed, camped. All much cheaper & just as fun. Untill jerks stole my tackle box containing my dad's handmade lures & my 12 inch cub scout pocket knife. :( Hills & valleyes all around us folks. Meet us at middle ground. You know we desire it. We know you desire to build it. Yet for those whom seek only too profit from the experience, I'd rather go fishing for catfish on a creek bank. Stop making it all about profit & fame! Star Trek didn't get successful by dwelling on who invented every componant, gizmo, & who had it 1st. I Don't Care!!!! Just make me a laser pistol so I can shoot a coin too watch it melt. To enjoy the experience. I want too fly an X-wing that can lift 400 lbs & still do combat rolls in mid air. We are so far behind the curb. I'm getting too old to care. The Enterprise D is an absolute horrible kit. The panels don't fit right, there's light leaks all over the thing including through the black windows, between the panels and all over the neck section. The lights are the most over engineered disaster I've ever seen and the whole thing is battery powered with somewhere around 16 batteries. Check out my "I Quit Building The Enterprise D" video. I show all the issues with it. It ends up being over $2.000 and it'll take you at least 2 and a half years to build it. I highly don't recommend that kit at all.

I would have to honestly say no. Now that I"ve built it and had it for a while, it's not worth $1,600. If a company made this as a complete "toy", it would probably be around $500 to $600. The reason they get away with charging so much is because you're paying for it in very long increments so people don't really realize just how much these kits cost.

Yeah they didn't have the binders for this round of the R2 kit so you have to buy your own. I really don't like all the magazines. It's a huge waste. The Enterprise had one magazine per 4 stages. This had a magazine for every stage and you end up with a super heavy space wasting mass of paper. I liked this R2-D2 but you end up spending way too much for it by the end which I'm pretty sure all of these Partwork kits end up being the same way. Because you're paying incrementally, most people don't realize how much they're actually paying and it ends up being a ripoff.

Just watched the review and I agree on all your points! It has some big pro's and cons so in the end you have to decide yourself if it's worth or not, it's all about personal preferences! Also I think the magazines with all the inside star wars information and pictures + the real life science info is atleast worth 200 dollars, maybe more. Which makes the costs for the model a bit lower. Would be nice if they offer this as a full kit!

Finished mine a few months ago - not worth 2 years. The remote function works - but the AI part is a joke. My vacuum cleaner has more sense than R2. The description led me to think it was at least as smart as Vector robot by Anki - but no. He explores for a minute then stops, and seems to gets stuck everywhere. So now he sits in my office in a corner. A $1200 static model. I had higher hopes of him at least staying awake a bit longer than a few minutes.
