The scene is so well done; Viserys is so horrified at the prospect of marrying that little girl that he can barely bring himself to smile at her, which he does because Laena is his cousin and he doesn't want to be rude to her. I think it was this 'date' which pushed Viserys to decide to marry Alicent; Alicent is very young as well, but she looks physically mature, and she's forged a relationship with Viserys, he's comfortable with her and believes her to be kind. Also, if they marry, no one will be pushing little girls at him. (and Rhaenyra's escapade reminded Viserys that he could have lost both his daughter/heir and his brother in one day and that maybe he needs some more children as back-ups to the royal succession)

It’s not about the Princess not agreeing. The King stated a course of action. His heir cannot be seen to disagree. They must always be seen standing together. Had she spoken of that in private, he could have changed his mind without question or reproach. Instead by speaking as she did she prevented that course from being taken less the royal house look divided and weak. Which it is. Edit: daemon wasn’t bluffing. It wasn’t talk. He has a Line. No matter his personal feelings about his brother and niece, he will never harm them. He’d burn down the world to protect them. Even when he doesn’t like them all that much. If the King had come himself, Daemon would have taken the scolding like the naughty little brother he is. Viserys might have even annulled marriage to Lady Royce since they have no children hell they never even fucked (because 1 she prefers eating taco to sausage, and 2 they both openly distain each other). Viserys should do that anyway and let Daemon marry Rhaenyra as her King Consort. Fun fact, the King or Queen Consort has all the same authority’s as the Hand of the Crown, but actually sits above the Hand. The Consort is the ultimate authority in the absence of the Crown, as it is assumed the Consort is aware of the Crown’s wishes and intent. Of course that assumes people act within their Station. A savvy Hand can always subvert the will of even the crown.

There were kings of England who married little girls; but the unions were not consummated until the girls were old enough to safely have children (Isabelle of France and the future Edward II, for example). The sad exception to this was the marriage of the young heiress Margaret Beaufort at 12 to the adult Edmund Tudor (Henry VI's half-brother); she was a pregnant widow at 13 and nearly died in childbirth with the future Henry VII and was unable to have any more children despite having a good marriage with her second husband. Viserys should have married little Laena, but waited until she was 15 or 16 to marry her (long betrothal) and had her kept at Driftmark so he wouldn't see her grow up, it would be better for the marriage if she came to the marriage bed looking less like a little girl (and 15 is still very young, but if Laena is a bouncy 12 or 13-year-old running around the Red Keep, it will be harder for Viserys to eventually respond to her on an intimate level).. In the book, Viserys is much younger than he is in the TV series, only 11 years older than Alicent (she is older than in the TV series), and is about 30 when he marries her).
