As the FT prices went up and availability became an issue, I went to the XTB and MMC offerings. Considering I already have a complete Menasor from XTB, and FT has yet to show that their teams will ever combine, I feel good about where my collection is going, with or without FT.

​@@kup98ss49 Yeah, XTB and MMC have been filling in gaps in collection pieces with arguably better alternatives. Saltus and Neptune come to mind (and their upcoming version of Perceptor). XTB's Menasor is pretty amazing looking even though I didn't like the accessory pack nonsense.

I have the XTB Menasor combiner as well, and given how it ended up I wish XTB had taken more time to build a sturdier frame for the combined mode. Sometimes simply being "done" isn't good enough, especially for a ~$600 set and when the "combiner parts" cost $200 by themselves.

FT was simply too slow with all these reissues. They needed to do all these in 2018 and 2019 when the demand was unprecedented for MP scaled stuff. Even last year everything was flying off the shelf. Either people feel burned for selling their soul for an aftermarket purchase or almost everyone that wanted them already has them or simply lost interest. Most PO are still selling out, but only for new characters.. Almost all the etailers have had stock for months and that hasn't happened in a few years. Great analogy with the cars!

I'm a few bots away from finishing my S1/2/Movie line up and I went from excited with each addition to sighing in frustration and relief whenever I can nab a preorder. I've started collecting in 2015 with Combiner wars, then dropped hasbro for KO MPs shortly after, and 3P MPs around the middle of 2019 so I'm a new collector, but I'm already burnt out. Sure I'll have a pretty kick ass robot display case, but getting here was more than I bargained for.

I think FT had a soft monopoly on the high end toon accurate figures for a while simply because other people weren't doing them, at least not as well. XTB has issues, but they are stepping up in that market and making up for lost time with the explosion of toon accurate figures they've been coming out with. FT still has a reputation for quality with only a few hiccups, so they still have that advantage. But I think more people are going to migrate from FT to XTB due to the pricing and the greater competition. Whether or not FT can sustain their higher prices from the shrinking customer base of whales remains to be seen. There is an upper limit to price/worth where you will just lose interest from a lot of people.

Well said. I agree. I love Fans Toys stuff and just completed my Dibot collection with their reissues. These toys are amazing! I justified the price hike weighing the aftermarket prices and the fact the Dibot are so big but the increased prices across the board are an issue. It does cause me to be more selective in what I buy across the board. I am willing to pay for quality if that means missing out on many lower priced toys to get one high priced toy.

I actually have a strong relationship with both owners of the chosen prime and toy dojo. The US retailers actually make less per figure by a large margin in comparison to Asian retailers. With increased shipping, freight and import fees that US retailers pay that China does not. For example Fanstoys Soar was $200 at Showz and $300 at Toy dojo. After air freight and import fees Toy dojo paid nearly $200 per figure plus is paying for free shipping to all their customers. TCP same thing. Bbts to combat the rising costs of doing business has just about everything shipped ocean freighted. Smaller retailers like the chosen prime and toy dojo can’t do that because people would stop using them. They have to be competitive with Asian sellers.

I don’t think it’s one or the other. I also think that FansToys is doing larger runs. At least, that’s what the retailers I’ve spoken to have said. The way that it was explained to me was that Western retailers want a drastic markup over local prices. So, FansToys does what they can to require that Chinese retailers either sell to Westerners at Western prices or that they do not buy up extra, local stock at reduced rates and then sell them at the premium prices in America and Europe. There was a rumor that ShowZ ran afoul of them for doing this exact thing and it’s why they don’t have the same instant, bulk preorders which they typically did.

Happy Thanksgiving Mike! I've adjusted how much I'm supposed to spend buying MP figures specifically FansToys but I still can't pay $300 for one single figure unless a combiner or a titan size. Is the quality there? Most of the time but not always bc the figure isn't perfect, so why the price increases? (ei. Outrider, Blitzwing). In the end they can charge whatever they want but it's up to up to put them on check.

Fanstoys is going for the perception that most expensive = the best. While this works on some people, it doesn't for most. I apply a price/proformance ratio. If something is 40% to 60% less money but is 90% of the value then that is the best figure imo. For instance, XTB's toy stunticons. Great paint, top notch alt modes and very good bots. And at half the cost of the FT versions. Omega was a great example. The DX9 is 95% as good as the FT but at way less money. If someone is a snobby if you don't have FT then your collection is crap kind of person then I ain't going to hang with them or interact with them online. What is the best is what fits the collecting style. Mine is always bang for buck.

I coughed up $415 for Acoustic Wave with also the coming cassettes to go with him! The only other Fans Toys I own are Reflector(Spotter) and Brawn(Hunk), otherwise it seems Im happy with xtrans, MMC, Badcube and hasbro toys. BBTs hasn’t delivered on my New Age constructions yet. It’s all expensive, even the hasbro stuff by the time you do some add on kits. I feel like studio series grimlock is great, as are many recent hasbro offerings, that as you say you can be played with because the toys have some durability... stuff I can let my son play with.

I love their Soundwave. I couldn't be happier. Most toon-accurate to date and doesn't feel cheap. I had him on pre-order for like 3+ years and was not disappointed. That said, I agree that Fans Toys price points overall, makes it difficult to collect their products in general. I think their recent products are fantastic but my budget forces me to pick and choose.

I would humbly suggest SS HotRod and ER Cyclonus are two examples where Hasbro/Takara have done well enough with a mainline toy that it's far less compelling to invest in the cost of the third-party figures if you're OK with the CHUG scale.

Howdy Mike. Always enjoy your videos. IDK, FT has for the longest time seemed overpriced to me. They are hunting "whales" and are pricing themselves out of the market IMO. I could afford them, if I so choose, but I don't like being taken advantage of. Generally, they have the best product, but I don't feel that they are twice as good as all other 3rd party companies. XTransbots, Zeta, DX9, and others all have solid offerings that look good on my shelf. To your analogy of the cars, what is the difference between a Lamborghini and a tricked-out Toyota if they are both sitting in the garage on display? I think the real answer is not much. Hi Mike! Great topic discussion. What is challenging for me is I wait to see the end product: QC, look appeal, from the reviews. By then they are either sold out or extremely higher in price. Some instances they are not the preferred look I was going for. Nothing wrong with them but rather a difference in style for me. One example is I seem to prefer the DX9 Carry over the FT Hoodlum. For the price offered, there needs to be high quality control on a product.

I somewhat agree with what you're saying but in regards to MMC, I think their Combaticons and now their First Aid and their tapes are Lamborghinis. They look great, feel great, have very cool transformations, premium plastics and metal where needed and good paint apps where they use it. Overall I am very happy with how they look on my shelf. I also think X-Transbots delivers some knockouts in their line that compete with the big dogs. It would say they're more like Porsche than a Corvette. Still overall I hear where you're coming from... I am anxious to see if FansToys will continue with their high prices if they can't deliver on pose ability, price, transformation and the areas they already deliver on because their competition is doing it better and better daily.

I got into Masterpiece Transformers back with Hasbro MP-01 Optimus. Bought him on clearance for like $30. Same with Starscream, Skywarp, etc... It is obvious in the pictures that they have premium materials and a solid design aesthetic team. However, I typically like a combo of those things and articulation. Butterfly’s, ab- crunches, both wrist tilts and rotation, etc…. The things that can capture natural and relaxed poses. Not just A frame and dynamic spread-legged shooting poses.

i been a xtb collector for quite a while and i have a boatload of FT but I started when FT wasn't as premium as it is today and I didn't need all the reissue stuff like the insecticons or the dinobots cuz I was already collecting third parties back then and didn't have to pre order any of it either. Now I choose more XTB than FT cuz they are catching up to FT really fast but I always like their figures. they weren't as strong as FT in the past but these days there's the option of choice and XTB is more toon accurate on many of their bots so I been going that way and their menasor was good better in hand than online photos. the only thing about XTB is they need to work on their transformation. Some are just a nightmare to transform. Can't wait for their defensor. and by the way you can't transform the mainline fives times a day. their joints couldn't hold up. their hollow parts would fall apart. that's just wishful thinking hahaha

Good Comparison, Great Vid Nothing wrong with a 'Vette. They are World Beaters that make the Imports, such as Ferrari & Lamborghini, shake and quake. Sure they are NOT as flashy, but get Excellent Fuel Mileage, and can hang with their much more expensive competitors and can stand the test of time. The one you Neglected to mention is Takara Tomy, Hasbro, a good comparison for them, would be BMW. High End, High Price & NOT RELIABLE as far as the Quality is concerned, not to mention they get outdated quickly. People constantly mistake them for Prestige, when they are more like Belly Buttons these days, everyone's got one. One thing Fans Toys & Takara Tomy, Hasbro have in Common, is the PRICE GOUGING of their Product. Competition is always Good for the Consumer, and XTB seems to have stepped up their game. If they can keep the Price Point down to a Reasonable Price, they will do very well for themselves.

Perhaps Fans Toys not only wants to be top tier, but hoped some other companies like XTB would raise their prices as well. If other companies followed suit then the expectation of how much these figures cost to buy would become normalized. But instead I believe they shot too high and the others didn’t quite play along with Fans Toys ploy.

So Mike I have a question why would you want to support a company 1. Like you said they wanted everyone then want to be exclusive kind of a slap to the early collectors who helped build the brand. 2. If you are trying to drive the market up on purpose, why would you give money to a company who would do that? Or a company the clearly was scalping then had to drop it's price with questionable practices? And they will continue with this practice because fans continue to support this behavior I quit buying because it isn't right. This includes XTB. I understand materials go up and if you had to pay for licenses like authorized 3rd party companies yes I would understand those 250.00 and up prices. The biggest expense for a company making license properties is the licensing. But these companies do not pay for any type of licenses. It maybe why Fans Toys hangouts around the season 3 & 4 characters. If they made Tracks then GM/ Chevy would break them. That may explain a lot to be honest.

this is market saturation. Re-releasing their products was the worse thing they could have done because like you said there arent enough collectors to support he price. (most collectors are getting the first run with newer collectors getting rereleases but how many newer collectors are there).

I like the build quality of fanstoys, but I really dislike the finish(chrome, metallic paint). They also tend to do strange design choices, like the exposed diecast joints on soundwave or weird dots on snarl's dino spines. I like my stuff to have all the same aesthetic, which is why I stick with takara 90% of the time

They have to be careful though that they dont outprice themselves from their customer base though. Hence the biggest reason I went with BadCube's Insecticons over Fans Toys. For half the price, I got what I wanted for the most part. The BC's version is perfectly good for what I wanted. I feel a lot of people are going to feel the same. Same goes for Perceptor. I initially had FT's Tesla on pre-order, then XTB came out with Jansen. I weighed the price and the content and came up with XTB for not only the price but all the swag that comes with it. Now Im looking at Gabriel versus Terminus. I'd rather have Terminus, but Gabriel's price point is much better for what will be a wall clinger for me. But since they dropped Terminus' price Im leaning back toward Fans Toys again.

And not to mention, I will NEVER pay 80+ for a mini figure, i.e. Brawn, Gears, and Warpath. If I can get an acceptable one from Bad Cube or XTB for less, I will always go for the less. Will that make me a lesser collector? I dont think so. Yeah sure FT has more metal in them, but is it really worth it?

I quit MP scale and went to Legends. Quality of legends is up and number of characters are awesome. And I can finally feet them in.

I think fans toys has taken a big dip this year. And for why. You can go to any online store and find more fans toys figures for sale and not sold out then ever before. Every store still has pre orders up for most of their figures. It used to be if you didn’t pre order in the first half hour you couldn’t get it. Now they do t really sell out. Either their too expensive or they just aren’t as good as they used to be. In my opinion they were never that great in the first place.

I have 2 $350 robots both are bandai Voltrons. For favorite characters it's always worth it, but I'd rather buy a super nice statue than spend more to fill out a collection.

As someone who likes cool robots but has zero nostalgia for the cartoon, the way these figures look turns me off entirely. Comparing their new Soundwave to MP-13, the brighter colors and flat textures makes it look like a cheap toy you’d give to a kid, rather than a $250 collector’s item. And yeah, I get that slavish screen accuracy is the entire appeal for some people, but if you don’t care about that then they just straight up don’t look good.

Hmmm, I think that the serious collectors are going to want the best representation of the figures they buy no matter whether they like the toon look or the real world look and that will be what they decide to buy no matter the cost, now if that happens to be fans toys great but if not then they’re cool with that too. But then again you have ppl who have made the decision to only have fans toys on their shelves and have a lot of empty space on their shelves because of they only want fans toys…in most cases fans toys is the superior product, so I understand either way, me I’m the later, however I do really like fans toys…🌍🤔🌞🔑

I don't feel Fanstoys' offerings are worth the asking price these days. The last one I got was Thomas from ShowZ and that was at a higher price than when it came out. I have the DX9 Chigurh and it's a decent fill-in for Astrotrain but Thomas represents the character a lot better than that one so I pulled the trigger on getting Thomas. Going forward, I'm glad X-Transbots is offering their own version of Perceptor at a much lower price than Tesla 2.0. It looks great and I hope it doesn't suffer any QC issues like Locke. I don't see myself getting Fanstoys' versions of Hoist and Trailbreaker as they don't seem to be a whole lot better than the ones by X-Transbots and Ocular Max.

There are great options for almost every character at nearly half the price and you can build a great display with those options. At the end of the day it is up the the individual if the extra price is worth it for a slight improvement

I know this video is about FT but am I missing something? Takara’s prices are just the same. They raised their prices on all their MP’s starting with what I think was a very overpriced MP-44 with questionable quality. At the end of the day don’t think for one second that all the companies really care about us, they are looking at making money. Get what you want and what makes you happy.

False scarcity of demand. Ultimately don’t let Fanstoys dictate to you what the prices are. They are attempting the Bandai false scarcity technique. Pretend it to be rare by releasing a pretend limited run which are being scalped by people who have absolutely no interest in Fanstoys but as an investment! When you see someone bitching over a dent in Fanstoys group, that guy is no 3p collector, he is in it just for the money, the toy has no regard. I love Fanstoys but when they threw out the reissued insecticons at ridiculously high price, I gave up. Being there’s discussion about their combiners, it felt they winged it rather than thought it out and I am glad I am not in it. They are trying to dictate high prices now to the investors who want to buy and resell at 40% marked up. I am so over it that I just went back buying Takara.
