Im a DJ and in techno and other forms of dance music a good warm up DJ is key to start your night, set the tone and ease people in but now no one has the attention span to enjoy an opening set of ambient or downtempo music which was a big part of DJ culture. I have a funny Rick Beato anecdotal story. So back in the late 90s he was in a band called Billionaire. They sounded like a harder version of Janes addiction....nothing special or original but sort of like your run of the mill rock band...they sounded professional enough but nothing to write home about. So sometime in the late 90s im in high school and I went to see Megadeth play and the opener comes on and it's Billionaire who myself or anyone in the crowd has heard of. Usually when a band the size of Megadeth plays the opener will have some kind of following or maybe fit in with the audience but these dudes were all alone. So these guys(Billionaire) with bell bottoms and Les Pauls start playing mediocre harder rock/alternative music in front of a Megadeth crowd....and its in Philly no less and if you know anything about Philly sports crowds you'll know they are some of the harshest in sports. Well that attitude carries over into the music scene for Metal as well there and let me tell you Billionaire got annihilated by the crowd to the point of either Rick or the other guitar player threw his Les Paul to the ground and at one point almost threw it at the crowd. Its funny as I don't remember many opening acts from that long ago but this incident always stuck with me and little did I know decades later I would see one of the dudes from the band be super nice guy on a popular internet platform.

I think some of us around the age of 30 are in that sweet spot where we enjoy music like a few decades ago, meaning, listening to an album like watching a movie, to get to know the characters, reading a bit about them, and enjoying the whole experience like we used to when we bought CDs. But then, also being able to access a vast library of music for a really affordable price. I'm sure some younger people will get that experience from their parents or older brothers or something. I hope the next generations don't let the idea of the album die, which is kind of happening in some genres already. Maybe I'm completely wrong and whatever comes after "the album" is even better and cooler; right now it seems like the playlist is challenging that concept, ever changing playlists curated by the platforms themselves to keep them fresh. I think that's cool too, but it doesn't replace the album, it's a different thing.

I think the ready access to any type of music from any genre of period also puts a lot of responsibility on the listener to curate their own tastes, which is great but also causes a lot of anxiety. In other words, choice overload, as well as sensory overload due to short form online content and video games.

Are there good catchy tracks out there that aren't complicated? Sure. But for people like us (I have similar taste to Rick) there isn't much meat on the bones to a lot of modern music. Not much to chew on. There's definitely innovative modern music out there and Rick speaks highly of those musicians (,Tim Henson, Tosin, Plini, Cory Wong)

@@elcastro5000 I am a musician and I am passionate about music I also have a similar taste to Rick as a lover of all types of rock music. I am very passionate about innovation in all aspects of music, not that I don't like complex things believe me I do especially as a songwriter and in producing so we don't differ that much. Maybe you have to look to find something you personally like which is fine but there's so many good songs being made and admittedly not all of them are on the charts. Once I looked for them that rabbit hole of good modern music kept coming to my attention and it was a "Pop Awakening" per say. Sorry if I'm slightly incoherent writing this (I just got home from a surgery on my shoulder) my point is I don't think that things being simple takes away from my enjoyment of complex things and vise versa. One of the best things about music for me is how people can use the same chords for thousands of years and write so many different but equally great songs. 34:10 so glad I’m on the same page with both of them with metal production. When I first started mixing, I remember looking up tutorials and literally everyone was using amp sims, fake drums, too much compression, shitty bass tones, etc. the last band I was in didn’t even want me recording my actual drums (despite me owning all the equipment needed) cuz they said they could just program them…And now look, every metal band these days has that same over produced, glossy, fake sound to it. Like yea maybe that style of production worked for with all the shitty 2010 metalcore bands but for the love of god can we please move passed it already.
@sleepyheadbeats43522 жыл бұрын
I’ve been trying to explain this to people for years. It got so bad that the indie band I played in didn’t want to record actual drums because our producer played in metal bands and he could “just program them” Our own drummer was cool with it and I was like wtf?! We are a raw shitty indie band, we don’t want to sound anything close to robotic or over compressed. That’s just the trickle down from years and years of people having to overproduce metal, I can’t imagine how fake the production side of it is now. It’s so dumb.

One thing that is nice about the shorter cultural attention span we have is that things don't get overplayed like they used to. I used to think I hated mainstream pop music but it turns out I had just heard most of it way too many times. Now, things may get overplayed, but it's for a matter of weeks, not months.

On the question of why people lose interest in contemporary music from their 30s onwards, I am 35 and struggling with this personally right now. My theory is that it's a mix of the obvious things like: less time available to listen to music which means less exposure to new music trends which makes it HARDER to develop that taste and appreciate that music. But for me, one of my biggest issues right now is listening to music performed by people who seem very young compared to me and respecting these young artists the way I respected artists who were older than me when I was young, or contemporaries of mine. I find it hard to take heavy lyrics seriously from an 18 year old, and I can't fail to recognise the numerous young female Sheryl Crow impersonators practically regurgitating pop/folk songs from the late 1990s. I feel like the change in my perspective, caused by age, is a huge obstacle for me now. I really want to get past it but it's tough.

18:34 As a 20 year old, I'm the only person that really wants to just sit down and listen to albums in my friend group. I don't have many musician friends. A lot of people I know who picked up guitar put it down pretty quickly. I recently heard the term "listening party" and I was surprised other people did that. Most of my friends think it's weird to sit down and listen to an album and they also find it weird that I have 0 interest in video games. But idk, I can be weird. I barely watch t.v. or movies, I'm a book and music nerd. But apparently I'm not the only one. I feel that pain of being an album listener in a world of gamer normies that, for the most part, don't really care about music.

yes. I have to constantly train my Spotify algorithm and remind it that i want new music and a variety of genre. it does well for a while. I have found great new music and even new genres from spotify suggestions, but i myself have to find new types of music every now again for it to continue to be expansive. If you don't, it has a tendency to think you want to hear the same thing or the same type of thing. I actually love the game of training my algorithm, and i feel like its a very modern phenomena of music searching and listening, training your algorithm so it plays a good random selection. lol

I love Rick and pretty much watch every video he makes. But there is a section of his audience that is insufferable... i.e the "back in my day" types who think that anything released after 1978 is not "real music" and cannot shut up about it

Movies used to be six to eight hours long in the silent era. Nowadays, people barely have the attention span to sit through a four hour movie. We're really going to hell here. And a live recital of a homeric epic? Forget it!
@bhumikakhatri26212 жыл бұрын
um people are more inclined toward watching 10 seasons of an intense show in 5 days so I don't think it's the attention span that's the problem.

I get that I'm yelling into the void, but people who say the Beatles played mainly three-chord songs in the early days don't know what the fuck they are talking about because only half that shit at the most is like that. Like how people say they can play Let It Be because it is only four chords, but they don't know how to play the walk down or the organ break. There are subtle nuances like walks and outros - not to mention eight chords - in the title track of Please Please Me alone. I am always impressed with the chord arrangements on Hard Day's Night, my favorite record of theirs (tied with The White Album).

One of the things that makes it hard to find new bands for me being a Gen Xer is artists are able to do the DIY thing and releasing singles and EP route. I am looking at full album release lists going to Spotify or KZbin trying them out and buying vinyl, digital, or CD. This like was mentioned kills the algorithm for me. My last Spotify year in review the top song had one play and was a track from the last album I played. When I discover 'new' bands many been slaving away for years and taking the time to get their song perfect. Now that touring is opening back up some of these bands are looking for labels and releasing a physical product. Like you guys mentioned hopefully the label doesn't ruin them.

I think the older generation deserves a voice when it comes to voicing concern about the health of music, movies, etc. Often passionate people like Rick Beato and Martin Scorsese just get disregarded as boomers and that's that.

Two somewhat guitar centric bands I wish Beato would give some attention to that I feel fall under a Fantano umbrella are Deerhoof and Dirty Projectors. I realize these two are no longer brand new groups by any means, but the harmonic content in albums like Bitte Orca and Offend Maggie would be ripe for a Beato style analysis.
