Magnifique film, mettant en valeur tout le travail de recherche, + le travail physique pour élaborer toujours de nouvelles planches, toutes plus belles et uniques les unes que les autres. Bravo ❤

George Greenough nailed this 55 years ago and he could really surf.

Wonderful video. I’ve been surfing flexspoons off and on since the late 1960’s, although I have been enjoying riding Greenough inspired surf mats in the last few years. It’s nice to see the younger generation continuing the tradition. I also really appreciate your personal kneeriding style, sitting back on your heels, instead of kneeling up awkwardly like so many kneeboarders seem to these days. Merci.

I used to kneeboard in the 60s and 70s. I rode a foam spoon that I got from Greek Surfboards in Huntington Beach. It was pre-shaped, out of a mold, and I glassed it myself. I made the fin by laying up fiberglass in a shoe box. Back in the day glass spoons were criticized for not having enough float but on a gnarly day at Newport Beach they reigned supreme. You could take off super late and and it felt so serene in the tube where a foam spoon felt twitchy.

The early spoons were amazing, but it's probably worthwhile for you to follow his evolution into carbon composites and chined edges.

now you realise how radical George Greenough was to us in the 60's

I first rode a home-made and fairly crude spoon at Velzyland in about 1970. The fin was too small (my fault), the flotation was lacking and I soon gave it up. The center of buoyancy on a spoon is too far forward so they push water when paddling ('scuse me, you can't paddle them, only fin kick) and again b/c the nose has the only flotation, they are hard to get into a wave. There are several reasons why modern surfboards have the wide point back from center, and narrower noses. As for the undoubted abilities of George G to ride these, they need a long walled up point break similar to his home grounds - Santa Barbara, I was told. GG had his time, and time has moved on. The particular benefits of spoons for certain, and kneeboards generally, have been long ago eclipsed by modern shortboards. Moves that were once the singular province of kneeboards have become commonplace on modern shortboards, which offer better paddling, flotation, wave entry and most of all allow the strongest muscles on the body (legs) to add elasticity, flex and torque to turns. Kneeboarders don't have the flex in their torso that a surfer's legs will allow. Back when I started kneeboarding in December 1970, other surfers were amazed that I could surf into a closeout and with a single turn, punch out the back. It wasn't until a few years later that world champ Sean Thompson showed that it could be done on a surfboard.

Credit to the builder - but due to the lack of mass and float they need a lot of speed to work. Despite the good conditions this one never looked like it was generating enough speed to do much and needed a lot of leverage on the rail to turn.

shoud try a plywood bellyboard, hard to get going but bloody fast when up

...My first custom ordered board was a Greenough Spoon back in '68. It was a bitch to paddle and seemed to only work well in larger, faster waves. Went to a "solid foam" after that and never looked back. I still have an original Greenough spoon in the garage.....

it looks good, but it doesn't show the clarity smood ride of a knee-boarder, notice rails are always being held....

Go see footage of George's floatation when carving up waves. Your board slugs and his shoot like rockets. Difference? Floatation. (Plus I think George is probably still leagues away even on a mat0
