I have many mixed feelings about the second movie (plot wise and lore wise bc I’m the biggest HP nerd) and the entire Johnny Depp situation but honestly? Mads Mikkelsen looks really good as Grindelwald. And I agree with you guys in that Eddie Redmane is EXCELLENT in these movies…so at this point I’m pretty much just watching it for his Newt Scamander and for Mads. I dunno, I think the movies have been terrific so far. It was originally said that the story would be split into 5 movies, describing the events from basically 39 to 45. The first two movies were used as world building / set up with their own plots to try be their own thing but ultimately they showed Grindelwalds manipulation, motivation and power and what he was willing to do to achieve his goals quite well, leaving 3 more movies to focus more on the war while the whole credence / dumbledore plotline will run parallel. That's how I've been seeing it, and maybe that's why I'm enjoying it.
@JMTgpro2 жыл бұрын
I would love if this series were divided in two, one being Newt traveling the world as an indiana jones but instead of treasures, find fantastic beast and another about Grindelwald's magical war. Because as it is, everything feels limited. I want to see how the Muggles prepare for war, I want to see if that "fear" of Grindelwald is true (On how the Muggle are advancing militarily leaving the wizards behind) or if the Voldemort theory that Muggles are always behind is true. They are two supremacists with two opposite motivations, we have never seen the Muggle perspective in these conflicts. Imagine what this series would be like if it left Newt behind and focused on that concept. If it shows us how the ministry has a police or military force to counter the wizards. How many bullets can a protego resist before breaking? Can a wizards withstand a shrapnel blast from a grenade? Apparition can deal damage to a wizard when someone grabs onto it or throws an object at the wizard (Seen with Ron and Dobby), does this imply that it is useless against muggle fire? If a dagger can hit an elf in the middle of Apparition, what would a bullet do? These questions is what I was dying to see, under the premise of a Wizard-Muggle war. Imagine if the muggle minister was also a muggle supremacist, who they consider that the wizard has always lost against them, that they always end up hiding... But no ... Let's give the lead to the Magizoologist, not to his brother, the veteran wizard of a muggle war, of course, let's give the only Muggle in history the role of comic relief and a wand... This seriously must have been two different sagas.

Fantastic Beasts should've been a one-off standalone about Redmayne's Scamander and the creatures. Then there should've just been an entirely separate trilogy about the Dumbledore vs Grindelwald war. These two storylines don't work together at all, they're tonal/thematic opposites, they should be separate stories.

Y’all see that scene where Jacob is fighting his wand? I think what happens with the wand is that he’s got all the random “this wand has not chosen this wizard” effects we saw in the sorcerers stone. It’s just randomly casting spells, but with the same randomness of hitting the skip button on a playlist that is on shuffle. Sure there’s a limited number of things it could do, but which one it’s gonna do is anybody’s guess…. Oh! It’s the Wabbajack effect!

1. Love your reactions! 2. Not an expert on any of this, just my outside opinion. Haven't even read the books, only saw the movies. 3. Not going to watch this movie after the whole Johnny Depp thing. I think it is a great opportunity for the replacement guy, but Johnny Depp was just so captivating in this role, even in just trailers alone. This guy doesn't give me the same kind of evil feelings as Johnny did. 4. I hope they address the Grindelwald change in the movie. If they address in the movie Grindelwalds' face change by saying something like "I've had to change my face to hide from the International Wizarding Police" or something, that's fine. As long as they address the change. 5. People keep saying "Johnny was only in 2 movies, so we can adjust to the change the same way we did with Dumbledore in HP" and those are 2 different changes. You honestly don't really notice the Dumbledore change in HP because they made the character look the same and they could argue he matured a little between the 2nd and 3rd movie. Here they look totally different, but like i said before, if they address the change in the movie, I think that will be enough for now. 6. I think people are upset with them not focusing on Grindelwalds' war for the first 2 movie but forget that it was the same way with Voldemort in HP. From my memory, they did the same thing where they slowly introduced him and we learned more about him gradually through each movie until Goblet of Fire and that's where things really started going down. I think they're doing the same thing in these movies so we are just gonna have to wait and see.

The core is great, compelling and interesting. But if I watch Fantastic Beasts, I want to see fantastic beasts instead of them just being mcguffins like a portkey would be. And the first one did this really well. Film 1 just set up a different thing than film 2 became. And there's so much fluff I don't need, what is there is already compelling enough. That being said, I'm sure Kowalski getting to see Hogwards like we did back in the day together with Harry, will be super delightful. However they'll explain it cause it has been pretty established that Muggles can't do magic even if they tried for a long time.

Over the last 2 weekends I've watched all the HP films at the cinema, so it's all very fresh, and the main thing for me is that I really cared about all the characters, but with the Fantastic Beasts characters, I can't even remember their names (even though I quite enjoyed the films). Also, I think the fact that the screenplay so far has been written by JK Rowling isn't in it's favour - with the original HP films, her source material was edited down to remove unnecessary detail to make the films so good... I feel with the first 2 of this series they've felt like they're overblown with excessive story, but they've now brought in Steve Kloves who wrote nearly all the HP films as co-writer. Seeing Hogwarts again though makes me want to continue with it, because that familiarity is drawing me in!
