hscphase What makes it worse is that they're still "committed" to making FF movies. I know it's unlikely, but it's best to join collab with Marvel or just sell the rights back. They focused too much on building this connecting universe and focused less on story and character development

Kevin Smith interviewed Josh Trank for like 8 hours and its broken up into four interviews. The whole time he talks about how awesome Chronicle was and how the producers and him had a fantastic relationship. I was happy to hear it bombed, it will teaach Trank to be humble and he wont ruin a Star Wars movie at least!

The rumor mill according to Collider talk is that Trank was promised 3 action set pieces, they got pulled immediately prior to filming, and Trank tried to make the best of it. The Studio hated the no action movie and then shoehorned the final battle it in. When they pulled Trank, who knows what they did and did not use of his film. If Trank gets past this, this will be his Alien3 ala David Fincher.

Vicarious Fan Good. Trank is a hack. I'm still shocked there are people who liked "Chronicle" (the found footage "superhero" movie). His original vision for F4 was apparently some kind of cronenberg style science fiction movie. I don't see that turning out any better than what we got. In fact, it probably would have been worse.
@scrammedeggs2322
@scrammedeggs2322 9 жыл бұрын
Are you kidding me? It would have been infinitely better. For one it would have been a complete movie. Secondly, it would have been a better handling of doom. He wouldn't have just come back out of nowhere. He wouldn't have just wanted to destroy the world. I think this movie could have hit 65% had they just left the script as it was.

X-Men does not belong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Ian. They don't ever make sense in context with the rest of Marvel. kingkold They don't make sense in the comics either. So because one person gets super powers because they they were mutated by radiation as an adult, people are okay with that but if you got powers from radiation passed along at birth that manifested during puberty as an allegory for homosexuality or whatever then you better watch out for your equivalent of the KKK or the government sending giant robots after you? That makes no sense existing together.

katsujinken10 It makes perfect sense. The fantastic four are all rich, famous for being amazing scientists or something else before they became metahumans. They weren't born mutated. As far as movie rights goes, Universal sort of holds distribution rights to another Hulk solo movie. What I mean by that is that if Disney/Marvel were to make, say, Planet Hulk or World War Hulk, Universal would contractually have the right to say whether or not the movie would be distributed by Universal or not. From what I can tell, Disney/Marvel would pay for the cost of production while Universal would throw money into advertisement, merchandise production, and getting the movie into theaters. Once I learned this, I did some research into why that would be such a big deal. It turns out that there are a ton of variables, but the simple answer is that both Disney and Universal would have to come to an agreement on how much each studio would share in the estimated profits of not only the theatrical release, but also stuff like the merchandise, DVD and soundtrack sales, etc.

what my theater insider people told me was that Trank used most of the money that he was given for the movie and the house that the studio gave him to just party with him and his friends. His ONLY previous other film is Chronicle which was stupid, and in no way should have given these studios so much confidence in this guy. He is only 31, they put him up in a huge mansion and gave him a bunch of money and he went nuts with it. I gotta wonder why the studio felt he was the right person, dumped so much money on him, AND were planning for him to direct one of the stand-alone Star Wars movies. Thank goodness he sabotaged himself.

I don't know about Trank's version having less action. It was leaked that the studio made him take out three major action scenes. There is evidence of this in the trailer. The part where Thing is jumping from a plane isn't in the final cut of the movie. There is also leaked behind the scenes footage of scenes involving the Fantasti-Car that aren't in the final movie.

Insiders say Fox pulled 3 massive action set-pieces right before shooting began to save money. I liked the direction it was going with the darker, scarier tone when they get their powers. Having Doom, Galactus and Silver Surfer in the MCU would be pretty cool. I think Trank outrage during the shooting was because he wanted to do 3 more scenes that involved a lot of cgi and special effects that Fox simply refused because they didn't want to put more money into the movie

André Gaspar Yeah, them involved would be nice. Although having the Skrulls and the Badoon would be really nice for Marvel to have especially for the short term. They had to scrap the Badoon from Guardians of the Galaxy and with Inhumans in the pipeline as well, having the rights to the alien races would be excellent. Plus, they could be adapted earlier than FF and maybe Doom as they haven't been tarnished by bad movies.

Mitch Awesomefoot I agree. Even if Marvel gets the FF and all that comes with it, we're most likely to see other characters from the Fox's FF "universe" than the actual FF in a movie. Unless they decide to stop making a origin movie and go straight to the action.

I agree with Pat that Marvel needs to play the villain to Fox do whatever necessary to make it practically impossible to continue on with their remaining franchises, and force them to give them back. X-Men would have been great to include in Civil War, and would have been a good addition to Infinity War, seeing as some of them did participate in the Infinity Gauntlet. Marvel clearly has a connection to their fans, getting actors that want and connect with the roles, and directors who respect the source material, while Fox has little to none of that going on.

X-Men First Class saved the X-Men movie franchise. There couldn't have been another X-Men movie without it that wasn't a total reboot if First Class wasn't made. It established a fresh new set of actors to take the helm, while salvaging what it could from the previous movies. First Class is everything the X-Men always was and needed to be...a team. Not X-Men: Wolverinefest 2000 - 2009, like it's predecessors before it. We had just enough time to get to know each member of the team and not only see their personalities, but their abilities develop as well. That's what I want to see. Not just see characters like Colossus appear only to have him say a total of 3 lines in all 3 X-Men movies. (Which is no wonder the actor didn't return for Deadpool) I'm going be the jerk now and say Days of Future Past was a step backwards. It fell into the Wolverine lovefest again, having him front and center. Yes, I know Wolverine is awesome. I know Wolverine is popular. Wolverine sells. I get that. But why not have someone new like Cable for this set piece. I mean it's perfectly setup for this character. No need for random powers sprouting up from Kitty Pryde for no damn reason whatsoever. It was the perfect time to introduce Cable due to it being set in the future and probably the only opportunity to establish him. If not Cable, then why not Bishop? He's just another character that was highjacked by Jackman for screen time. Even though Bishop IS THE TIME TRAVELER! THAT'S WHAT HE DOES AND HE CAN'T EVEN DO THAT BECAUSE OF...WOLVERINE! This movie also killed off a large number of key characters from First Class OFFSCREEN and did anyone bat an eyelash? Nope. How the did they manage to kill Azazel? They couldn't even capture Nightcrawler in the White House and he was less masterful at teleporting. How? I WANT TO SEE HOW! But NOPE! People are just saying "Whoa! Look how ripped Wolverine is! I wonder how much protein he intakes?" all over again like they've been doing since X-Men 2. Not only that, but when they introduced Quicksilver why wouldn't they want to keep a mutant around that has the most OVER POWERED abilities I have ever witnessed in X-Men? (Yes. Even more so powerful than Starefest Phoenix) We finally get to have sentinels in this movie! That's awesome, right? Who's fighting the sentinels? None of the X-Men who's capable of fighting them............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. What do people see in Days of Future Past that elevates it pass First Class? Maybe Days of Future Past is going to be the type of movie that everyone loves at first but crumbles over time. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. Time will tell. This is just my opinion. If you enjoy the movie, great! I'm glad you liked it! (Apologies to Hugh Jackman. It's difficult not to like the Jackman.)

A lot of movies are profitable before they even hit theaters, between product placement, securing streaming rights, other licensing, many times a studio doesn't care if the movie is good. If a movie bombs, but is still profitable for other reasons, that's actually (sometimes) better for the studio. I know some product placement was removed, but with streaming rights and such, they are probably still going to do ok with this film to be honest.

The best thing about them not having Fantastic Four and X-Men is we are getting focus on characters we may not have gotten before. I think it came out that Fox actually gets money on even some of the comics and merchandise sales for FF and X-Men stuff, so its no wonder they are pulling more and more FF and X-Men out of merch.

I'm excited about the prospect of Marvel getting the rights back. In the right hands it's not that hard to make a good FF movie, see The Incredibles for an example. More importantly though, getting those rights back fills in a lot of gaps in their cosmic stuff. Skrulls, Galactus, Silver Surfer, The Watcher, Ego the Living Planet. To me the most important thing they'd get back is Doctor Doom. He's probably Marvel's best villain ever -when he's done right- and works well opposite anyone. He's arched Spider-Man, he's arched Black Panther, he's arched Doctor Strange, he's fought the Avengers. Doom is just plain great. Marvel's already worked out a deal with Universal to be able to use Namor again as well, and an Inhumans project is already in the works (although they're kind of trying to make the Inhumans a replacement for the X-Men, and as much as I like the Inhumans I don't think anyone will accept that.) The only gaps that would remain in their Cosmic setting would be the Shi'ar, Imperial Guard, the Technarchy and the Brood as those are all still wrapped up with X-Men. I personally have hated all of the X-Men films, but I think with the success of Marvel Studios Fox has started to realize their blunder in making the characters look however they want instead of how they look in the comics. With Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse they're finally starting to remotely resemble the way they're supposed to look.

Now days Rotten Tomatoes is crooked as hell. every single Viacom movie we've gotten in in the last year at my store has come in with a "rotten tomatoes certified fresh" sticker on the package. Unsurprisingly Viacom owns Rotten Tomatoes... Additionally movies like Sausage Party were sitting at 99% on the site. In other words a Seth Rogan movie about a shitty sex pun stretched for an hour is on the same "level of quality" as Citizen Kane. In the last year there have been more 99s and 100s than a majority of the history of the site combined. Another great example is the new movie "Get Out" 88 percent of the users who scored the movie rated it positive... its got a 99 on the site and is listed as the #4 greatest movie of all time well above landmarks like Singing in the Rain. Apparently the critics are less critical than the average person. The movie was produced by universal studios... which is not directly owned by Viacom but is in a joint effort with them through their 50/50 ownership in UIP (United International Pictures).

The Nolan Brothers envisioned the Batman origin movies. They both wrote the script and Christopher directed it. They were given the source material and they gave their own take on it. The results were awesome. That's the reason why these origin/reboot thing on Mavel/DC took off. I love Marvel and they should take back Spider-Man and F4 'cause both Sony Pictures and Fox will just keep murdering these franchise.

You briefly mentioned the Fox stranglehold on Marvel properties, I may have missed a podcast but, have you ever discussed Sony? Those manipulative hack frauds (Red Letter Media does a fantastic (pun intended) set of videos discussing in depth how Sony is probably the most disgusting company since Viacom. It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts. Love your podcast, keep it up Ian and Pat. Fan forever

From what I understand the action set pieces were cut out due to budget reasons hence why we see things in the trailer weren't in the movie. Although I wouldn't be interested in a fantastic four movie as it is I'm gonna guess the director's version would have been better.

Marvel should have made them remove their logo from any advertisements for the movie. I guarantee you it at least did some level of damage to Marvel's box office draw for their future films.

I don't see FOX giving back the rights after this movie. Instead, I see Marvel actively going after FOX for fucking with their franchise. This F4 movie is a huge spit in their face and I don't think Marvel is going to turn the other cheek this time.

its even worse then that, at the box office it did half as much as either of the two other Fantastic Fours at the box office. This is the end of Josh Tranks film career. His last movie is going to be the worse reviewed super hero movie and a huge box office bomb. He got dropped from the Star Wars spin off, yeah he is done.

What can Fox do now? They can't make a sequel to this film because no executive would approve it after this huge loss, and they certainly cannot do another reboot in a short time frame. Their only real option is to let Marvel have the rights or to negotiate a deal.

I really like these podcasts, and I think Pat and Ian (particularly Ian, who I find to be an incredibly decent, intelligent guy) are well worth listening to, but hearing Pat say that film directors do not have the right to stay true to their vision just made my head spin. I'm not defending Trank's work on this film. That's beside the point. The point is whether the vision of a film director matters. It's the only thing that matters. And whether making a film from their own script, or a film based on a comic book, filmmakers are far more than "caretakers". That's insulting. And condescending. Why commission quality filmmakers to make superhero films at all? If vision doesn't matter, why not just keep paying hacks like Brett Ratner? Or whoever directed Affleck's "Daredevil"? We're currently, thankfully, in the midst of a Golden Age of superhero-films. For the first time ever superhero movies are consistently "good". Mostly. The best of them are amazing. I've heard multiple calls this year for "Logan" to receive multiple serious Oscar-nominations, and it might. Who directed that? A hack lacking vision? It was James Mangold. A director with a filmography stacked with great films...BECAUSE he's a director with vision. As is Bryan Singer. As is Joss Whedon. Even Kenneth Branagh. The reason good superhero films are being made these days has nothing to do with the genre. Pre-"X-Men" (2000) cinema is an endless graveyard of bad superhero films. And even after that the the high quality doesn't become consistent until "Iron Man" in 2008. Those 2 films, and best of the ones made subsequently, are good because of the DIRECTORS. When directors started giving a shit about the work, superhero films got good. There have been speedbumbs, like Trank. But regardless. A director's vision is sacrosanct. It is the only thing on a film set to never fuck with. All due respect (sincerely). When it comes to video games, Pat runs circles around me and most other people. When it comes to cinema my advice is to not speak with such authority in the future.
