I just read the Roger Stern Spider-Man omnibus and there was a note in the front basically explaining that the comics were of their time and may contain outdated cultural depictions. That's helpful context for newer readers. Same with the recent reissue of the Kraven's Last Hunt Epic Collection with a brief disclaimer warning that the story depicts suicide and encourages those in need to seek help. I'm not sure why that couldn't have been done here. I agree that these are collector's editions of older comics priced in a way that's clearly aimed at adult readers. They should be released "as-is" for the sake of posterity. A simple disclaimer upfront would have been more than sufficient.

JB gave an interview where he said he left FF because the editor allowed Claremont to change some dialogue in FF, which drove JB nuts. Soon after leaving, he was rebooting Superman for the Distinguished Competition. I've got this pre-ordered and I just finished v1. Haven't read this in over 20 years so looking forward to revisiting an old favorite!

The "dialogue" in question was the explanation of Jean Grey's return. And not the main reason. Byrne has stated that there were no one reason why he quit Fantastic Four; it was a perfect storm of different things piling up at the same time. Claremont being allowed to rewrite (and another artist redrawing) portions of Jean Grey's return storyline (as Claremont didn't want the Phoenix Force to be pure evil since inevitably he'd have to deal with Jean's resurrection), the issue of Johnny finding out a young kid burned himself alive emulating him which had to be rewritten to include the Beyonder not a nurse telling Johnny he shouldn't retire, Shooter basically telling him that Thing had to be restored to the team in time for the 25th Anniversary/She-Hulk returned to Roger Stern for the Avengers, and the fact that Shooter wasn't happy one bit that Byrne got hired to write the Superman reboot.

Again, this was an era when comics were entertaining and you looked forward to the next issue. Byrne's FF is my favourite filled by lee/kirby and the defalco/Ryan. Like secret wars, I'll be reading these for the first time in 40 years. Also FF 275 is my favourite as it captures she hulk well, and the lee/heffer character is just pure gold to me. Fingers cross we'll get byrne's avengers run reissued soon or hopefully the poll will make it happen

I'm definitely getting this and Metal this week...will have to wait for next week to get that New Republic book. Love the overviews, Omar, keep up the 'fantastic' work! 😁 I do hope the Metal omni overview will show what parts of each cove shimmer-shine and which parts don't, since all the overviews I see *mention*...they both shine, but I really can't tell what parts of the DM shimmer in the light, compared to the OG cover's nice little symbols in the circles... 😅 Still though, can't wait for that overview and to see how the story's fully collected finally [and I can sell these tpb's/hardcovers finally]😉

I'm old and stopped collecting comics in 1979, but I know who John Byrne is. I was a huge FF fan, had every issue except 1-3, couldn't afford to back collect those even back then before silver age stuff really exploded in price. But the one thing I really noticed, what really stands out to my eye, watching this video is how so many panels have no background except for a solid color. Was this always the case and I never noticed as a kid or is it just relevant to Byrne's work since he was writing *and* drawing these issues?

Correction; Claremont had no pronlem with Dazzler/Sara on Xfactor, Claremont was against Jean returning as over in the X-Men book, Scott was married to Madelyne. Scott was retired as X-man and would only return to help thecteam now and then. They had a baby even. Jean returning would screw that all up, and in my personal opinion ruined Scott. Later retcons be damned, he walked out on his newborn son. What a hero eh? Claremont got the short end of the stick there, and even though I love Jean as a character, it ruined more.

Couldn't wait for the reprint and found a copy of the original printing to go with my original printing of vol. 1... still unread for now, but I read these books in the 80s and owned the Visionaries trades after that (sold them last year). Still one of my favorite runs on any book ever. I get the censored texts in this reprint and the disclaimer is powerful.

I started collecting comics with Byrne’s Superman in 5th grade. It was a magical time. However, when I see the work Byrne did right before Superman, and after (Next Men) I feel completely jipped.

I wonder how the issues in this omni compare to the same issues that appear in the most recent FF MMW that have several overlapping issues. I have been getting the MMWs from Byrne's classic run but am thinking of just getting this instead of waiting for the remaining MMWs from that era since I was planning to drop the FF MMWs at that point.

I thought having the 2nd printing of vol. 1 I would have a mismatched spines. Glad to know all the newest printings will be mismatched. Not sure how Marvel didn't or doesn't design based on DM vs standard covers and spines matching up surprises me. Seems like even the companies that own the IPs don't have faith in their products. From a design perspective, DM and Standard should have spines that match. Kind of encourages the consumer to buy a particular version over another. Standard being the team look. So vol. 1 would have classic FF and vol.2 would have She-Hulk instead of Thing. While DM would have vol. 1 Reed & Sue, while Vol.2 would have Torch and She-Hulk/Torch and Thing. Either way helps the spine indicate that it's the same series on the shelf. The new font spine design for Silver Age hasn't bothered me, but for this Byrne FF omnis, it does. Damn I'm getting old, have to go tell some kids to get off my lawn...

Not a fan of editing stuff. Kind of sick of companies doing that. This is mild but publishers have gone to complete extremes the last couple of years. Those words were common and used and were not curse words just like at this time we decide that these are now the new racist words. Its just stupid to call the last generation racist.

I disagree. They could go the route of DC and just cancel the book entirely. Most of us can decipher what the hateful word is supposed to be. If you are focused on three pages of blacking out those words and it bothers you, you could go and hunt down those two issues.

I also have to add on here. This is like the 2nd maybe 3rd time I've seen Bryne and the N word related stuff. They say never meet your idols and starting to think that's true. N word was bad now just like was in the 1950s or over 70 years ago. Starting to seem less like a "word of the time" and more like some of these creators are just racists. This may upset ppl but frankly, defending the N word never puts you on the right side of anything. Do people really need to see an uncensored version of the N word to "enjoy" the story as collectors? Because seems they just want to see N word in their comics. Hate to break it to anyone, but Marvel should feel ashamed of ever printing the N word in any book. Regardless of the point of the story. Somehow, plenty of defenders of showing the N word as a defense against racism. You're wrong.

Censorship is never the answer to help solve a problem. It’s an easy/simple fix to hide behind, that really does nothing. What would be more helpful is if Marvel kept the Omnibus uncensored, and added a few pages in the back or front that addressed the language used. Censoring our past because we don’t like it, doesn’t help us understand it, and then build a better future.
