作刀風景の動画ってもう何本も観てるけど、またこうやって観たくなるのよね。延しや圧しの工程の相槌を打つところとか、鞴から空気が送られた火炉の色の蒼い火の色とか、あと土置きからの焼き入れを経て生まれた反りや刃文の美しさとか、本当に見どころだらけ。

刀剣好き、もしくは刀鍛冶に興味があっても刀鍛冶の門をくぐるとなると 日本人でも相当な覚悟(危険、重労働、汚れ仕事、尚且つ数年は無給)を要するのに 高い知識と技量を習得する為に外国の方が弟子入りされてあるとは、いやはや驚きました。 元パティシエ(眼鏡)の御弟子さんの元気そうなお姿も拝見できて良かったです。

うちの家系が先祖代々、刀鍛冶の職人だったから、ふと気になって見てみたら物凄く惹き込まれた。 一つ一つの工程が精錬されていて、まさに「美しい」という言葉に相応しい。 先祖の職人気質の遺伝子が脈々と引き継がれ、みんな多少なり職人気質を活かした仕事に就いたりして今に至るけど、 何となく、日本が開国やら色々してなかったら、うちもまだ刀鍛冶やってたのかなあ…とか、ちょっと切ない気持ちになったり。

Nothing is simple. Striking a match..NO..hammer a piece of iron until it glows and lights the match on it. I'm sure it has some old traditional meaning instead of using a Bic plastic lighter. :) He taps the lump of iron on the anvil to signal he's ready and also to get rid of slag flakes. The ash is to raise the carbon content in the steel, and the clay "sauce" is to contain the ash so it doesn't drizzle off. A beautiful piece of art!

Quite interesting to see a Western person as an apprentice. Must be extremely difficult to get a spot as an apprentice to a master, especially for a non-Japanese.

Being the Western apprentice, I’d say it is not easy to get a spot, but not as hard as most people think. Provided that you speak perfect Japanese of course. If you don’t, I wouldn’t recommend starting such an apprenticeship anyway!

And it's also quite expensive. The masters believe that the old traditions cannot be widely disseminated, but for the sake of money they will teach at least the devil.

Actually it's becoming more and more easy. As traditional swordcraft is dying out. So most are more then eager to try on western apprentices. There is about 300 smith's as of now. 10-15 years from now there will be roughly 30. As most will have retired. And most apprentices nowadays don't stay until completion. And there is less and less apprentices applying.
