Fantastic sounding vintage AR 9 Speakers

Refoamed AR 9. Also, replaced a bad tweeter voice coil.
DIY supertweeters on top of speaker pair.
Again, driving with Music Angel KT-88 tube amp.

Yep soon I have my the ar9e and ar18 the top draw ....you have to spend over a grand to beat them in my opinion

The AR manual says to set up these speakers "Asymmetrically in your room to insure the smoothest response" I been setting up mine like this for over 40 years and it really does make a difference.

these speakers would sound better about 2 more feet away from the wall and with the side woofers allowed to "spread wide" in both directions and not up against a hard surface like the side of a desk or cabinet. These were some of the best speakers you could get in the late 70s but the design can cause them to be easily miss placed in a room that limits their full potential due to their side woofer design that really are built to be open air on both sides of the speakers.

Dead right there mate Why my AR9s have a 12 inch forward facing bass unit n a 10 inch down facing unit for the bass an 8 inch mid range a twitter n a super twitter they are about the Best sounding speakers I have ever heard

No the side woofer doesn't matter. This idea of speakers being away from walls is you know, a typical comment these days. Some were designed to be near a wall. Anybody read the AR9 manual?

@@kenchiharimoto3484 No, he's not absolutely right. I just read the AR9 manual, pg16, not more than 2 inches from the short rear walls of the room and 3ft between the side woofer and the side wall. So why did I say bang up against a wall for the side woofer was okay? Well these things are bit too complex for your kind of enthusiast, assuming all speakers are better away from walls. Better luck next time guys! (Just keep your opinions to yourselves unless they're qualified by experience).

@@polygamous1 Not dead right at all. Page 15 of the Ar9 manual explains what happens if the side woofer is closer than 3ft to a wall ... there's a loss of low frequency at 175Hz and a slight boost below 100Hz and the manual suggests using a tone control to reduce coloration. Just read the facts, don't assume you're experts because you certainly aren't, let me tell you.

The tweeters used are unbranded tweeters bought in China . They are current connected in parallel with the main AR 9 pair using a 2.2 uF cap in series. Do note that you are listening via your own PC connected speakers though.

But these speakers are Not the original AR9s I have a pair of the original AR9s Not the very first issue with 2 12 inch woofers one side one forward facing as they were very temperamental at how you placed them but the second version with a 12 inch forward woofer and a 1o-inch down facing woofer much easier to place in a room totally linear Frequency response from 28 Herts at minus 3DBLs I had many AR speakers since the 70s when I bought my first pair of AR4s now I only got 2 pairs My AR9s am using all the time and my AR5 my late sister bought for me years ago the AR5s are great sound but Not next to my AR9s another pair that sounded very well was the AR14s for a two way speaker it was amazing

Very disappointed in your choice of music, a strumming guitar would sound good on almost any speaker. I doubt you will ever demo them again but if you do use something you can put those to the test.
