A fantastic visit after unprecedented rainfall I visit the ancient 5,000 year old springs at Alton Priors in Wiltshire . This area has springs that rise up from the ground which is a true wonder and incredible walking and feeling the history in this very special area.

I've still yet to visit these springs James and I think the Winter is the best time when all the foliage has died back

Great video as always, not sure if you have visited wellhead woods in westbury, their is a lovely spring hidden in the woods and if you find the source near the pumping station you will also see the bubbles and sand move majestically. I often fill my water bottle up at the source while on a long walk.

Brought up in Westbury and know the area-Not the same as Alton Priors . As Westbury has 3 main bank springs and one that pushes up in a shallow area after heavy rainfall only -I am sad when I go to Wellhead these days as it is a total mess there ! Thank you for watching

@@jameswalksinhistory3848 I totally agree. There was a chap who spent all his spare days making it nice, neat and tidy but he was told to stop. Now the kids just trash the place and have no respect.

great video, will have to visit, I really would like to visit Blick's Mead as well, but not sure if the springs are on accessible land, as I believe they are on private property, happy new year James :)

Here, in central Florida, we have a number of such springs, fed by an aquifer about the size of England, where our Neolithic people also gathered. Their villages were sited a little way away from the spring because of the wild animals also using the spring and because of the over flow during the rainy season. This area was a vast lagoon back during the Mesozoic that became caves that then collapsed forming sink holes and springs. The Neolithic peoples here had no stone to work with to make things like the great stone circles of Europe, but did have wood for some large structures and many mounds for houses above the flooded areas. Little remains of that culture except for the stone tools, many imported from rocky areas but many also made from local, agatized coral and enormous shell mounds, made from fresh water mollusks as well as bay mollusks, found a day's march from here. There is little evidence for the kind of political-religious centers Europe had at about the same time, we were still hunter-gathers living in a kind of tropical Paradise-Hell, with a much smaller population.

There's a spring in a largish pond near me. Kind of unknown except to locals. But there's a Roman settlement nearby so I'm sure they knew it well. One thing to look for if you come across a pond/ lake and want to know if it's "spring fed". The surface "shivers", it's quite unique. At first you might think it's a breeze or a current, but watch for a while and you realize nothing except water bubbling up from underneath would have the same affect.
