That's great work. Brings back memories. 20 odd years ago I used to carve Santa's grottos the same way. Hiding all the split lines in the folds of the snow. I started out using newspaper as the barrier but quickly moved onto tinfoil (and spray mount). Used to carve with everything from chainsaws, down to sticks with screws sticking out,(for extra harsh rasps.) Would have been alright if the zombie apocalypse had happened. :) Used to go home covered in the stuff. You'd brush it off and the static would cause it to float back to you and every time I pulled my hands out of my pockets a cloud of white bit would come out to!

Having used the same respirators as you guys for quite a while in a big paint department, I highly recommend to upgrade to the 3M Versaflo system. This is so much more comfortable and gives far better protection. I'm not affiliated with 3M by any means by the way. I've worn this system 8 hours a day, for about a year and can't recommend it enough. There are many options in this system, we use the M106 combined with the Jupiter unit. Looking at your activities this might be also the way to go. It might look a bit strange at first sight, but give it a try. I'm pretty sure you'll like it far better then your old respirators. Anyway, keep making the cool stuff you make. Greetings from Belgium.

When I made these giant fiberglass/foam structures for playgrounds and parks, before applying the fiberglass we just sprayed the foam with a nice thick layer of recycled latex paint that we got for super cheap from the paint store, which was a hell of a lot easier and faster than wrapping it in adhesive foil tape.

Why do you say Polystyrene instead of using the correct term Expanded Polystyrene? It’s bad enough when manufacturers do this by listings in relation to their products compatibility with glues etc.

You can learn it all by watching tutorials and trying small projects at home , first. I do this work professionally for the film industry and can tell you that all of the best Oscar winning artists are ALL completely self-taught. This is the way that you get to do projects like this for clients. You have to learn first and practice all of the time and them when you have samples, you can show a prospective client and get paid.

Stunning. This kind of work makes me SOOO happy. I subbed. Glad to have found you. I have a few questions. First of all I love the whole craftsmanship. The attention to detail is really impressive. Hence question 1: Why do the smooth sanding before foil taping? Isn't that a unnecessary step? Or will the foil not stick to un-sanded polystyrene? And the other one is bit of a choice question I suspect is about budget I guess but; Wouldn't it have been nice if the inside was sculpted too? It would have been such an immersive object.
