I love how Rosamund is basically handling this logically and somewhat realistically, and this act of logic wrestling the plot away from Caroline, making for an even more awesome fantasy story.

Logic is not going to be at its strongest in the heat of that moment. Also she doesn't know who to trust at that time that she would trust *enough* to be willing to travel with. Was there a more logical course of action? Sure. Did her choices make sense given the actual emotional situation she found herself in? Yes.

As an author, this happens more often than you would think. I do these long outlines of the story to come, but then when I sit down to write, one of my characters will do something completely unexpected, and all my plans are momentarily derailed, until I can persuade them to go back to their original plot line.

@@repinsvizios Fellow fiction author, here. Can confirm: Sylver speaks the truth. Fictional characters are much like kindergartens in some ways. You often have to coax them into going in the direction you want/need, as all other methods for getting them to do what is required result in meltdowns, tantrums, and the destruction of property. 😅

One of my favourite little moments in this series is the "- Queen Catherine... - My little sister...". You'd think it's just plot exposition fit for the short form, but no no no. It's an absolutely perfect little piece of characterisation. Even if your little sibling has become royalty, they, or anyone in the vicinity, are NOT allowed to forget even for a moment that they are still first and foremost your stupid little baby sibling and that your duty is to put them in their right place when required. (Even though you would also throw cheeseboards and risk your own life to save them. But that's irrelevant.)

It also brings up the question of why the elder sister was the one married to the foreign noble and the younger sister was married to the king of the realm. It may be due to the king's age or preference, but I would expect the elder sister to be given the more important match. I'm assuming the sisters are from a powerful vassal family of King Roland, which I think is implied.

@@Isaac-hm6ih ah, here's the thing, I believe Jill's mentioned that Rosamund and Catherine are NOT from a very powerful family at all, just nobles without much fortune or influence anymore. This in itself might suggest that Roland's marriage might've been a love match rather than very political decision, and thus it alone would answer your question. But I think the timeline explains it a bit, too. We don't know exactly how big of an age difference there is between the sisters, we do know that Rosamund's children are preteen/teen aged, we know she was married probably around 15 years ago. Catherine has a baby daughter, which may or may not mean much, since she might as well have many older children as well. But it is still more likely that the older daughter married for what was at the time very good political reasons, as part of a peace-strengthening scheme (which I've understood to involve multiple couples) to create bonds between countries, especially for the lands at the border. We know Hugo was not a very important noble either, so they would belong to roughly the same social strata, making the match suitable, and their contract politically advantageous. Then, Roland might've met and fallen in love with Catherine and married her, despite her relatively low though noble status - and we don't know if Rosamund being married off to Country A was at this point welcome as another proof of good will between the countries in an increasingly unstable situation, or already very controversial indeed. What we do know is that after Hugo died (we are only know suspecting a murder, so he must've been doing some good work towards peace making, officially or unofficially) and so did the Old King, Rosamund was in the unique position of being politically important as sister-in-law to king Roland, as well as otherwise insignificant enough to be inconspicuous on the stealth mission. TL;dr: It is most likely Rosamund married first, and more in line with her position, making her sister's later match a nice surprise. Also, marrying out of birth order was not as big of a deal in medieval times as it was later on, actually, and even then it wouldn't be unheard of. Especially, as you say, if it was a marriage of choice (otherwise, yes, it would be odd). This may or may not matter in Caroline's Haphazardly Constructed Fantasy World, of course.

There's also the possibility that Roland met Catherine because of Rosamund's marriage. She did the hard labour of marrying for a peace talk, which got her family more status at home, which means that Catherine became eligible when she wouldn't have been before Rosamund's marriage.

[Spoilers] The Backstory so far: Lady Rosamund is the widow of Hugo Hawkhurst who died in mysterious circumstances about a year ago. Rosamund is a citizen of country A, Hugo was a citizen of country B. Countries A and B are at war. Queen Eudosia of country B sent Rosamund with a declaration of truce/peace to King Roland of country A who is Rosamunds brother-in-law. Captain Leo Collins of country B was sent to accompany her and there were a number of amusing/embarrassing/deadly events (season 1) on the way to Quayforth to deliver the declaration of peace. While at Quayforth, someone tried to kill queen Catherine (King Roland's wife/Rosamund's little sister) with Hugo's knife but was foiled by Rosmund's skill with a ranged-cheeseboard and a convenient bed-sword. At the subsequent ball Rosamund discovers that Captain Leo Collins used to work for Baron Mabry (of country B) who King Roland suspects arranged Lady Rosamund's husbands murder in an attempt to keep the war going. Rosamund flees home in fear for her children. In order to get home she has to pass across Mabry estate and access is presently blocked (there is a war on). Rosamund discovers that Leo was spying >on< Baron Mabry rather than spying >for< Baron Mabry. There is a plan for a fake wedding to allow Rosamund to get onto Baron Mabry's estate to continue home but the thought of a marriage causes her to suspect what Mabry is up to. Rosamund fears her control of the Hawkhurst estate will be challenged by Mabry because the Hawkhurst estate is part of country B and technically Rosamund is a citizen on country A. She fears Mabry will attempt to claim the Hawkhurst estate possibly by 'suggesting' a marriage to her. Rosaumd's solution is to marry someone >else< from country B. We are left on a cliff of not knowing if this will be Captain Leo "hot enemy" Collins or Robin the hot childhood friend.

Or someone else we haven't yet met . I presume Rosamund has known more men in her life than Hugo, Leo, and Robin. She may have her own ideas of who would be the best match for herself that Caroline - and the rest of us! - are completely ignorant of. I'm still personally Team Leo, though. 😅

If Robin is a hot childhood friend, that means he's a citizen of country A, like Rosamund. So, it's likely going to be Captain Leo "hot enemy Collins", and I suspect the rest of the story that the author will try to write (despite practical obstacles about the political story thrown in her path by Rosamund) is a "does he actually love Rosamund or does he feel shackled into marriage due to circumstances" trope.

You know, if this ever gets novelized, I'd almost want to see two versions -- one a straightforward telling of the plot (which is terrific), and then another version with all the meta Author vs. Character bits. You could put them together in a "flip book", like the old Ace Doubles...one side would have a suitably dramatic/romantic cover, and the other side's illustration would be more tongue-in-cheek.

GOD this continues to be amazing. We love a well-written metafiction. I have to wonder how Caroline's interactions with Rosamund seem to the other players: Leo, Robin, Roland, Eudosia, etc. It seems like She's been speaking at least to Leo off-screen, but I think it'd be hilarious if other characters who haven't yet had contact with The Author just think these characters who have are completely off their rockers, until Caroline speaks to them and they have a simple, "Ah." moment.

Now I'm imagining all of the other characters adding in their own lines and backstories, much to the befuddlement and chagrin of Caroline and the original outline. It could be like a choose your own adventure book, using different fonts to show the ways that the character's vision for how they want the story retold could support and undermine each other's account on the events in equal measure.

In my headcannon, Rosamund talks to Caroline in her day to day life now and has convinced her to start carrying a knife due to the actions of one of her co-workers at a meeting. It's just a small folding pocket knife and she feels ridiculous having it in her purse, but it is a compromise with Rosamund who wanted her to get the 9" stiletto from the comic store at the mall.

This may be the best use of the shorts format I have seen so far. I also find it a truly accurate representation of how a story gets away from the author. The story is also interesting, I'd read it. In addition, I like the acting, the editing and the pacing. The addition of extra characters (Hand & shoulder) also worked.

I wish I had a narrator who would have called some/many/most of the ladies I got romantically involved with my "Hot Enemy". Perhaps I myself would have clued in MUCH earlier. Like...BEFORE the carnage was...wreaking. (ASIDE: Speaking of babies, I had an almost five month old niece over recently and spent many hours making her smile with goofy uncle things. AND she sat up by herself for the FIRST time in her life here! = ) JIll! The tsunami sized wave of admiration from me here in Canada to you should be knocking you over. Any moment now. Hah HAH! I absolutely LOVE this! As a fellow writer, I find the interplay between the Author and her main protagonist similar to what I believe every writer goes through when crafting a story. Were this a TV show, I would want it to have 3 streams of narrative: 1) the “real” world where Caroline is like an underwriter or an assistant editor for a publishing company with no joy in her position (patriarchy, etc), 2) the fantasy world of Rosamund, and 3) the transitional world where Caroline and Rosamund commune. I see the effect being along the lines of “a disgruntled Caroline replaces her glasses, ties up her hair neatly, and turns around in her chair, her posture erecting as she takes on the role of nigh-omnipotent Author.” Could have lens flares and light shifts/color shifts and such.

I’m addicted to this series I’m loving it. The absolute sarky humour is so up my street. I’ve actually sent it to a few of my friends who are now addicted to it as well. So thank you for such an excellent storytelling and I look forward to whatever you do next, although I have to say I am slightly disappointed. This isn’t a real life book because I would totally buy it.

I love how in this arc Caroline has gone from "Writer" to "Dungeon Master", with the PC taking the plot totally off the rails and in a direction that Caroline not only didn't expect, but basically has no control over anymore.
