DPAD in VR isn't pointless - it's an extra set of 4 buttons that are familiar to consumers. Even if they won't be used much for actual directional movement, they'll be pretty useful for the majority of other games where the DPAD is used for shortcuts like healing, area sense, calling your mount, etc.
@ge2719

Exactly.. I think valve has realised that definite button inputs are a good thing even in vr. One if the main issues with the knuckles is how vague the inputs can be. The grip, there's a reason you cant drop your gun in Alyx. Because if you could drop it then everyone would experience dropping them and accidentally grabbing random stuff by accident, all the time. Same with the trackpad, its tended to be used just as a 4 direction input selector in things, and so why not just have a dpad with actual buttons so you know which direction you're clicking, and can't accidentally set it off from just grazing the trackpad with your thumb.

I think Valve knows VR has a bootstrapping problem - people need expensive headsets to play VR games, and game companies need far more VR users before they'll produce AAA VR games. By making the Deckard an excellent experience for playing standard PC games, Valve can sell the headsets without needing much in the way of VR games, and in doing so, break that vicious cycle.

Valve has to be the most important gaming company of the century, and they'll take the all time crown if they can actually break that basic economic deadlock. It's a great time technologically for gaming but the economy is getting worse and when you look at the broader geopolitics, it doesn't seem like everyone's gonna just have more money anytime soon. Valve being innovative, profitable, user friendly and grounded in the realities of the industry while leveraging their own weight in favor of the customer is just a monumental achievement of excellent business practice.

Thats the future Valve want to bring in with their technology. Unlimited battery life, use the Steam Deck to control Self Flying Cars that interface with the mind, and produce food. Go beyond Artificial Intelligence. Steam Deck will become a true Living Machine. The science to make all this reality is already here. Give it another 5/8 years for the research and technology to mature.

I think a "boosted dock" idea is exciting but I am not sure it's a risk they'll take. This is all kind of new territory (building a handheld pc that sells to pc gamers and console gamers). Adding expensive hardware options won't appeal to everyone. However, now that I think about it.. It's valve. They have done crazier things. This could be a different approach to the "open" aspect that didn't turn out so well the first time (steam machine from 2015). If the Deck 2 is a standardized platform and the accessories are plentiful/powerful, it would not have nearly the negative impact that plagued the Steam Machine. MSI can make an external gpu for it but the games still run just fine without it. I kind of like it. I actually think the xbox handheld might have the XG mobile interface from ROG... (since Phil seems to think we all need another windows handheld pc and loves his rog.) Side note, I have always preferred handhelds but Nintendo has lost me over the years. I, for one, credit Valve more than Nintendo for finally making consoles exciting again. Yes, the Switch started it all. But NO ONE was talking about competing with it until Valve did.
@molsen7549
@molsen7549 24 күн бұрын
It's so tricky, because they're basically breaking into the mobile GPU market at that point, and they can't easily subsidize a product like that with software like they can with the Steam Deck. They'd either have to give it widespread compatibility and sell it for a higher price to justify it, or else lock it to the Steam Deck with a proprietary solution and sell it for cheaper. The problem with the latter is that it'd probably receive backlash from the community and idk if all that hassle is worth it to valve in the first place.

Price parity for Steam games applies only if they are selling steam keys on the other stores. If they sell a version of the game that works without Steam, then they can do it at any price.
@ΣεραφείμΚαραΐσκος
@ΣεραφείμΚαραΐσκος 23 күн бұрын
Also, I believe that, VALVe won't take 30% if a steam key is sold outside of the steam store. So they provide the infractions for downloading updating community stuff and cloud saves without getting money from the developers/publishers if the key is sold outside of steam store, and that's why they mandate for the prices not to be lower than on steam. Source: what I remember hearing from a Thor's short.

That's not true. I challenge you to find any modern game, that's not a steam version, being sold for less on another store. Valve is the PC gaming Mafia, parading around as the innocent saint for PC gamers.
@NickoTyn
@NickoTyn 23 күн бұрын
@@OrPhEeUs What do you mean by "modern game". Anyway, I don't know any example off of my mind, but publishers will not pass on to consumers the savings of not having to pay 30% if they sell their game on another store. Why would they? Especially when they can get away because people think that Valve forces them. As for indie publishers, most feel pressured to offers steam keys anywhere they sell their games because most consumers won't buy a game if it doesn't come with a steam key.

Completely agree about the modular Steam Deck 2 idea. Steam Deck 2 needs to have a decent multi-core CPU and be dockable to an EGPU. This combination could be a "console killer", because you'd have the power of any EGPU you want when docked, and the option to undock it and use it as a regular handheld, and it would also be a simplified entry in to PCVR. Valve would need to make it feel plug and play and optimise for any bottlenecks, which is the challenge, but if they were to figure it out, it might just be another reason to switch to Steam OS over Windows, especially for handhelds.

@@MrOdaddy20111. A desktop doesn't double as a handheld. 2. A desktop PC that you build yourself is generally a large device, whereas a Deck + EGPU Dock (about the size of an external DVD drive) is small and compact and more convenient for living room setups. 3. "But you can build a small PC" Even so, building a desktop PC requires individual research on each component and how to assemble it; it has a learning curve that the average mainstream consumer doesn't want to learn, and heat and airflow management can be a concern with smaller DIY builds. A Deck + EGPU dock involves connecting 2 devices and that's basically it. 4. Price: this is where things get hypothetical, but as FTD said, Valve could potentially partner with AMD and subsidise the cost of a GPU for use in their own EGPU. This EGPU could also be used by other devices, not just Steam Deck, which would drive sales of it further.

So basically what I'm hearing from the last question is, Epic sold Alan Wake for $40 in the shop and $60 on steam, would be good for steam customers. Because the price of an item can be considered part of service when it influences a player to get into the store. After all Epic Games tagging a free DLC on their store and nothing for steam, means steam users get a shitty service than epic game users.

The one thing that make the parity thing harder for me to argue against is that Steam allows you to add non-Steam versions of games to your Steam launcher and get a LOT of Steam's benefits like controller mapping, overlay, etc. The devs might have to find alternatives for some things like cloud saves and matchmaking of course but Steam gives even off-platform games a pretty huge boost (without even mentioning Proton and steam-run for running things on Linux seamlessly).

As someone who used to pirate games left and right, I wouldn't say that it's a service problem, but rather an accessibility problem. This is why regional pricing was introduced in the first place, and it did make a massive difference in me making the switch to buying all my games. I honestly can't remember the last time I pirated something. But then, I've noticed a lot of publishers marking up their prices extremely high in countries that previous benefited from regional pricing, sometimes higher than those games would cost in the US. A few even "readjusted" the price for some of their old games on poorer countries to be considerably pricier. And then they have the nerve to complain that people pirate their games. Alas, that's an extensive and nuanced topic, one that deserves its own discussion.

As I understand it the main (only?) place that valve has the restriction is with steam keys available on other marketplaces, so my guess is: If the plaintiffs win the lawsuit, Valve will no longer allow steam keys to be created on demand, which would be worse for consumers since they'd no longer be able to get steam keys from other storefronts at a cheaper price. It would also hurt those storefronts as well. Honestly, if Valve had actually been saying threatening action if games were sold cheaper on another storefront (without steam keys being involved), I'd imagine they'd have settled by now.

Yeah, I’ve been looking for evidence that they require parity across competing stores. They do have a policy that states that a steam key must be offered for a similar price on Steam if it goes on sale elsewhere, but that doesn’t apply to Epic, GOG, etc. The best I’ve seen is that they require parity across competing stores specifically if Valve has agreed to feature a game prominently in the Steam store. That’s going to be much harder to argue against because it’s essentially Valve asking for payment for prime advertising placement… which seems reasonable. Going to be interesting to see what unfolds.

Honestly I'm sorta on valve's side, I don't think game publishers should be allowed to make deals with other platforms (or make their own) where they sell their games for like 15 bucks while selling them on steam for 80, just to get people to sign up without actually providing a good service. Steam's policy seems to enforce fair competition by ensuring price and feature parity with other providers and platform. If other companies want to compete with steam they should do so by making a competing platform that people would want to use instead of or alongside steam, not by making deals with each other to sell at a discount only on competing platforms that otherwise don't really offer much.

Stop licking their boots. If I want to sell my game on another store for a lower price for whatever reason, I should be able to without Valve throwing their weight around. It's people like you who up hold monopolies.
@IXPStaticI
@IXPStaticI 23 күн бұрын
@@OrPhEeUs I don't want gaming platforms to meet the same fate that streaming platforms have, a dozen different services where all the things you want are scattered between so you need to juggle a dozen different accounts each with their own client for just a handful of games each. To be fair, valve definitely aren't all good guys here. I left that out because I didn't want my initial comment to get even longer but valve is definitely pretty heavy handed towards the sellers on their platform. Their priorities for steam seem mostly focused towards customers and the overall gaming industry in general which is at odds with the interests of the sellers. Game developers and sellers always want to spend less money and make more money, customers always want cheaper games and better access, and both want it to an extend that is unsustainable for the industry at large. And valve has positioned itself right in the middle of these conflicting interests. Personally I appreciate the stability the gaming industry has had for the past 2 decades and in particular how it so far has resisted the growing enshittification we've been seeing all over online services in large part due to steam. The big budged AAA games sector has been a hot mess for the past 3 years or so, ubisoft in particular, mostly as a result of them wanting to make more money while putting in less effort. I really don't want that to spread into the gaming platforms that are at the center of this. Also more of a footnote: Technically a company having a monopoly alone is not a problem, the problem is when that company uses it's dominant power to prevent others from competing and/or screws over partners and customers cuz they have no other choice. aka the problem isn't market dominance, it's them being a dick about it. If a company ends up a monopoly simply because they're fair and square the best at everything to the point where no one wants to use anything else that shouldn't be an issue, but potential competitors would want to call foul regardless simply because they have no way of matching that on a level playing field. Though, I don't think that applies to valve at ALL. Or any game platform for that matter, even a hypothetical perfect one. In an absolutely ideal world, we could buy and install any game we want to standalone without being tied to any platform. And that part is sadly diminishing more and more.

I find steam deck too flat on the front so there is really only one proper position to hold it compared to SC1 which seems to fit nicely no matter it the hand is more forward or in the back. This enables much more precise control using trackpad, which I always had problems using steam deck. Also distance between ABXY buttons and trackpad on steam deck is way too large.

3:30 A modular Steam Deck 2 would be fantastic, just hoping the "Deckard", which is supposedly a standalone VR unit, fully supports PCVR, which with Valves track record, this should be plausible, just can't get my hopes up yet.

Also, Valve has removed the Steam Controller 1's page from the Steam Store. I had it wishlisted (to try and indicate how I wanted them to try again) and it became a blank space on my wishlist (Used to say Steam Controller and now says "(unavailable item)" and has no image) the other day. They're probably revamping the page for Steam Controller 2's launch.

@Aative 2 stage would be like GameCube? And I'm definitely getting at least a pair, I was so upset that I missed out on the first. I really didn't consider that they would discontinue them just like that. This time I'm not waiting.
@Aative
@Aative 21 күн бұрын
@@vermiform Yep. Original Steam Controller had them and its the only way I play Titanfall 2 now. Gyro and touchpad for aim, right trigger is scope (analog range) and fire (digital click) using the Hip Fire option, left trigger uses Hip Fire exclusive to do the same for reloading and changing weapons. Jump and Crouch on the paddles and melee on the touchpad click.
@Aative
@Aative 21 күн бұрын
@@vermiform Also it seems that Valve was getting sued by Scuf over the paddles (which is dumb) and they firesaled the rest of their stock because Scuf wanted a large portion of the profits.

Dream scenario 1) Steamdeck 2 has an advanced form of streaming to Deckard 2) First party, affordable external gpu. Either 100ish€ for the gpu dock or better yet 300-400€ for a complete package (this would standardize the field when it comes to performance across steamdecks) 3) Steamos finally releases and becomes a fully fledged OS that would be on par or better than something like EndeavourOS or Debian (at the end of the day it's based on Arch so it is plausible). An OS you can rely to do actual work on. 4) the Controller is awesome 5) The Deckard is awesome if all these 5 come true we are in for a new generation of gaming, looking forward to it

I hope valve wins the lawsuit in this case. They're not doing anything wrong. The pricing parody insures that valve competes where it should be, as a platform for games. If they lose, it'd be worse for the consumers, having to have multiple launchers and services to get cheaper prices. (Even though Valve has good sales already)

Quick correction. You said "Valve is officially making the Steam Controller 2," and that's not true. What we know is... 1. There was a leak that suggests they're making it, and 2.Based on other information, it's highly likely that this leak is true. However, for a number of reasons, it's possible that they might cancel the project and it might never see the light of day, so I'd just suggest using less decisive language when talking about this or other leaks. It's more accurate to say "It's very likely that we'll get an official announcement soon," or something to that effect. Personally, I hope the leak is true and that the controller makes it to mass production, because it will be an instant buy for me personally. Great video!

Imagine if Steam Deck 2 has a zen6 8 core + udna6 16 core APU that runs at full power docked, and disables half the cores on both the CPU and GPU when handheld 😍 And if there were two docks. One like the current one, and a second with a GPU. The second one could come with a GPU, or Valve could sell it bare bones and offer a few GPUs for us to pick from 😍

I'm going to be very honest where I say the PlayStation making a handheld again will not do very well unless they do these things such as do not lock online multiplayer behind the membership, allow every single country to gain access to their account, put third party stores like Steam and Epic, make sure it's in a reasonable price and don't do the same mistake they did with the PlayStation 5 Pro, make sure the handheld have a similar design to the PS Vita or PSP for example look at the GPD WIN 4 and many other features that could be added to the list.

I think it won't be settled quickly because large companies like EPIC want to pretend to be the victim, while they are really just victims of their own poor customer service. If I were Valve, I would argue that we are not a restrictor of large companies or people aspiring to be large companies, but instead a champion of the consumer, trying to protect customers and prevent them from being manipulated by malicious money men who are constantly selling vaporware or games that don't do half of what they advertise, thereby stealing customer monies. It seems to have been standard in the games industry for quality to go down on released games or such companies to never deliver on promises to consumers, yet there is no recourse to get your money back, unless you buy the game on Steam.

13:27 I'll tell you why Rick: *because the customer is fucking dumb and only cares about the price, not the value, and Valve KNOWS*. Imagine the disaster that would be a lot of people immediately flocking to Epic to buy a game 5 dollars cheaper than on Steam. They don't care that those extra 5 dollars have such an important value as sustaining the entire ecosystem that Valve has around Steam AND Linux which is WAY more important. They only care that they'll get a game 5 dollars cheaper, quality be fucking damned. We have a specific term for this in Brazil: "Gérson's Law". Search it up. This is what's gonna happen if Valve loses the lawsuit. We all lose and the market enshittification continues.

Ya know, the SteamDeck s Internal Board Design is Modular, meaning, the Main MOTHERBOARD is In Fact, a Mother Board... The rest of the boards in there are Modules, the Yokes is on Module, the Pads, Module, buttons, Module, LED or LCD. . . Modular... I could be slightly wrong, BUT Steam could Capitalize on the DIY guys by selling an Updated Motherboard that has More RAM (I say a guy pop 32-64 Gigs of RamChips on his) ... And they Could - Could offera APU and RAM upgraded MoBo Replacement... Just saying, if you already have the Unit, you probably love it ... Got it customized the way you like... What could make it better? ... An Upgraded APU,SoC (aka South/North Bridge Combo) with maybe Dual USB-c (make one optional for the ModSquad) ... Ya know, compatible with LED at least so we can still KickIt a few more years... I know it's not likely because they would have to price it almost as much as the Deck2 (they should call it the SteamDeck Pro) it would be cool to get a Front plate and LED screen upgrade that updates the DeckLCD's screen to be a bit Bigger than it was and fill the Boarder...) maybe someone did that already. Anyway, I support Steam, they've always been there for Gamers since day One, they deserve to get ahead, ya know, it's really sketchy to me how all these Chinese "Emulator" companies can get away with Murder, but they wanna Attack Valve... It's because it's an American Company I think... The rules are Bogus, it's like OK, if you're a Good Dude and you happen to accidentally ONE TIME walk out of a Walmart with a Snickers that you didn't pay for, prepare for getting Tackled in the Parking Lot by Blart Mall Cop... BUT, if you're NOT a good guy (Nintendo) ... somehow you always leave the mall with two 118' Flat Screen TVs, a Gold Watch, and Fly Nikes ... No one bats an eye. Funny how that works... The law only applies to Honorable People it seems. Often Dishonorable people squeeze right through the cracks ... Un noticed (intentionally in noticed I think)

But other countries have extremely high inflation, so even a game that we find cheap for $10, might cost them 100s of dollars comparatively in another country. So the easiest thing to do is to simply use region locked product codes.

While I'm glad the Steam Controller 2 exists, I do have doubts about the usability of those trackpads as primary inputs - the right trackpad in particular seems like it'll be a reach if you want your pointing and middle fingers resting on the bumper and triggers at the same time. Which is a shame because I loved the OG Steam Controller for FPS games where a joystick just doesn't cut it for aiming.

I am 100% here for the Deckard! As an owner of a (now depreciated) Quest 1 and seeing the Valve Index still going strong, I really want to get out of the Meta ecosystem. Since I really can't place a computer where I have the most room for VR (an unfinished basement is no place for a computer), getting another standalone VR headset is ideal, and I'm really hoping the Deckard is one.

I understand touchpad on controller. I was a naysayer until I had my hands on a PS4 controller. But I think there's no need for 2 touchpads separately. I'd have preferred one single one, somewhere in the middle for sizing, but below where the PS4 controller has its own. I think the steam controller Mk 2 will be a better version of the original, which I hate. But time will tell. Right now, the original Steam controller in my company break room is the only controller covered in dust.
