Im considering buying a steamdeck due to how stupid the prices are becoming for PCs. I live in Australia and almost no gaming laptop has capable cooling in the summer. Unless you want to spend $7000 AUD for 1080p. Then to go cheaper a descent 1080p desktop is $3000 (basing of games like space marine 2) but then no portability. Lord Gaben and his holy steam empire looks like the way to go. Just watching Australia reviews for cooling and no one has complained yet. Waiting to see what freemont actually is first cause 2025-2026 is predicted new steam deck hardware.

A valve console will definitely be successful. But guarantee that game prices will go up

Linux gaming is simply dying off. More and more developers are pulling support, and not a single gaming peripheral manufacturer natively supports the OS either. Even Zowie, which is often recommended, only has firmware updates for Windows.

Id rather buy a game on steam then claim it for free on epic. And the 30% cut valve takes on steam i dont think is all that bad. You showed $42 for a $60 game on steam and almost $53 for epic game store. I am 99% positive that they will get waaaay more sales on steam. If a game developer releases on epic games they arent getting sales bc the launcher sucks ass. IF there was a competitor then i can see people complaining abt 30%. There are also developers that only sell games off their own websites with their own launchers. Just saying there are options

My thoughts are if Steam can make OS that can run games 10-15% better than on Windows it could actually revolutionize the market. I use my PC for games/netflix/spotify/etc so for last couple of years nothing special about Windows is keeping me on it. But lets see what the future holds :D

And Valve didn't cure piracy, since piracy is free and even easier than downloading and Signing in to Steam atp.

Important things about Steam are not just the games, the workshop for example, the community and all the little things around it are also important that Epic doesn't have...

Something companies should notice is the fact that most people doesnt like to have/remember a lot of accounts for things that could be in just one. The same happens to streaming, Netflix was great because you can find all there, now you need at least 3 accounts to have 50% of the same content you had

Steam = gaming SteamOS = bye bye microsoft.. for us gamers at least.
@DugdoesDigging3 күн бұрын
valve hasnt done anything to consoles, consoles and their publishers have been killing themselves, ps games are on steam (the good ones, and if theyre not on steam, theyre being put on it within the next couple years) xbox is owned by microsoft which has a vast majority of gaming OS on computers, so xbox games arent exclusive to that, and nintendo is just doing their own thing by themselves, they're fine. The console wars are over, nintendo won by keeping their games exclusive.

The whole Valve monopoly question makes me laugh. So there was a time when gamedev companies were born. Everyone made their own iconic franchises, earned a lot of money but everyone except Valve succumbed to their greed they started selling their stocks and bonds to investors to get more money instead of working on the money they had already earned, like Valve, They have become dependent on investors, marketers and managers who are interested in short-term benefits rather than reputation and future profits. They have received their short-term profits, and now they are sitting without money and belong to investors who manage them as they want and complain that they now do not have enough money to make a competitively capable platform such as Steam, as well as investors and marketers who manage companies are not ready to take risks and try something new to consistently surpass Steam. They drove themselves into a trap, fucked themselves up to the fullest and now they cry like little infantile children who have eaten all their candies and demand that adults take the candies away from the child who saves and eat gradually. What a clowns. In Russia, we have a saying "A miser pays twice", which means that when you spare money and buy something cheap, it quickly fails or you are deceived and you will have to pay again. Same here, they took advantage of the money they had already earned on iconic games, sold out to investors, and now they need much more money to surpass Steam

This is the same game Microsoft wants to play for now on. Making "play everywhere" its main "mode" for developers and licensing the xbox specs for OEMs to produce different types of hardware that work in the same "xbox ecosystem" in which the software runs seamlessly on all of those different hardware - be it console, pc or handheld -, all of them running windows. It looks like the competition will increasingly be Microsoft vs Valve (Windows vs Steam OS) instead of Sony vs Microsoft. That is actually new and exciting.

Starting development using Ryujinx as a basis is not illegal as the licence of the code that existed at the time is open source. Making it proprietary afterwards does NOT automatically chance the licence for past code, ever. If you would like examples, check the varios open source softwares that went proprietary in the last years, such as Redis, Duckstation and most famously Terraform. There is a de facto fork of terraform being currently mantained by a group of companies including many big tech players, using previously open source Terraform code. Project name is OpenTofu, all of you can check on that. I urge all to inform yourselves on how software licenses work before making claims, in order to not accidentally spread misinformation
