Thank you for this video! I am currently trying to figure out if I wanted to do Masters in Social Work or MPH. After watching this video, I feel like an MPH is more of my area. Can I ask how you're doing especially during the COVID-19 pandemic? Trying to make sure that jobs will still be available for me during this time.

Glad the video was able to help! I actually know a couple of people who did the dual degree program for MSW/MPH. As for jobs, this pandemic has made "public health" a well known field in the U.S. right now which should mean an increase in funding and jobs for at least a few years! So I wouldn't worry too much about the pandemic negatively affecting the public health job market for MPH grads (:

Hi.I'm a MBBS student. I want to study MPH abroad. Under MBBS, we have a subject called Community Medicine. Where we have studied minimally about public health. But, I'm an introvert. In MPH, is it necessary to be extrovert? How the study conducted? Is it theory based Or you have to be like talk to people all the time?
@MomentsInMed
@MomentsInMed 4 жыл бұрын
All schools have different program structures but I think that in most grad programs there is some discussion-based learning. That being said, my experience at Columbia has been that professors won't make you talk in class if you don't want to. Also, there are definitely some online programs though where the discussion would all be virtual/typed. Hope that's helpful!

Hi Taylor, subbed cause I’m applying to MPH programs after graduating with a BS in biomedical sciences and then doing a 1 year postbacc to retake some courses that didn’t go so well. Now i have a better GPA. Any advice for students hoping to go into public health with a low GPA? I have above a 3.0 but i don’t have a stellar 3.7+. Thank you for being super informative! Thank you so much for the kind words, Michelle! Please, please, please don’t stress too much about GPA, especially when it comes to MPH programs. I didn’t have an amazing undergrad GPA either and I know people who have gotten into Columbia MPH with less than a 3.0 so it is wayyyy more than possible! Just make sure your application focuses on why you love public health and who you are as a person, that’s what they care about 😊

My work in behavioral health research was a lot of time on the computer or in meetings. You are constantly writing papers, reading papers, developing surveys, analyzing results through statistical software, and brainstorming with your team. Can be super interesting if it’s something you love! But can also feel tedious when it’s not something you’re passionate about. Occasionally you might do more “interpersonal” tasks like running focus groups or qualitative interviews but that’s probably less frequent and is then followed by a lot of transcribing! Haha

Hi thank you for the video! I have a bachelors in health science and I’m deciding between PH or Healthcare administration. Im leaning toward PH because of my history of Pulmonary disease and how diseases can effect your health. I was in a nursing program but realized that it wasn’t for me or dental because overall oral health says a lot about your own health…but really don’t want to deal with mouths… between PH and HA, which would you recommend?

Great question! So you would not want to do both an MPH and MHA because they can be quite similar (and in my opinion that would probably be a waste of time/money). I explain the difference between an MHA and an MPH in Health Policy & Management (HPM) this way: - an MHA is for people who want to do business and see healthcare as a way to do that - an MPH in HPM is for people who want to do healthcare/public health and see business as a way to do that I hope this makes sense and is helpful!

@@khairakaur3509 Hey, I am not entirely sure about the criteria for you as you will be coming as an international student; you might need to talk to your embassy or contact a relevant university for further information. Since you have completed GNM, it might be worth looking into doing a masters or at least try to get some credit points for your previous studies when applying to study in Australia. There are currently many universities that offer a bachelor's or honors program in Public Health as well as many alternative pathways. In terms of your future and career opportunities, it depends on your Visa Criteria and where you might wanna work in the future as it is harder to get a job in a government organization/ agency if you are not an Australian Citizen which can drastically reduce your chance or put pressure to get a job; but always keep in mind that current laws can change literally anytime and there is always an alternative pathway if you really want to pursue it. From my experience, I thoroughly enjoy studying Public Health and Health Promotion and I recommend it to anyone to pursue it if you have the passion:) Good Luck!

@MomentsInMed
@MomentsInMed 3 жыл бұрын
Check out this video about the cost of Columbia’s MPH: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXvSpKN4oqiVadU Due to the time commitment of a master’s degree, it would be very difficult to study for USMLE Step 1 at the same time. US medical schools give students time off to dedicate all of their time to Step 1 studying. An MPH program would not give you the same level of dedicated study time.

I also don't know too much about the job market for Bachelor-level public health grads, but if you're finding that most positions want further education, you may consider looking into an MPH program in order to more easily find a job in your niche. At Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, the Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) is 2 years long. You can apply to do an accelerated 1-year program if you have significant career experience or another high level degree but otherwise, the MPH is 2 years. The 2 year program includes a certificate which is similar to a “minor” in college. My certificate was in Comparative Effectiveness & Outcomes Research but it was a part of my MPH, it was not a desperate degree nor could I have done the certificate without doing the MPH. I hope this helps!

I can't say for sure because I haven't done any research on it myself but an MPH is a masters level degree just like any other so I would assume that you could teach at community college with an MPH. I definitely know someone who was teaching at a college with her MPH (but she was simultaneously pursuing a DrPH). Unfortunately I can only give this anecdotal advice since I am not pursuing a career in teaching but I see no reason why you couldn't get a job teaching with an MPH (:

It’s not exactly necessary, but getting your CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) credentials would probably be helpful. Or at least make you stand out more :). Many CEPH accredited schools push for this especially if you go the Health Promotion route in a MPH degree!
