I worked in the paging industry in the nineties and we worked in screen rooms to tune the receivers. We needed to have the enclosure grounded to work properly. The other thing we had to contend with is the door and its frame ( same as the lid on the garbage can) the doors are equipped with special flexible metallic gaskets that enables an excellent electrical seal blocking out radio waves. I tested the cage with an HF radio transmitting outside the cage into a small antenna with a receiver on the same frequencies within the cage. We tested from 3 KHz up to 440 MHz and then with commercial equipment from 150 to 1 GHz with no intrusion of any of the signals. We were about five miles from a VHF low television station (ch4)and about a mile from a local high rise building with multiple high power paging transmitters and could not receive their signal inside the cage. Don't bother these cages started from 3K$ and the sky the limit depending on size, screened panels, isolation panels for electrical inputs, lighting options.

Further, not all EMPs are created equal. As I understand it, a large high altitude nuclear detonation , would cause a over load. Like a very large lightning strike. It’s 2021, I have a faraday bag that does not allow a cell signal to ring my phone. Bluetooth doesn’t work in either direction even with only a fraction of an inch between two paired devices, one inside and one outside. The same is true of wifi/hotspots. I’m guessing physics has not changed in five years but I’m pretty sure there is something amiss with your cage. Still I appreciate the time and effort to produce this video! Stay safe and healthy!

You can stop the signals to the phone if you place a metallic cloth covered foam gasket around the inside of the lid of the can. The problem is that higher frequencies can get through very small gaps between the sides of the can and the lid. You want to do your best to reduce the signal levels by 50 decibels or more across the range of frequencies. Without proper sealing between the can and lid you’re only getting about 15 decibel reduction in the upper frequencies.

I'm in the process of making two emp cans, and your covering the handle brackets prompted me to check on their connection to the lid. I turned the lid upside down and filled it with water. Yep, it leaked! So the top does indeed need more attention!

Put some steel wool around the top of your cans instead of tape that the lid folds the wool over and forms a shield around the top. Now you can open it without destroying the shield like with tape. Also for more protection that is really needed is get a couple sizes bigger can and put the small can inside it.

While I believe the RF spectrum of frequencies can vary....in a properly placed nuclear explosion you could have EMP approaching or exceeding 50,000 volts in the pulse.. It will pass through metal with as little as 2% attenuation. Finding electronic devices inside and frying them. Cell phone demos are miniscule amount of RF energy. The ECM in cars/trucks will also take this 50KV pulse and many...many will be damaged. The ECM regulates fuel flow, spark, timing and many other functions to keep your vehicle running. If your vehicle is out of the pulse damage maximum then your damage may not be critical. My suggestion save your money building ineffective Faraday cages put it towards a bicycle or a horse. Get a Coleman Lantern because there is a good chance all LED flashlights could be toast also. Put money into food/water/supplies to tide you over for.a year or more. Own a gun you may need it for protection as well as food. I have lived long enough to remember living from well water and using an outhouse. We can get by without cell phones and the push button world we live in. Plan a plan and work your plan.

Yes, and while on a " somewhat " related topic, the entire " 5g " used as a directed energy Weapon System, There will be nothing outside of a very deep Underground facility, as far away from the emitting devices as possible, to save a person from its effect. While i understand it is a " debated " topic, the entire concept of a Directed Energy weapon, more devastating and pervasive than an EMP, is a real possibility. I did a lot of work on the Mill EMP protected PCs, they were well sealed, and nothing, not even 1 seam was left open, 2 layers of stainless steal in most places, special metal gaskets, lots and lots of screws to insure proper mating of parts. If the relatively week cell signal can get into your can, what do you think the massive amount of energy from an EMP/CME will do? Best bet use the metal duct on every rivet, seam, and opening on the can, use nesting 2-3 layers deep. The foil tape is like $22 for 50 yards, Cheap when I look at 3 radios, 3 high dollar flashlights, 3 GPS units, 3 Red Dots and other electronics. Easy to open a razor knife on a string tied to the lid. Do you need this? Only you can decide but, if your going to do it, do it right.

I placed a rubber trashcan with lid into my galvanized steel can, with wadded paper and Great Stuff foam to keep the rubber trashcan floating within the large steel can. I duct (cloth type, non-metallic) taped all openings on the lid of the rubber trashcan, but did NOT duct tape the edges of the rubber lid when placing it down tightly. I then set my phone inside, ready for normal calling etc. Then I put the rubber lid on tight, laid a towel on top as a spacer to help the metal can lid hold the rubber can lid down tightly, and put the metal lid on tightly. Then i used metal foil 2 inch HVAC duct tape (about $10 a longggg roll at HD or Lowe's) to wrap around the lid of the metal can, to completely close it. I also taped securely over the little holes where the can handles and the lid handle are, to close them on up. My first cell phone test was WITHOUT this metal taping.........and it was a wash........I could hear my phone inside ringing when I called it with my wife's phone. FAIL !!! So I find the metal foil tape, put my phone in, close her up and tape her up as described above. PERFECTO! NO ringing at all. Now the proof in the pudding: After slitting the tape, opening up the Faraday Cage, and retrieving my phone.......I take it and check for recent phone calls and texts, and there are none.........but about 2 1/2 minutes later the phone starts beeping with phone call and text updates coming in. Similar to how you have your phone turned off, turn it on, and soon the signals catch up with you........ only my phone was on the entire time, the signals just could not get to it within the Faraday cage. So next I will be testing it with walkie talkies to check other wave frquencies. The somewhat tedious part is having to retape it every time you open it up..........and the limited space, if you want to do more than just phones, cameras, walkie talkies and a old laptop or two. So I'm anxious to find an old heavy duty storage locker like this guy did in his other video, which he has set up to be able to just open the doors and retrieve tools and electronics, then close the door and be good to go......... With that crazy Rocket Man over there, we should ALL be taking greater measures to protect ourselves. Throw your old laptops into your cages, too.........they just might become the backbone of a new world after all our good gear gets fried in an EMP/Solar event.

I've been gathering emergency kits, not just based on emps or nuclear war etc, when things like the pandemic hit, it's good to be prepared. you just never know what could happen. being complacent in life isn't good and so many of us have gotten that way because we don't want to believe or even think about things going seriously bad. ignorance isn't always bliss. I have just started learning how to make one, started out with just a ziplock bag, one I saved from light strips packaging and it's silver. heard it protects electronics to a certain degree when it's being shipped I guess... but I used copper tape and made sure it was completely covered , it's sealed with it all around and a little bit on the inside of lip of the bag. i did use my phone to test it, both withy regular cell service, Bluetooth and wifi. I had my Bluetooth speaker playing music from my cell and right when I zipped up the bag, it quit. made sure my ringer was cranked up and had my friend call me. from her end I heard it ring a couple times then it went straight to voicemail, my phone didn't ring itself. taking it out for the bag I noticed wifi was gone and LTE was used, but shortly after seeing that the wifi did come back. them I got my notifications of a missed call lol. so my device is still reachable kinda... I have to gain a better understanding about cellular service etc but mostly I did this to see what my google nest mini does along with the smart devices I have integrated to do certain things when I leave the house as I do have presence sensing turned on. be good to add a crank radio that has solar, uses a lithium battery or regular batteries to the cage thing I think. just in case. maybe SD cards loaded with your precious podcasts and other videos, music... a kindle lol. idk. it's all ingesting though and it should be the last thing to do when you are doing prep prep like this but good idea to take the time to learn about it while early prepping for when SHTF

An effective Faraday cage is a good thing to have. The problem though is that there are too many misconceptions and flawed information about them. Even this video about misconceptions is a misconception gold mine. Some effective Faraday cage critical keys. 1) Must be electrically sealed. Even very small gaps will leak RF energy. The larger the gap. The longer the wavelength (lower the frequency) that gets leaked. 2) Use the most electrically conductive material practical. Not all metals have the same level of electrical conductivity. 1. Silver (best but cost prohibitive) 2. Copper (very good, expensive but affordable and available) 3. Gold (pretty good but very cost prohibitive) 4. Aluminum (probably the most practical) 5. Steel, iron and tin are further down the list. Line such containers with several layers of aluminum foil. Aluminum foil lined containers make pretty good Faraday cages if they are electrically sealed effectively (several continuous layers; any overlaying of seams must be by a significant amount). If electronic devices inside a Faraday cage receives a signal. Then it is not an effective Faraday cage and will not protect electronic devices from an EMP. A shoe box that is well lined with aluminum foil and electrically sealed well can be a good Faraday cage.

If the emp takes out small electronics, won't it take out electric grid, cell towers, etc? Seems foolish to worry about having a phone if towers are down, grid down (transformers made in China) so no power except solar. Regular generators need fuel....that will eventually run out.

Cell phones will certainly not be able to make calls. But, if the EMP does not destroy yours, you may be able to use anything you saved to it. Offline maps, videos, etc.

I have an metal brief case I was thinking of storing my laptop in when i was not using it in case there was an EMP. I tried to call my phone and it of course failed to block it as yours did. But would it stop an EMP or reduce it enough to not damage? For they do shield against EMP's in the military designs. Perhaps they us multiple layers with polarised capacitors as I mention in my previous post to this? These are rhetorical questions. I don't expect you to know the answers. I know the engine compartment is open on the bottom so the car has no chance of running again just curious about say throwing all your electronic devices in the car... like a microwave oven only bigger?

I just put a 4g phone in a biscuit tin and it never even went to answer phone. Also, when I removed the lid there was no signal at all. You sure that's made of metal? If it is you need more ayers! Because I just used a simple biscuit tin and it worked. I read cordless house phones are more powerful so tried that in the same tin and it rang. You need more layers I just watched another experiment where 3 metal containers like the one you use were put over a router 1 after the other whilst the signal was checked each time. It took all 3 till the signal was lowered considerably. But every time one was placed over it the signal dropped.

was it a flip/dumb phone? It was easy to make a Faraday bag for my brand-new dumb phone (won't ring), but using the same material, a smart phone did ring. The antennae for the dumb phones are far, far weaker.

Install a conducting gasket in your can and stop the rim acting as an antenna. The Dr. whose book you referenced proved that without the conductive gasket and he recommends several different types for ammo cans or garbage cans you lose a significant amount of DB reduction. I have the exact same can you have I used copper tape at the handle to secure that gap and tested it with cell phone and ham radio both with and without the gasket, but the gasket would stop cell phone and ham walkie-talkie communications completely. Your mileage may vary.

If the can is welded at seams then anything more can add nothing. Furthermore, the aluminum tape has an adhesive backing which may actually insulate, rather than add any conductivity.

Im going to make one for my portable generator out of a cardboard box wrapped with layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Some people say you need to put an insulating layer between each layer of foil, others say just use 3 to 5 layers of foil right on top of eachother. Anyone know which is correct??

Consider that the amplitude from an EMP or solar flare is going to be a LOT stronger than radio or cell phone signals. If you're still getting through with those, you might want to quadruple or quintuple your protection.

Excellent video and presentation 🙂 I've been freaking out over a possible CME and/or EMP... I recently received a "Pacemaker". I've been scratching my head on how to protect it. If it fries, I'm history... I've been instructed, by the Doctors, to avoid contact with "Welding Machines" and other EMF sources, such as High voltage Transmission lines, as they can mess up my device. To add some protective clothing and/or an EMP, EMF and/or CME proof shelter, like a Faraday Cage of some sort. I found a Filtering material, on Amazon, that is described as filtering 95% of most frequencies... I'm planning to make a tent of sorts that I can get into, in the event of a serious CME or EMP, etc. On the funny side, if the material Fails, I don't think I'll be in any condition to get my money back... lol Thanks for sharing this information... I'm going to get that book... Not just for something to read but because I NEED it... 🙂

Grounding the can does help dissipate the energy into earth, especially if you have an EMP event. Like ear plugs, you can still hear quiet sounds in a quiet environment, but very loud sounds will be reduced enough to not cause damage, maybe. Grounding the can will do nothing to help with the small signals, but a massive shock wave will be stopped better when providing a path for the energy in the metal can to ground.

Too many seams, but they do offer some shielding. Not much better or worse than a tarp against rain. You'd be drier but not dry. Items placed in better ( but maybe also not perfect) Faraday cages inside a shipping container, or good metal shed or garage, will fare best in a CMA or EMP event.

Stainless steel is a very poor conductor and a proper Faraday cage needs to be made from a highly conductive material. A copper can/mesh will block the cell signal. Your steel can is not able to effectively distribute the electric charge. Essentially, that’s not a Faraday cage, it’s a storage bin.

It blocks ENOUGH radio waves to stop the electronics from being damaged. If you're running some sort of experiment with sensitive equipment, you may need more blocking than I need to stop an EMP from damaging my electronics.

It's not that I am making any extraordinary claims about the radiation, but it would be nice to protect myself from it nonetheless. I'm wondering how much protection I would get if I just hung some aluminum screen on my wall where the meter is. The meter is on the exterior of the house outside of a bedroom. And if I were to hang a square of aluminum screen on the wall inside the bedroom, would that block most of the radiation? I'm thinking of a square of screen maybe about 5 ft by 5 ft or so. The siding of the house is made of stucco, by the way. I don't know if perhaps that helps protect from the radiation, does it? It has also come to my attention that my cell phone gives off more radiation than I thought. I'm looking into what can be done about that.

I believe copper would work better. Silver would be even better I’m sure 😝. Yeah, I think if it’s in the ground, it would be grounded. But, as far as I know grounding isn’t necessary. Also, I bet the dirt would do quite a lot to block radiation. It’s very good at it. I have a faraday cage that is buried. I should do a video about it sometime.

Several of the studies are showing that even if a vehicle quits working after an EMP weapon, for a lot of the newer vehicles, they believe all that would be needed is to disconnect the battery then reconnect it to reset the vehicles sensors and most cars will run. I have been trying to tell people about this for years, but everyone believes that all vehicles will quit working and we will be in the stone-age after an EMP. I use several Faraday cages similar to yours, yet I have mine layered for additional protection at different frequencies. First I use a sealed aluminum foil covered box to store my important electronics in. Then I use a copper mesh material to wrap the aluminum foil box and seal it with copper tape. Then that is heat sealed inside an EMP bag, then the bag is placed in a galvanized can similar to the one you have there and is sealed with aluminum tape. I shouldn't have any problems after an EMP. Personally, I believe that we will be hit with a Super-EMP weapon within the next year which will be blamed on either Iran or North Korea, but I don't think either of them will really have their finger on the trigger. I think that finger will be a lot closer to home than most people want to admit or believe.

that being so, still should go for a box that can totally block your fone. My tin can box can block phone signals as well as radio frequencies up to 107mHz being the highest available FM frequency there is. an EMP has a frequency 15-100mHz while CME 16-40mHz (based on online research). it cannot block my UHF radio as it it operates at a frequency of 400-460mHz. I keep my uhf/vhf transceiver in the tin can, although frequencies over 400 mHz seep in/out, if something detonates much stronger and fries my tech in there I have even bigger problems to deal with, like being dead.

The "bigger problems" are what Preppers prepare for. :) As I said, the author of this book says that you're not trying to block every decibel of every signal, but rather, lessen the strength of the signal so its no longer damaging. That being said, any less signal is better!

As long as the pressure cooker is solid metal all the way around, the lid is metal, and the lid is tightly closed, and the rim is touching metal all the way around, it would probably work. The more conductive the metal the better, but I think most metals would work.

See but I had the same problem And I freaking worked N worked for about 4 hours and I got zero service with zero calls zero wifi etc. you can achieve zero . I just did this this weekend. With enough work and idk I took a green coated wire striped it about inch pushed that into the ground then connected the rest inside the bucket and once I did that, that was when I achieved Total zero service and calls. I'm not sure if grounding it helped or not but I did it and when I did I finally got total zero service. Lots of aluminum tape and a bit of foil that's what I used with my metal can and lid.

I believe solar panels will be ok so long as they don’t have any discrete components in them. If it has any sort of charge controller in it, that may be damaged. I’m no expert, so do some additional research 😁

I tried in short order to find some information on solar flares but could not get anything real. The previous solar flares such as the Carrington event which if would happen now would be catastrophic, is Would now be multiple times worse due to the lessening magnetic shields going down. As we enter the solar minimum, 2017, the shields are down exposing us to much more harsh and direct contact.

Yes a large ‘Carrington event’ could possibly destroy all transformers in the electrical grid make restoration near impossible. If unrecoverable shutdowns happen to satellites, internet, radio communication, digital data, phone systems, electrical systems then we could face homes with no heat, water, refrigeration, communication and a financial system destroyed overnight. The outcome is unimaginable. BTW, this is exactly what I fully expect will happen within a decade.

The effects of EMP can be increased in nuclear weapons, and those ideas are classified. The higher the yield, the lower the EMP, but there are ways to enhance the EMP effect regardless of yield. Studies were conducted in 1962 during Operation Fishbowl in the pacific, but they didn't understand the full effects then. Much of it remains classified.

My Faraday cage doesn’t let phones ring when called. And cars made before ‘84 have a much better chance of running after an emp, the majority of pre 84 vehicles will still need to have things replaced like alternator and cylinoid and possibly battery, but with only 1 in 10,000 vehicles made after 84 even have a slight chance of operating!

Just wondering, I have what is called a mortin building garage....30'× 25' all steal, sheet metal with Cement floor, and insulated. How much deflection could this provide to a car parked inside as well as generators and other SHTF equipment from an EMP.

The floor needs to be metal and grounded to the rest of the building as well the front and the back of the building if it is not metal and the building itself needs to be grounded as well. All seams need to be tight without an crack.

well the inside not sure why you would paint it outside. dont think painting outside would work. I think if you used flex seal rubberized paint you could get a better seal inside thus making the db's higher. like 100db. i have not seen it tested yet. i know it may be expensive way but you could cover more area plus a better seal

Yes, as long as its non-conductive. Many people make faraday cages with tin foil wrapped around a wooden box.

You need to wait for the EMP to end. If the source is nuclear, wait for the bombs to stop. If the EMP is from a CME, wait until night and look for auroras, if there are none, it should be safe.

The anti static bag numbers are probably erroneous. The anti static bag's metal layer is so thin that the metal would likely melt and the plastic bag decay, under the current load and heating induced by a nuclear EMP. All tests we can run to check for shielding are at powers that are 5 to 6 orders of magnitude or more lower than power levels generated by a nuclear EMP.

Purchase a backup computer module for your car model, wrap in in a few layers of foil and keep it under the seat just in case. Also, surges "confuse" memory circuits. Disconnect the negative terminal fro the battery for 15 min, then reconnect. It might start up.
