We've got the full picture now: a businessman who went bankrupt six times got lucky and was picked by NBC for 'The Apprentice,' which made him look like a successful CEO. It’s pretty clear that any business school student should know the tariff war ended up doubling costs for customers.

If they are still selling the same number of units but with double the price tag then it means they were pricing the goods too low originally! My point is that if tarrifs have zero effect so that Chinese made goods are selling the same amounts in the US as they did before but with higher prices to offset the tarrifs then it is quite evident that the price is still within reach of the consumers, or there are zero alternatives (I wonder why).

But you don't know what people were doing to be able to afford the higher priced goods. They might have saved up longer then they would have before. They might have gone without other items. The fact that people are still buying doesn't mean that the higher prices aren't a problem for them.
@AB-jz9nsАй бұрын
@@TKHaines If you study economics you will learn that in a free market the prices are set by the demand. If a company was making 100 widgets in China and selling them in the US at $10 each and after tariffs were imposed they are still selling 100 widgets at $20 each then it means they had originally priced their product below what the market was able to pay. If they had priced it correctly then they would have sold fewer widgets (let’s say 70) at the higher price and that higher price would be higher . This is ECON 101

I feel like nobody is dumbing it down for the masses well enough. If a pair of Nikes currently cost $100, and a 50% tariff is applied, that pair of shoes would cost $150. Nike isn’t going to eat into their profits to keep prices down. It gets passed on to the consumer. Meanwhile, the US made shoe that only charged $75 to remain competitive with the Nike pair, can bump their price up to $100 while still looking like the far more affordable option. You’re now paying more regardless of which shoe you choose because the tariff has caused all prices to rise.

For example, goods that are produced by German companies are made in the country for the American market but also are exported, means these exports are not taken into account as far as trade balance in goods between America and Germany is concerned. 6,000 German companies have created nearly a million jobs across the United States, thereof 1/3 in manufacturing, having invested hundreds of billions (US$ 658 bn in 2023 alone), as well as offer apprenticeship programs in cooperation with local colleges emulating the German dual apprenticeship scheme. In fact, between 2019 - 2023, the United States were the largest recipient of foreign direct investment, mainly from Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands. Together, these three economies accounted for most of the increase in foreign direct investment in the United States over the last three years. During his speech in Georgia, Trump has doubled down by threatening to take away other country's jobs. “Under my plan, American workers will no longer be worried about losing your jobs to foreign nations. Instead, foreign nations will be worried about losing their jobs to America,” he said. "I want German car companies to become American car companies." Trump continued: "We will take over their factories." Think about what this means for other foreign businesses, investing in American jobs, and how they will react to such an announcement?

To suggest that current tariff policy is the same as Trump tariff policy is to suggest there is no difference between a scalpel and a machete. Inability to understand how tariffs work, as demonstrated in your response, is exactly why Trump is not fit to be President. Economists, (you know the actual experts in the field), can and have easily explained how the risks and benefits of tariffs have to be carefully considered, tracked, and adjusted.
