Today we are watching Fargo (1996) for the first time! Fargo (1996) is directed by Joel & Ethan Coen and stars Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi. The film focuses on a man named Jerry (William H. Macy), who hires two crooks (Steve Buscemi & Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom.
Jerry's shady plot draws in others including Jerry's father-in-law, and a friendly, but determined sheriff (Frances McDormand). Things are about to get wild in Fargo, North Dakota!

“FARGO” is a brilliantly made cinema experience. Francis McDormand won a much deserved academy award for her portrayal as Marge. Francis is fantastic, she’s one of my favorite actresses.

The Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan (Joel is married to Frances McDormand, who plays Marge) played several inside jokes. It's not technically based on a true story, which is part of their humor. The only part that is confirmed to be based on a true event isn't necessarily relevant to the plot - the TruCoat scene in the dealership at the beginning of the film. Ethan Coen reportedly had the same thing happen to him, and almost word-for-word, too.

As promised, I watched the movie for myself and came here to watch y'all's video. Great reaction!! I really liked the tone of the movie. It was kinda nonchalant, kinda darkly funny, quite violent. Good stuff. If you haven't seen it, would def recommend "No Country for Old Men", and "True Grit". Two great Coen brothers movies. Keep on keeping on, y'all!

"You betcha!" Fun Fact: William H. Macy stated in an interview that, despite evidence to the contrary, he did hardly any ad-libbing at all. Most of his character's stuttering mannerisms were written in the script exactly the way he does them in the film.

I like how at the end Marge says "And here it is, a beautiful day" before the other cops show up and it reveals an entirely frozen desolate scene with drifting snow and almost no visibility- I used to work in Saskatchewan, and that's how people there think! I also like how Mike Yamagita, being obviously of Japanese descent, speaks in exactly the same Scandinavian-American accent as everyone else from Brainerd.

Lastly, I think Jerry is the most disgusting of all the criminals in the movie, simply because he still thinks he really meant no harm, and will probably see himself as some kind of victim. That "sense of entitlement" is a customer communicating what they like. Apparently you're clueless on how business works. The business serves the customer, not the other way around. It's the same business model as KZbin or broadcast television. They have to please the customer or the customer won't show up. That doesn't mean the reactors have to do everything the customers ask for. But for you to berate a customer for expressing a preference just shows your ignorance.

@@DMichaelAtLarge I 100% agree. That Steve guy gave them terrible advice. I say "terrible" if they want their channel to become a stream of revenue for them. If they don't care, then they can keep the same format. I don't see anything wrong with telling them they talk far too much. Not only that, they talked so much that they missed critical parts of the movie. Their mic audio is so loud that it drowns out audio from the movie. There are literally blueprints online that give pointers on how to grow/stall a reaction channel. By those standards, they're doing everything wrong. Calling us "customers" is apropos. If the customer doesn't like your channel, they'll tune in elsewhere. When they tune in elsewhere, your ad revenue drops. It's just like any other business, if customers don't patronize, you don't grow.

The meeting between Marge and the guy who says his wife died isn't really random. After Marge finds out from her friend that he was lying you see her driving when she gets a certain look on her face then goes back to talk to Jerry Lundegard again. The incident with her old high school acquaintance makes her realize she can't take what people say at face value just because they seem sympathetic. She's used to people being authentic and nice but she cannot do that as a police officer.

I've seen this movie several times, and only just now picked up on Scotty calling Jerry "Jerry", not "Dad". Jerry is the step-father. That's why he never really thought about Scotty's reaction.

Love this movie. I knew that William H Macy and Steve Buscemi would be value for money going into it, but Frances McDormand was a revelation. Career best performances all round!

If you're looking for suggestions, "Shawshank Redemption," and "Pulp Fiction" are always at the top of my list. And if you've seen those already, then I'll recommend one of my favorite movies that also has Frances McDormand, "Almost Famous." Not a film many channels have covered, but it's a great movie and I think you'll enjoy it.

When Jerry goes to his father in law office that’s so funny no place For him to sit down and scraping the ice losing the scraper having to retrieve it because well he had to keep clearing the ice , I love that whole scene, thanks again

BTW, This is not literally a single true individual narrative of a story... Though some of the individual events were actual items that made the news. The Coens were joking when they said 'Based on a true story'. It makes you think harder about the missing money lol. Check it out.

The Fargo TV series is great too.. it's more or less a direct continuation of the events from this film. "Raising Arizona" is one of the Coens first films and it's a masterpiece. Highly reccomend it .

Fun fact, if you go to the tourism center in Fargo North Dakota, you can see the actual wood chipper they used in the movie, complete with the leg sticking out of it. Also a few years back, a woman from Japan was found frozen to death in the city dump in Bismarck North Dakota,, she had a map to the money that Steve Buscemi had buried, someone sold her a fake treasure map and she came all the way from Japan to find the money.

They released a deluxe edition of the dvd (or maybe vhs?) once that included a snow globe with the wood chipper that had red and white snow when you shook it up. I really regret not buying it as soon as I saw it.

"After Hours", "The King Of Comedy" and "Cape Fear" (all three directed by Martin Scorsese). "Wild At Heart" (directed by David Lynch), "Sophie's Choice" (Meryl Streep's most iconic role....and not a single reaction for it! Amazing movie). "Bonnie And Clyde" (another iconic, super influential classic.....not a single reaction for it!) Horror: Creepshow, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978), Carrie (1976), Rosemary's Baby, An American Werewolf In London, Poltergeist (1983). Other super classics: "Planet Of The Apes" (1968), "Chinatown" (1974), "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" (1975)......I tried to keep this list movies that don't have many or any reactions.....but that are hugely famous and well-regarded, none of these are obscure. Since you asked for movie recommendations, I have several that I think are outstanding. First, two that are very well known - Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit" (Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, 2019 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay). Second, a couple of New Zealand movies that are outstanding but not as well known... Lee Tamahori's "Once Were Warriors" (note: violence and incest, a bleak story but fantastic acting) and Roger Donaldson's "The World's Fastest Indian" starring Sir Anthony Hopkins (true story, eccentric individual pursuing his dream against the odds).

It's a meditation on greed, probably the most complete since Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" or Faulkner's "Snopes" novels. Take just the Buscemi character alone. Planning on collecting a million-dollar ransom that evening, he spends time arguing with a parking attendant over 4 dollars. Or getting mad about giving half of the Ciera to his partner, KNOWING that the massive ransom is waiting for him out in the snow by the highway. Dude, just take the damn truck and go collect your million! He gets murdered because he didn't want to give up 10 grand or whatever for the Ciera. As for Jerry and Wade, money is all they ever talk about. There is literally no other subject. Jerry even thinks that faking cars to get a GMAC loan is going to somehow magically work, because he's greedy and dumb. Wade isn't too keen on giving up a whole million to save his daughter. "How about we offer half a million?" The movie's tone is pitched as black comedy - all those funny accents - probably because it would be unendurable as a totally serious film. The movie does not have a very high opinion of humanity. Greedy or dumb, usually both, except for Marge and her duck-painting hubby. It's true that "there's more to life than a little money", but it's a statement that sounds a little defeated, or at least quiet, even coming from the heroine. In this bloody world, such sentiments fall on deaf ears.

Long underwear is very popular up north in the winter. Medium to heavyweight thermal underwear under jeans and a pendleton shirt keeps you nice and toasty at somewhat cold temps. Realize this is based in North Dakota and Minnesota. My friend went on a cross country skiing trip in Minnesota a couple decades ago so I was watching the weather news for the region. They had a cold snap and it went to -60F. That's dangerously cold, so you take your clothing plan very seriously. The right pair of thermal underwear, wool socks, balaclava, shirt layers, heavy coat, really good gloves and an insulated hat. You can do it various ways, but if you don't build it well, you will suffer and possibly die.

I had to go to Fargo this past Dec for work stuff and out of curiosity I drove some of the roads around the outskirts of town - it looked exactly like this movie - I even slid off the road one point into a snow bank and a local was kind enough to pull me out with the wench on his truck.

A little late for this one. Just found the channel when A Fistfull of Dollars showed up, but I thought I start from the beginning. I see that you have gone through the most popular Coen movies; The Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona. But almost all of Coen's movies are great. My suggestion is to start from the beginning with Blood Simple. My favorite of theirs is Miller's Crossing. Maybe because it deviates from their common theme of a bunch of people tries to get a big pile of money, but greed never pays. In Fargo, "Funny Looking Guy" just *has* to argue about half a car when he has all that money hidden away. That's how greed is rewarded in a Coen movie. :D

Bismarck gets cold. i’ve been there in dead of winter and it was -35°F that wasn’t with wind chill; that was just the actual air temperature. To put it into perspective, imagine it’s so cold that the temperature could go UP by over 100° before it’s T-Shirt weather .

I love the Coens they really care about the movies they make. To one is alike. Fargo has an interesting mix of understated humor and quirky characters with a serious plot. If you like Coen movies, I'd recommend "No Country for Old Men" and "The Big Lebowski"

I love reaction channels with at least 2 commentators. It's also a nice thing that one of you is familiar with movies and the other is a beginner. Don't worry about the comments telling you to speak less. I'm here for the reaction not for the movie itself. I would suggest you to mix in movies about the movie industry itself into your diet :) It would make sense that you would react to such movies as movie reactors. There are lots of them and they are somehow being disregarded by the reactors. One such movie would be "Be Kind Rewind" as a starter, then maybe "The Party", "Synecdoche, New York" (which is actually not about the movie industry but the show business in general - theatre in particular), "The Player".

I think the funniest part of this whole movie apart from the incompetence of Jerry and the criminals was Jerry and Carl's (Buscemi) greed. Jerry asked for a ton of money from his father in law, but when the criminals asked for 40k more (or what they thought the "whole" 80k) he didn't want to give it to them. Same with Carl, when his fellow henchman asked to split the money for the car, he refused. Hilarious.

Definitely a Coen bros. classic haha 🎥 As someone who hopes to make films one day myself, I definitely recommend checking out the best film I’ve seen in my 26 years on this planet: “It’s Such a Beautiful Day” by Don Hertzfeldt.
