I wonder if Viki and Lia can tell that a huge part of the atmosphere and humor of this movie is the Minnesota accents of the characters. And not just their accents, but their stoic, innocent attitudes. That's why Margie at first seems like she might not be too bright or hard working. It's an exaggeration of the real Minnesota character -- seemingly very cheery, always thinking the best of people, but in reality quite down to earth and not at all stupid. And it works both ways too. Jerry too comes off as a pretty ordinary cheerful car salesman. But while he isn't a psychopath like the blonde criminal guy, Jerry is just as evil in his own, ordinary way. This is a brilliant movie!

I always wonder if non-native English speakers notice accents. Like the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2 who wasn't even trying to hide her Irish accent. Or Joan Cusack in Working Girl (although, sadly, I have yet to see a reaction to that).

I get the accent, and also, as a Norwegian, the last names, plus where in the US this happens, make it clear what sort of people this is.

They may not have noticed the accents, but they certainly noticed the mood. At the end they were discussing how it was unusual that the movie was mostly calm (i.e. Minnesota vibes) interspersed with the violence, unlike your usual bloody crime film.

These are not Minnesota accents. I would know. I live there. These are Canadian and some North Dakota accents. Rarely ever do i hear people talk like this. And when j do it is very obvious. Even when i traveled around the country for 5 years going through 40 different states. Most people had no clue i was from Minnesota. From northern Minnesota. NOT the watered fown twin cities type of Minnesotan either. Also no one says "oh yeaaaah". Or "dont-cha know". All made up!

The Coen Brothers do a great job of creating characters that are "quirky" but still relatable. Another thing I've noticed in Coen Brothers films is the way they use the landscape. The snow-covered fields in this film, or the desert in Raising Arizona, create a sense of place for the characters and help set the tone of the film. These places can kill you if you're not careful.

This movie takes place in Minnesota. Minnesotans are like American Canadians. They're known to be uncharacteristically nice and naive. That's why the wife didn't run when she saw the masked man looking in her window.

I love how Coens' movies can range from some of the most brutal movies ever to zany madcap comedies. I don't know if there are any other writer/directors that have such a range. They definitely have a very dark sense of humor that is in pretty much all their films. I personally think they are the most talented movie makers alive today.

Good one, Ladies! So, it's not really based on a true story. The Coen Brother lied. It was sort of a joke. Coen Brothers' movies are always very quirky, filled with odd characters, and often quite dark, but they are always very creative. . My favorites are O Brother Where Art Thou (much more light hearted) and Miller's Crossing (a gangster movie), but they have a lot of good films. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂

FARGO (1996) is a fictional, dark comedy about crime and bad decisions, directed by Joel Coen, and written by Joel & Ethan Coen. Much of the movie's charm comes from the Minnesota accents and from Margie’s humble, workaday manner as she investigates the case. The cast includes Frances McDormand (as Marge Gunderson), William H. Macy (Jerry Lundergaard), Steve Buscemi (Carl Showalter), Peter Stormare (Gaear Grimsrud), Kristin Rudrud (Jean Lundergaard), John Carroll Lynch (Norm Gunderson), Steve Reevis (Shep Proudfoot), Steve Park (Mike Yanagita), Harve Presnell (Jean’s father).

10/10 My favourite Coen brothers movie The Coen brothers can always be guaranteed to deliver a quirky, diverting, off-key movie experience, and FARGO remains their most successful movie to date; a story of small-town life, dead cold temperatures, and a bloody crime wave. As with the majority - if not all - of their films, it's a densely-plotted, intelligently-scripted story, with a cold grasp on reality throughout but nevertheless some absurd situations to enjoy. Things begin small and gradually build up to a blood-spattered climax, propelled by tons of originality and irregularity which propels this past most similar genre fare. Frances McDormand deservedly got an Oscar for her excellent performance as the pregnant cop, but William H. Macy is equally good as the nervous car salesman whose life spirals out of control. Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare are also brilliant as the two psychotic criminals who begin by kidnapping and end in … well I'll leave it for you to find out. In parts touching, warm, funny, frightening and shocking, FARGO is an example of the crime thriller at its best.
