FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmmaking siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen both embraced and poked satirical fun at their Minnesotan roots with this comedy-drama-thriller that earned seven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief whose affable, folksy demeanor masks a whip-smart mind. When a pair of motorists are found slain not far from the corpse of a state trooper, Marge begins piecing together a case involving a pair of dopey would-be kidnappers, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Bergman stock player Peter Stormare). They've been hired by Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman under the thumb of his wealthy, overbearing boss and father-in-law, Wade (Harve Presnell). Jerry's raised some money illegally through a petty scam he's run on General Motors and he's about to get caught. When Wade sours a business deal that could save his son-in-law's hide, the desperate Jerry hires Carl and Gaear to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Things go predictably wrong and a series of murders occur, with Marge, waddling along behind her enormous belly and ever-hungering for an all-you-can-eat buffet, hot on the trail of the killers. Although the credits for Fargo state that the film is loosely based on real events, the story is entirely fictional, the claim being just an ironic jibe on the part of the Coens.

Corrects his bad assumption, making him realize he's wasted time and resources. Doesn't say "don't worry about it", but tells him a joke to lessen the sting a little. Good boss.

“I’m not sure I agree 100% with your police work, there,” is the most Minnesotan line of dialogue ever committed to film.

Every screenwriting student needs to analyze this film. The writing here is so subtle, but it tells you everything you need to know about Marge as a character. She's got fine-tuned detective skills, but she's not a show off. She's also not a push-over and willing to tell people when they're wrong. But the joke she tells shows that she's sweet, and doesn't want to hurt her partner's feelings for getting it wrong.

I feel like the existential chemistry between Marge Gunderson and Anton Chigurgh is such an incompatible polarity Anton would end up also cuffed in the backseat as confused as Gaear.

@@CommanderNova1 - I didn't get it either because I thought it was one of them words made out of numbers and you're suppose to figure out what letter the numbers represent. It isn't that. The joke is that the guy just looked at his license plate, and then officially changed his name to match it because he couldn't get a personalized plate.

not many people realise number plates/license plates are different sequences for trucks and cars in some areas; I don't know the state but in BC pick ups and passenger plates are alpha/numerically different so cops can spot when people switch plates

There was a guy named "Juan Caca" and he would always tell his friends, "I'm going to change my, name, I'm going to change my name". So one day he actually goes downtown to do it and he comes back to his neighborhood all happy about it telling all his friends: "I did it! I finally changed my name." "Oh yeah? So what's your name now?" "Jose Caca."

State police zones (the usual name for the assigned area they patrol) are usually vast areas, depending where they are assigned. Marge & Lou are working out of a local small police department, so it’s feasible they wouldn’t know the killed trooper.

State Troopers in Minnesota, and most states, stick to federal and state highways for the most part, which by their nature are very long and travel through several jurisdictions. They don't tend to have a lot of interaction with the local cops. It's not like the level of interaction you see between city and county police.

Perhaps I've seen too many LA- and NYC-based scenes where the cops go over the top when finding another officer killed in the line of duty, but for some reason (the area of the country?) she seems to show no more emotion in this scene than if it was just a dead horse. Even in other scenes, she just doesn't get deservedly excited. Can someone possibly explain this?

Also the dead officer is a MN state trooper and Marge is the local Brainerd PD. It's likely she didn't know the dead trooper personally and had not ever worked directly with him. That kinda makes a difference. State and local police are not quite that closely knit. If it had been Lou (whom she obviously works much more closely with) killed in the line of duty, she might act and feel differently.

Here's the deal. This movie was made in 96 right and Blood Simple in 84? And I get them on KZbin now in 2019. What happens is you watch new movies when you are in your teens to early 20s then something happens. Its like the world isn't meant for you anymore or movies are too stupid to bother with. Then decades later you accidentally for upon this? Ya, funny.

Because they're *dumb* criminals. It's like why would they kidnap Jean in broad daylight by walking up to her house or how Carl gives his location away later by going on to strangers in bars about how he's going crazy up at the lake. Apart from Marge, everyone in this film really aren't smart at all
