FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmmaking siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen both embraced and poked satirical fun at their Minnesotan roots with this comedy-drama-thriller that earned seven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief whose affable, folksy demeanor masks a whip-smart mind. When a pair of motorists are found slain not far from the corpse of a state trooper, Marge begins piecing together a case involving a pair of dopey would-be kidnappers, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Bergman stock player Peter Stormare). They've been hired by Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman under the thumb of his wealthy, overbearing boss and father-in-law, Wade (Harve Presnell). Jerry's raised some money illegally through a petty scam he's run on General Motors and he's about to get caught. When Wade sours a business deal that could save his son-in-law's hide, the desperate Jerry hires Carl and Gaear to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Things go predictably wrong and a series of murders occur, with Marge, waddling along behind her enormous belly and ever-hungering for an all-you-can-eat buffet, hot on the trail of the killers. Although the credits for Fargo state that the film is loosely based on real events, the story is entirely fictional, the claim being just an ironic jibe on the part of the Coens.

Whats brillant about this character is all the little things he does or doesnt do that . Not puting temp tags on a car while commiting kidnapping , causeing a scene for having to pay $ 6 ,after stealing licence plate in a airport parking lot , threating a local bartender after being involved in a triple homicide , and last but not least antagonizing a murdeing socialpath over a paying put on a hot car having million in cash that his partner doesnt know about ...

The Coen brothers make some of the best films you'll ever watch. One thing i always liked about their pictures, is the set designs and wardrobes. They really go all out to make sure all of the shots are period correct. It has to be a ton of work to get all the vehicles on the road, as well as the interiors of the various bars, motels, houses, etc. to look like they would if you saw them during the time the story was intended to take place. If you really take the time to look at all the little details in their movies, you can see that they put a lot of effort into that type of thing. I can't imagine being tasked with making every scene fit perfectly to the time frame of the story. I feel like that attention to detail is one of the things that separate a good film from a masterpiece.

I've come to really appreciate any film that can make me feel as though I'm really there in the period the film is based in. Cars, clothes and locations, to me, have always been a surface layer for a particular time in film. What really sells it, for me, is the little details. How people speak, music of the time either in the background or more pronounced, election signs if it was an election year, sayings, TV, etc. Other examples of films I feel absolutely nail their time periods: Goodfellas, Mississippi Burning, The Ten Commandments and Titanic to name a few.

The Coens made a mistake in No Country for Old Men. That movie is set in 1980, as mentioned by Anton during the gas station scene when he says his quarter has the year 1958 on it and has been traveling around for 22 years. In that same scene, you can look behind Anton's left shoulder and see Jack Link's Beef Jerky on a rack. This is wrong as Jack Link's did not offer beef jerky until the mid-1980's.

You know, after rewatching this scene I realized this whole mess could have been prevented if Carl hadn't tried to bribe the cop. A lot of impressive stuff in this scene. The situation between the two is already tense, but the officer makes things so much worse. The divide between the two characters' personality is put to the test and their relationship completely fails in this moment. What is more, is that the Officer is deliberately given a very impressive and intimidating feel. He is all business, and he overshadows Carl. He literally looks down on Carl instead of being friendly toward him, on his level. He represents the authority of justice and the law, and in a lot of ways, how powerless it really is to protect people in the face of objective evil such as Gaear.

The script of Fargo is good but what makes it a great movie is the casting. Every character fits with the storyline. A lot of movies go with whoever is the actor of the moment and ruin a good script.

This scene is a heart-stopper in a way only someone who has something to hide during an unexpected sudden traffic stop can know. I've had more than one. It's hard to conceal the adrenaline surge from an experienced lawman, and they all know what those signs in someone always means!! I found that if just right then you figure, and somehow convince yourself, that it's all over or the jig is up, at that moment a certain calm will come over you. (believing a worst-case scenario). It takes a surprising bit of skill to do this. This is the same calm that takes over in the heat of battle, or any do-or-die situation at that very terminal moment when you take decisive action, or come to a determinate realization or decision. This is hard to explain. In my long life I have pulled through some real squeakers!! (not murder or kidnaping like this scene though!!). But I "feel their pain" here when I saw this scene for the first time in the movie itself! The average person just does not know!!

Can't an unexpected traffic stop cause an adrenaline surge? Many times an unexpected traffic stop results in a demand for money and threats of severe consequences if that money is not paid.

@@user-zp7jp1vk2i Even in the "safe" states, a ticket is still a demand for money. People who don't pay tickets often end up in jail. This happens regardless of whether the driver actually did what the police officer accused him or her of.

Once my friend called me who is a long haul trucker and said he forgot to stock up on weed before his trip. He was parked on the side of a road and was begging for me to get him a pound. I guess I was the go-to for things like this, so I said OK and met my dealer, then headed to the truck which was only 15 min away...and I get pulled over. I was also smoking a joint just a minute ago, so my car reeked as well. Cop says a screw came off my back license plate and it was hanging. Sniffs around and says all he smells is weed. I show him all my info, and also the roach in my ashtray, apologizing and claiming that's all I have. Cop went to his car for 20 min...but eventually bought it and let me go. Bloody hell
