FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmmaking siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen both embraced and poked satirical fun at their Minnesotan roots with this comedy-drama-thriller that earned seven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief whose affable, folksy demeanor masks a whip-smart mind. When a pair of motorists are found slain not far from the corpse of a state trooper, Marge begins piecing together a case involving a pair of dopey would-be kidnappers, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Bergman stock player Peter Stormare). They've been hired by Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman under the thumb of his wealthy, overbearing boss and father-in-law, Wade (Harve Presnell). Jerry's raised some money illegally through a petty scam he's run on General Motors and he's about to get caught. When Wade sours a business deal that could save his son-in-law's hide, the desperate Jerry hires Carl and Gaear to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Things go predictably wrong and a series of murders occur, with Marge, waddling along behind her enormous belly and ever-hungering for an all-you-can-eat buffet, hot on the trail of the killers. Although the credits for Fargo state that the film is loosely based on real events, the story is entirely fictional, the claim being just an ironic jibe on the part of the Coens.

Yeah, the writing of this movie is truly on another level and the roles were portrayed masterfully… like when Steve Buschemi’s complaining about how his blonde criminal partner isn’t talking at all on the road trip…and he started threatening that he was going to ignore *HIM* “well see how you like it!!” And he still just *can’t* keep his mouth shut…

There was a couple in front of me, and the woman looks to her husband as the credits rolled and said, "That's the LAST time I listen to Siskel & Ebert!" Some people just don't know a good movie when they see it. (Siskel and Ebert apparently saw the movie at the same screening, but didn't sit together. This is one of those scenes the Coen Brothers do better than almost anyone where we have someone who you can't even tell if they're a professional actor or not but they're SO authentic and they give a brilliant performance in one scene. No Country for Old Men does that a lot, too.

This happens similar with AirBnb sometimes, and it reminds me of William H Macy in this scene. “Oh please do us a favor, cancel your booking so we can make a deal… we’ve got an even better deal.” “Now look here, I just made a booking based on the listing, why are you wanting to waste my time and energy with all these machinations? You sit there and you act like my wife and I didn’t just pay for what was stated in the listing, like we didn’t have an agreement.”

I just noticed something in this scene; at the very beginning, on the Employee of the Month wall, nearly every picture is a closeup, with the men clearly showing their faces, making them look honest and approachable. The only exception is Jerry's, which shows him backed away from the camera with his arms crossed in front of him, using very closed-off and defensive body language. Even before we see him in person, the filmmakers are already planting the idea that Jerry is a cowardly worm. Brilliant movie! :D
@pok3ypup
@pok3ypup 6 жыл бұрын
Isaac Halberstadt don't know if I agree with them closed off and defensive body language part of the picture. Considering he's leaning on the table with his elbows and leaving forward likes he's wanting to hear what you have to say. Yes his arms are crossed but not in a defensive manner. HOWEVER, it is interesting that is picture is definitely different from the rest. As to meaning, I am not sure.

This scene early in the film reveals Jerry's fatal flaw. The customer calls him out as a liar, to his face, like a prophet, a foreshadowing of Jerry getting tied up in lies and ultimately paying for it. Another theme of this film is that being polite and and being good are not the same thing.

The scene also establishes that Jerry is likely embezelling money from the dealership by selling customers options and pocketing the difference. Notice how when Jerry assures the customer he will talk with his boss, he proceeds to walk into another person's office and just asks if the guy had extra tickets to the gopher's game, which is just a feeble attempt to get some freebies he can pass on to the angry customer.

I was with my wife, and we walked, after months of working out the deal. I can't stand the idea of doing any business with dishonest people, makes me feel sick. They kept calling and emailing us for three months straight trying to get a do-over, but I just kept telling them they weren't professional, so no deal. We went with someone else, same deal, might have been a tad worse for us even, and wasted at least 40 hours of my time.

I'll never forget my experience at a Nissan dealer in 1994. I wanted a new Altima GXE, it would be my first new car. I was going to trade in my 1987 Nissan Stanza GXE. I was going to lease, so I wanted to use my Stanza for the first payment and the various costs. I ended up getting next to nothing for the car and paying over $300 per month on the lease. The next week, my friend went to a private leasing company and got a better Altima (the SE) with leather for $240 per month. That was it for me.

What I LOVE about the Coen Bros is that they'll have several unimportant characters like these two in their films just so they can give two working actors a job. They understand how important reels are to casting directors so they'll let these unknown actors be able to be seen and have their moment to shine as a reference for future jobs. And even within the scene they give as much respect and attention to these two actors as they do to William h. Macy. They'll never appear again for the rest of the film for this momentum day are the most important.

I used to think Jerry lost this scene, but honestly, he made them pay $400. We see how he successfully manipulates people while feeling like a loser. It's how he sends everyone to their deaths with his scheme. The two kidnappers know immediately this is a bad job, there are details Jerry just isn't giving them, "Why aren't you just asking your wife for the money?" but unfortunately, Steve Buscemi's character ignores his instincts and goes ahead with the plan, probably feeling some faint feeling of pity for Jerry.

There are so, so many points in this movie where you realize a single, inconspicuous action doomed them all. If Jean hadn't bit Graer, he wouldn't have stayed in the bathroom looking for medicine and she would have made it out of there. If Carl had changed the plates they wouldn't have been pulled over. If Wade had just handed over the money Carl would have gotten back before Graer killed Jean. There's COUNTLESS moments like this, and every last one of them is something endemic to the character who does it. It's not that things went perfectly wrong in a cosmic tragedy, it's that these people, who they are, meant they were doomed from the start.

It should also be noted that even IF every single part of Jerry's plan went off perfectly, he's still getting hit with fraud by GMAC. He can't just go "oops, sorry I lied about the cars existing, here's your $320k back!" He'd be charged with fraud, and Wade could actually lose his dealership (potentially). But of course, we realize how incompetent Jerry is. Didn't even get alternate contacts for his handlers. Didn't once assume Wade might not play along. Didn't assume GMAC would investigate when it is revealed Jerry lied about the cars. Seemingly had no backup plans at all for when things went wrong.
