Fargo | Season 2 Review | The Best Season?

The 2nd season of Fargo is a massive step up from the first in terms of scale, ambition and I assume budget. The style, whilst retaining that Fargo quirkiness and tango with the absurd, is given a shake up with this funky retro style, full of bombastic soundtracks from the past, split screens and what not. It feels like it was directed by Quentin Tarantino at times.
With the first season having the difficult task of winning over sceptics, like me, who were not too pleased at the idea of one of the best Coen brothers films being made into a TV show, season 2 had perhaps an even greater task - follow up a perfect season of television with a new story, a new cast and a new time period.
Set in the 70s, season 2 stars Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst, and a whole other bunch of actors in a stacked line up of characters.

Yeah that’s what I meant, surely it’s GerBHARDT not how he says it? It’s German in origin and in that part of the US the main source of immigration was from Germany. Hence Budweiser etc . Anyway I agree that they all played their parts well . The Shotgun Brothers and their outfits was a casting/wardrobe masterpiece.

Season 2 of Fargo, to me, stands as one of the greatest pieces of television put to film. Like whenever anyone asks what one of my favourite TV series is, I'll always put this in the number 1 spot. I'll hem and haw a lot thinking a lot more about the spots under it, but Season 2 of Fargo sits comfortably at the top.

Absolutely flawless season. It has the sharpest and most suttle writing, the actors were all in too. Every one of them played their roles perfectly. Dunst was absolutely robbed to lady gaga for best female lead.

@@Flowerz__ It was way too much of a stretch for hanzee to get a face lift and become somebody else entirely. They should of totalyy left that out of the script, awful idea for a solid character. Way too off. I would say the UFO was a bit ridiculous too.

@@iceblue7118 you obviously don't understand exactly what the ufo incidents were and the reason they were included in the show. The world of ‘Fargo’ needs those elements; those random, odd, truth is stranger than fiction elements. Research those little easter eggs. Oh and in the mid to late 70s there was an inundation of state troopers and the public reporting UFOs in Minnesota and South Dakota.

In my opinion, an okay season. Definitely doesn’t top the 1st. I had too many concerns and complaints about this season. It was extremely slow and just of bunch of dialogue throughout episode 2 to 7, Ed and Peggy’s story wasn’t that interesting in my opinion, they killed off such a great character in the first episode, honestly too many villains, and Aliens??? I mean overall I thought the first episode was the best in the season with episodes 9 and 10. The second season didn’t feel like Fargo at all. I absolutely loved season 1 because it felt irrelevant to the movie. Lester was extremely irrelevant to the one guy in the movie. It was also perfect because it focused on one villain who could power over everyone. Like Anton Chigurh. They focused on like 3 different villains in this season. I just thought too much was going on. I personally just think season 2’s kind of overhyped.

I know it a rare opinion but season 3 is my favorite it develops its themes so deeply and it is so character focused. I love the way the tone of the entire season shifts after the end of episode 5 when Nikki is beat half to death

Brilliant shows. HBOs spawn show is so underrated. Breaking bad is epitome of flawless tv. Every episode just moves the story and there’s no wasted plot lines or any holes, small or large.

Season 3 edges it out just barely for me. The theme of corporate evil represented through Varga and Ewan McGregor playing two roles are so great. Plus, the twist involving Hanzee at the end of season 2 is so bad.

The spaceship thing could have been a reference to the Travis Walton incident in 1975 or the movie of it 'Fire in the Sky' in 1978. (Although it was in Arizona)

Prior to more recent years, UFO sightings were peaking in the 1970s, along with abduction stories. It was likely just a friendly, quirky nod to part of the culture at the time.

The Gerbhardt family I presume came over to North America from Germany along with millions of others in the wave of huddled masses. The narrator does pronounce the surname incorrectly from how I am accustomed to. The only slight clue to their origins is what appeared to be a family crest that was displayed on the wall that included the Prussian Eagle seen in many other such crests including those from the Holy Roman Empire. It’s these little Easter eggs that make Fargo so layered and re-watchable, another one being the use of a very similar if not identical money satchel that is used in the original Fargo film and buried in the snow that is used in the other Coen classic No Country for Old Men. This is so blatant it must be done as a nod to the film or the other way round, yes Fargo film was made before No Country for Old Men so it’s a nod to Fargo- also season 2 is set in 1979, and ….No Country for Old Men is set in…..1979.

Season 2 of Fargo is the best season of television you could watch. Its got crime(obviously) comedy, great writing, story, characters, aliens. I love how its a prequel to season 1. I love how its set in 1979. I love how the characters who served in Vietnam talk about the war. I love how theres character’s that are directly connected to a specific character from season 1. Its better than season 1. Dare I say…its better than the movie. I don’t even bother with seasons 3,4 and 5. I tried watching one episode of season 3 and I held no interest at all. I hear it gets rolling after a while but honestly its just not good. I disliked it so much that I lost interest in watching anything further

It was Bill, the character played by Bob Odenkirk who told that story to Molly ( about him losing the kid, him having to steal and then finding each other again or something down those lines ). It wasn’t propaganda per se but it did indeed feel kind of weird and disconnected from the rest of the plot.
