Lou Solverson (Keith Carradine) mentions the 1979 Sioux Falls case to Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton). This will be the story of the second season, coming on September 2015.

One of my favorite scenes from Fargo Season 1. The way Lou interacts with Malvo is just so different from how the other characters acted around him. He wasn't afraid of Malvo, as if he had already met Death and recognizes his face. When Lou mentions Sioux Falls it's as if he had already gone through Hell and back, and that there is nothing in this world scares him anymore -- not even Malvo.

+bamb0ostick Very well said man, my thought exactly. This scene hits even harder after watching the first three episodes of S2. I think the expression on Malvo's face after Lou's story conveys that even Malvo is aware of this. Lou is the only one in the entirety of S1 that's shakes Malvo just a bit. Also when Malvo asks "..bodies?", his hesitation shows he has a feeling Lou is someone he won't be able to shake. Idk my two cents, but again, well said!

+bamb0ostick I think that's what we've seen in Season 2. Lou wasn't really afraid of much to begin with (squaring off with Dodd Gerhardt), but the fact that Lorne fucking Malvo doesn't shake him in the slightest really says something about how Sioux Falls or Vietnam or both affected him.

One of my favorite things about this scene is that Lou completely destroys Malvo’s philosophy. Malvo goes on and on about how everything he does, violence and manipulation is because of primal/animalistic tendencies. But here Lou calls him out hard by saying that animals only kill for food. Here he tears down Malvo’s excuses and reveals that he knows exactly what his motives are and that he is not fooling him. He is not an animal, he is the devil. And as proven in folktale and lore over and over again, the devil can be fooled.

Actually it did win an Emmy for casting. But unfortunately Billy Bob was incorrectly nominated as a lead actor at the Emmys just so “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series” would have 7 nominees (5 of whom were from The Normal Heart) and “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series” would have 6. In short, he was arbitrarily nominated in the needier but incorrect category.

Fargo didn't have a 70's black exploitation, trigger happy or angry black man like so many shows do. They gave him the coolest fucking hairstyle on tv, and a personality that is the complete opposite of Malvo. Milligan isn't the personification of chaos, but the embodiment of a necessary evil....hell from what i have seen he doesn't enjoy killing like Malvo, he does it because he is good at it. And once Bruce Campbell comes along as Ronald Regan, Fargo will have yet another unique memorable character.

The irony is that Malvo killed Hanzee who caused the whole massacre in Soux Falls that Lou is referring to. So in a sense, Malvo brought justice to the murderer, which Lou failed to do thirty years earlier. Of course, it’s then Grimly, Lou’s son-in-law (whom Malvo was just referring to in the picture on the wall), is the one who ends up bringing justice to Malvo. This show is so fucken poetic and genius it’s making me so envious of the creator, Noah Hallwey. It’s just seem so unfair that a screenwriter could be that genius. 😖😖

Cristian Abregú Remember the Fargo syndicate in season 1 that sam hess was working for, and Malvo (the actual incarnation of the devil) massacred right in front of the FBI agents? Well, their fat boss who was eating at the asian restaurant was good old Hanzee. In fact, the whole point of season 2 was to tell the story of how the fargo syndicate in season 1 was formed. And the story in short is that it was formed after a war between the Gerhardts and the Kansas city mafia, which ended by hanzee single handedly destroying both sides and building his own empire in Fargo, an empire which eventually collapsed and fell into the sea because of something completely random and unrelated that put the syndicate in the devil’s path.

The name "Malvo" in Latin can be broken down into two things: "Mal" as in bad or evil. And "Vo" from the word vus -- which means nourished/known/learned. Put them together, and you get an "Evil Nourished." Lorne being the word "to plant" or "to sow." Thus, Lorne Malvo as a sentence means "Sowing Evil and Feeding It." :)

The aliens might have been a phenomenon but they were only there to observe, while Bear was simply one of the many victims of the two-way massacre. The real monstrosity we've been waiting to see ever since the season began was Hanzee all along... and we don't know why. That's what makes the case so remarkable and bizarre. Why he chose to betray the Gerhardts in the first place was a mystery in itself, but if all he wanted was a new life, he could've left there and then. Instead, he very intentionally led both the police and the Gerhardts to wipe each other out, and even went so far as to personally execute the survivors (until Lou chased him from the scene).

@@lancearoni1090 okay, to put everything into perspective, I'll start by mentioning that it's shown at the end of Fargo season 2, episode 10 (the episode's name is "Palindrome") that Hanzee changed his name and social security number. He also mentioned that he was going to get plastic surgery and start his own crime family, which he eventually succeeded in doing. As we see in season 1, which starts off about 26 years or so after season 2, Hanzee was now Moses Tripoli and the founder of the Fargo Crime Syndicate. After a failed hit Tripoli (Hanzee's new idenity) ordered on Lorne Malvo, Malvo retaliated by going to the Fargo mobs HQ's and literally taking out every member of the crime syndicate (25 people in total -- lieutenants, soliders, associates and it also sounded like a female receptionist/secretary was killed as well), including Tripoli (formally Hanzee Dent). His death is in the Fargo episode "Who Shaves the Barber?" - which was season 1, episode 7. In the end, the only remaining Fargo family member left alive and on the loose is the hitman Mr. Wrench. It would make more sense chronologically if you played Fargo season 2 first and then Fargo season 1. And I know it's a lot to analyze and take in, but if like the series as much as I and others do, it's very easy to appreciate the out of place chronological order of events. Anyways, I hope that helped. Have a nice weekend, brother!

+farfangled He also keeps recordings of people he has manipulated or corrupted and listens to them from time to time to get pleasure from it. Its as if he's enjoying the torment of his victim's souls. The finale shows that his human form isn't invincible and he can be taken down. Again this is the literal interpretation of it. The flip side is that he could just a plain old psychopath.

I think people fail to understand what this scene actually suggests. Malvo represents the primal, predatory aspect of man that is unconstrained by law. This is shown by his active endeavours to encourage murder with no intentions other than morbid pleasure. By reffering to Eden, he doesn't suggest that he is the devil but rather that he, or rather what he represents, has been prevalent amongst humans since their inception - perhaps even before expulsion from Eden. Malvo biblically suggests that anarchy is inevitable. In a sense, he is Adam. The season suggests that violence is a fundamental component of man that is not merely the result of some external force.

Such an amazing scene. Lorne walks in thinking he could just roll over Lou get what he wants, and Lou (who has probably seen literally everything and has stared down danger and chaos more times than most can imagine) just holds firm and barely views Lorne as a weird one not worth further mentioning

There's always some supernatural touch to the show. Season 1 it was biblical, this season its more sci-fi. And Hawley keeps it ambiguous, they can either be taken literally or metaphorically.

+Emiscary1 Whilst all three of your points are probably correct, I don't think they're the main reasons, let alone the only reasons. The show's creators have stated that the UFO theme and the buildup to the final confrontation are the successor to the fish from season 1, where they were referenced in almost every episode before having a major impact on some character's lives. Both themes are a reminder that random chance and fundamentally uncontrollable events play a part in the story, no matter what the characters do.
@mihaa94sky
@mihaa94sky 7 жыл бұрын
It is open to viewers interpretation, like many stuff from Fargo. Hawley said his, it is up to you to determine yours. Quote: "The UFOs are God. The entire second season was based on the story of Job, who resists Satan's temptations (see opening scene with Rye and the judge.) People react to the UFOs the same way people view miracles: as a holy sign. That's why Peggy is so nonchalant. Patrick Wilson is saved by divine intervention. Literally, a Deus ex Machina. And Hanzee is Satan, as evidenced by the finale discussion with a man identified only as "The Book," or, presumably God. He renames Hanzee, wonders if he'll join another empire. "Maybe start one of my own," Hanzee replies, a nod to the Biblical uprising the Devil led. And Mike Milligan's promotion with the Kansas mob is his introduction to hell. 🙂Amazing show."

If only Malvo knew that the guy he murdered was the architect of the Sioux Falls Massacre, Moses Tripoli a.k.a Hanzee Dent. It's ironic because Malvo took out an entire legacy by killing Dent, who in 1979 killed Floyd and Dodd Gerhardt, Wayne Kitchen and Joe Bulo who likewise killed Josto Fadda and Nurse Mayflower in 1951. Lorne Malvo was a badass.

I guess you guys have already had wars over the interpretation of Lou's statements here, but here's my $0.00000000002: The writers had no idea what he was referring to when they wrote the lines, they just wanted to give background for his character. The season 2 story was written later (check interviews with the writers, they confirm this). The UFOs could easily be hallucinations, or - consider the nature of the series - rumours reported in the press at the time (1979) which the series treats as real (the 70's wasn't exactly an unknown time for UFO rumours either). Lou is talking about Hanzee, because - and this is the genius of Hanzee's character - he can't make sense of Hanzee's behaviour. Hanzee proves himself the most competent person in the entire series, by far, and yet he is a cipher, very quiet - I even find it funny when he asks the gas station guy "do you get a lot of tourists?" with real interest. This giant, unexplained, unsolved crime that gets to the FBI's most wanted in the story, and is never actually solved (even if people think it is, Hanzee gets away with it) - the total lack of explanation - that's what Lou is referring to, if you add these lines to season 2. The aliens are just more ways of symbolizing the unknown at the heart of this case.

I dreamt of a magical future, filled with wondrous devices, where everything you could ever want would be available in one amazing place... and there was happiness there. Then I saw farther still... years... decades into the future. I saw a handsome older man, his back still straight, visited by his children and grandchildren, people of accomplishment, of contentment. *But then I saw chaos, the fracture of peace and enlightenment, and I worried that the future I had seen, magical and filled with light...* *might never come to pass.* ”

Just finished the second season and while it had some great moments, I think the hype that Lou talked about the Sioux Falls masacre wasn't really delivered the way I thought it would be. A tragedy still, lots of cops and mob members killed but still not what I imagined it would be. Maybe it was my head cannon, but I was expecting the 10th episode to deliver the climax but it was meh. Still, a great season nonetheless

I just finished watching season one. When Malvo made the 'Garden of Eden' joke i literally thought his the devil for a second. Even the timing of him leaving that retournant just the moment the cop arrived felt just too perfect to be a coincidence. The way they sent him out tho was ridiculous. They made him make a mistake that contradicts his character, that he himself would never do in those circumstances just for him to get injured so some irrelevant character deal the final blow. Great character.

I wonder what kind of stage directions they were given for this scene, you can really see their intentions in even just their body language, Thornton looks like someone getting a thrill out of toying and pestering someone else, Carradine is just not giving anything up, he's standing resolute, he does not give a flying fuck, and both characters, Malvo and Lou, seem perfectly fine with it, you can read all of that, in just their body language, that's some top quality acting right there, and shout out to the director if that was their idea
