I agree that the clips are a pain. I’m 70 and grew up ranching. What we always did was take the 14 ga galvanized stay wire and get on the opposite of the post from the wire. Doesn’t matter if it’s a steel post, pipe or wood post. Now, take the stay wire and go around the fence wire TWICE. On a T posts this takes about 5 or 6 inches so that you have enough to come back behind the post and twist. With a little practice, you will see about how much wire to use. You don’t have to cut it before wrapping the fence wire. I prefer to just have a coil and wrap twice, pull back to the backside of the post, then cut the wire on the coil long enough to twist the 2 ends together on the opposite side of the post from the wire. When I twist, I use flat nose electricians pliers and pull back towards me as i twist. The result will be a nice tight tie and holds the fence wire tight against the post. To me, it’s a much better and more secure way than shown in the video and faster to do.

can you clarify "opposite of the post from the wire"?
@jimskinner9234

@@tracitenneson8850 When facing the post, the barbed wire is on the other side. So when you twist the stay wire you also pull towards you and it helps pull the barbed wire against the post.

I’m all caught up. We have been busting our butts the last few weeks. My sons Jeep had problems so I’ve been working on that, over seeding pastures with rye and running like crazy from all these storms. Hope you guys are well!

Doing good. Sounds like ya'll have been hustling. Where are you getting your rye seed from? I'm looking for some cheap cover crop to sow behind the pigs. Oats, rye, winter wheat. Something cheap that will put some carbon down and get things popping up to cover the soil.

We have a great relationship with a local feed store in near by Pine Mountain Ga. we use to buy 50lb bag from tractor supply. We only bought a few a year doing deer food plots. Big pastures changed all that when we bought this place. We are paying a little over half the TS price. It works great for us. Cows and horses graze it in the winter and we pull them off and cut it for hay in the spring.

Nice. Someone said to search for “bin run” when looking for seeds. Not sure what that is but I did find some wheat on Craigslist that was pretty cheap. $8 for 50lb I think. Not sure what that is exactly or how it would germinate.

Hello from Northern Alberta! Thank you for this video. However, I'd really like to mount 2x4 boards on t-posts, so that the board is not touching and the ground and won't rot. It could maybe be 6 inches above the ground. There are t-post brackets for that but they are expensive, as in $4 US each. So, if I need 100 of them, that adds up to significant money. I work at a lumber mill and can get all the reject lumber I like for free. I am thinking of cutting a groove in a 2x4 lengthwise with my table saw, from one end right to the other. Then I could mount his vertically on on the t-post with the "vertical part of the letter T" in the groove. However, I'd need to make sure the vertical 2x4 doesn't slip done. Yes, I could driver small 1/4" holes near the top and the bottom and secure it with wire, but that wouldn't be very tight. It would still slip up and down somewhat. With vertical 2x4's I could screw horizontal railings from post to post, paint it white and have a very esthetic white fence. Is there such a thing as a cost effective collar I could put on the t-post, just below the vertical 2x4 so it cannot move? No, I do not want to install 3" or bigger fence posts. I have a gas powered post pounder and it literally takes only a minute or two to put an 8 foot t-post into the ground 3 feet deep. Anyone with any creative ideas, please advise!

There's a t-post clip tool that makes attaching clips to t-posts fast and easy. It's an inexpensive tool that is nothing more than a piece of metal about 4": long with holes in it that allows you to wrap the clip ends tight to the wire. It's much easier and faster than what is demonstrated in this video. This video demonstrates why you should not use the 14g wire method.

Thanks you, I am not attaching fencing to a t post. I am looking at options for a rail across a bridge that is over a creek. I bought 4 t posts and began looking at rope, cable rails that led me here. It seems this wire will work for what I have in mind, I shall see.

I’ve also heard of people using 12 gauge soft galvanized wire to fasten fence wires. Any thoughts as to why one would be better than the other (14 gauge vs. 12 gauge)?

Why you go over the top? If you on the bottom the wire will hold the fence up better?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
It’s really not about holding the fence up or down but holding it tight to the post. You could certainly go under the bottom. Or you could thread one side over the bottom and the other over the top.
