Installing irrigation for a desert farm. To date we have put over 1.5 miles of pvc pipe in the ground and we're still not done yet!

Hey G M. It's funny, you see all of the material before you start and then basically nothing when it's buried. However, it's the only way the trees and plants will grow!

Hey Chet! Yes, that's very true. One of the things that is helping us on this part of the property are the rain gutters on the outbuilding and house. The outlet for the downspouts for the outbuilding are a few feet from that patch of concrete those worms were on!

Great job, worms really are amazing for soil life and fertility. Thank God we now have an abundance of worms after buying a few thousand from Arizona Worm Farm and making sure to feed them and we spread them throughout our property.

Hey Daniel. Yes, they really are one of the best fertility creators we have. We transported these from the old property in the tree starts we brought over and now they're starting to really take over in the berry beds and surrounding area. Now to get them going in the garden beds as well!

One thing that has broken my heart since we moved onto our land in Arizona is that there are no earthworms. Not one. My husband has dug trenches, we've planted trees, and I've explored in the hopes of finding SOME clay somewhere, but not one worm has crossed our path. That's so sad to me. We've dumped on about 50 truckloads of mulch and it refuses to decay. There are no worms or microbes to help the decomp process. I pray we can restore this land to its former glory. But right now, I need to understand irrigation. We can't use a ton of water to make this happen. We've got to be smart about this.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you're seeing the same struggle we all face. You didn't mention where you're located here in AZ, but keep in mind people have been farming in much of the state for centuries as there has always been a natural water cycle here. The problem has been the large scale exportation of our water resources (selling crops out of state) that has seriously disrupted that cycle. Re-establishing that cycle is what we're trying to do on a small scale, but more of us doing the same can bring that cycle back.

So much work, so satisfying when it's done! How do you know the correct thickness of pipe to use and where to use it (1 1/4" vs. 1" vs. 3/4" etc.)? Is it just trial and error or is there a rule of thumb for such things? How do the extreme desert temps affect the PVC pipes? (You can tell I don't know much about plumbing.)
@andrewf4546
@andrewf4546 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The thickness depends on your irrigation water supply pressure and type of material used and the size has to do with the expected flow rate to make sure you have enough supply pressure at the irrigators. You experience pressure losses due to friction so you have to size the pipe appropriately for the total system flow rate. There are probably some calculators on the web to help. Source: I'm a chemical engineer.

That is a great question and it looks like Andrew F has a great response on this. One of the reasons we rely on George (Sprinkler Dude LLC) is his expertise in this area. His dad also helped on this project and he worked for the city water department and is well versed in this. As for the weather and the pipes, the key there is keeping them out of the sun and the UV rays. If they're buried there isn't much of an effect at all, but if they're exposed to the sun they only last a few years before they start to break down.

Trenches dont look to deep. Easy to work with but probably need to mark them so if we were to get a lot of rain and the ground softens up, your tractor wont crush a pipe. Just thinkin
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim. That's a good point and we do have markers for the first few months and try to avoid the trenched areas. Once we get a good soaking the ground hardens up with that caliche that we end up mixing into the topsoil, but we still try to avoid those lines.

Looks neat. But why not polyethylene instead of PVC? No risk of cracking when rolling above the lines with the tractor.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
I haven't had any experience with Polyethylene, so this is what we went with. It's worked well for us in the past and have not had any issues with it cracking...at least not in schedule 40.

What is your opinion on green houses and high tunnels in your area? The more I see your videos I'm starting to like your center block raised beds. I'm going to try to make a couple of those this week.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 ай бұрын
They are actually used extensively for folks who grow annual crops. We're more focused on perennials, so it wouldn't be of much use to us. Now, creating tunnels for the garden beds, that's a different story and we may eventually do that to extend our seasons just a bit.

What trees on the back property? Pecan? Almond?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Now that was a good guess. The almonds will be in the West orchard and we will have pecans and mulberries across the back. We're planning the pecans around the SW corner of the property where we plan on installing a livestock tank. They need massive amounts of water to grow to the size tree they can become, so we'll see if we can get them to go. It may take a few tries as we understand they can be hard to start.

Yeah, the hat and long sleeves are a must have when we're out in the sun all day. We're usually without hats until around 9 or 10am and then it's hats on the rest of the day until around 3pm. We don't have any branded apparel (except for a few farm logo tshirts we wear from time to time), but we've had a few folks ask us to offer that.

@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 жыл бұрын
We do passive rainwater catchment from the house and outbuilding where we have it directed into swales (grapevines) and fruit trees. We don't currently have plans to capture rainwater as we're focused on getting the farm business up and running first. We will do additional catchment (earthworks, etc), but we won't be attempting to capture rainwater for later use. At least, that's not on the plans currently as the investment (time and money) is not in our budget as of right now.

It's the algorithm. KZbin picks ads and even suggested videos based on your personal algorithm based on your Google search history, email links, watching history, etc. So watching the same KZbin video on my computer or my husband's computer will have different ads. E.g. I watched one political video, and then later got lots of political ads. Or my son messed with the algorithm by watching lots of history of warfare videos, and i started getting ads targeting teen boys instead of middle aged moms.

Also, for a while my algorithm decided I was a swing voter , and I got way political more ads.
