Plowed many acres with our 400 w/4bottom fast hitch plow. It had no trouble with it. The 1st time i drove it doing tillage work, i had it at about 3/4 throttle. When i came around next time,my dad jumped on with me, pulled the throttle down & said " this is an International it's made to work hard. Pin her ears back!"

Those little Farmalls are great tractors. They have been used for everything under the sun. I've seen them with plows, discs, mowers of all kinds, buckets and blades. Our school district had one for mowing the high school grounds and the football field. Several generations of kids seen that thing in action. It was still going strong when I graduated. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was still running.

I pulled a Deere 4-14 trailing plow with our '54 SM-TA that our Deere R diesel could barely pull. SM-TA did it in 2nd. Was the last 16 acres of old corn ground we couldn't get over with the R. Following spring we had a 450 gas with fast hitch, and a 4F-43 plow almost identical to FF's, except our's had a clamp-on land wheel on the right side of the plow towards the back. We had a home-made front weight bracket made from the cylinder mounting bracket from a CASWELL loader, big 3/4" thick steel about 5 inchs wide, stuck out ahead of the grill about a foot, had two 145# wheel weights and had an angle iron saddle between grill and wheel weights for two 50# scale weights, plus the bracket weighed over 100#. It really kept the front down, before the front weights, shift from low side of 5th to high side of TA and the front tires would come up over a foot off the ground. The 450 pulled the 4F-43 4-14's in old corn or bean ground in 3rd gear with ease, old hay ground or hog pasture in 2nd. We had an 80 with a lot of hills, some fairly steep and long and those gave the TA some exercise. Had one clay I actually had to pull the TA back going downhill. Neighbor farmed it with Us, plowed with a Allis D-19 gas and 4-16's Allis semi-mounted plow, He was shifting back and forth between Hi and Lo side but that break in power with the Allis Power Director made for some great WHEELIE'S. Yes, the furrow side rear wheel on a FARMALL with Fast Hitch should be slid out 5-6 inches so the 4F-43 plows with the full width of the front bottom. Dad was kinda lazy and ran M&W direct axle duals all spring except on the furrow wheel of his big tractor when plowing, so we always only cut about an 8 inch slice with the front bottom. The MIDWEST plow harrow became the "MUST HAVE" accessory for all farmers but they didn't work well with fully mounted plows, a neighbor talked Dad into trying a CASE 4-14 trailing plow which had a Midwest harrow, made disking plowed ground as smooth as running down a concrete highway.

The Super MTA is rated about the same as a John Deere R, plus you have the added kudos of the torque amplifier. A W-9 or WD-9 is more tractor than the John Deere R. They have no problem pulling a 4 bottom plow in our heavy clay soil...

My father & I years ago all we used was a 4 bottom behind our 400 after the main beam on 3 bottom broke. Plowed like that for many years. Only problem we had 400 was trike and light in front when dropped plow making it hard to steer and if you tried to break steer it would spin sometimes. Remedied by adding front weight. Worked great for years!

Do you ever consider alignment as far as the tractor being exactly in line with the plow? I used to work for a Massey Ferguson dealer and we had a slide chart that would give the distance from center of the tractor , the "level ' of the plow , in furrow or out. I noticed as soon as you dropped them in , it swung to the left, a small adjustment will make use of the horsepower in a much better level of efficiency, I used it when I was a freshman in high school and every single set of plows I set up was met with doubt ,.....after the adjustments , the customer was very surprised at the difference. Maybe something else to consider??

According to tractordata, the 400 and the 460 had the same horsepower. The 400 was a 264 4 cylinder and the 460 a 221 6 cylinder. My family had a 300 as the main plow tractor with pull type 3-16 - had no problems at 8 in cut on Iowa black dirt. But did bog down when you got into some clay.. our 1946 H only pulled a 2-14. Often had both in the same field - 300 doing 1-2 mph faster than the H.
@tyfrank34277 ай бұрын
They are roughly the same horsepower, but the 400 has more torque and more weight. I made a video showing the 560 is the replacement of the 450. The 560s are constructed similarly to the 400/450 series... But the 460 is lighter, they are more of a replacement for the 350. But the 300 is considerably more tractor than an H. They're not an M but not far from it. Same with the 400s. They are not a W-9 but not far from it.
